To troubleshoot slow or unstable coax internet, first compare Wi-Fi with an Ethernet connection, then check the modem, coax connections and signal diagnostics. If a wired connection also slows down or drops, document when it happens and ask your internet provider to check the line and service configuration. A slow Wi-Fi test by itself does not show that the coax service is at fault.

Start by identifying the pattern

Before changing equipment or wiring, note what the problem looks like. Is the connection slow, disconnecting, or both? Does it affect every device or just one? Does it happen throughout the day or mainly at particular times? These details help distinguish a device or Wi-Fi issue from a fault affecting the modem, coax line, or provider network.

If you run a speed test, compare the result with your subscribed plan, but treat it as one clue rather than a definitive diagnosis. The test device, test server, and conditions elsewhere on the internet can affect the result. Cisco’s cable-modem troubleshooting guide distinguishes testing the cable network from measuring performance across the broader internet.

Use a wired test to separate Wi-Fi from the internet connection

  1. Run a test over Wi-Fi on the device experiencing the problem.
  2. Connect a computer to the router with Ethernet and repeat the test, using the same service and, where practical, the same test server.
  3. If your modem and provider setup allow it, test with the computer connected directly to the modem. This can help isolate the router, but follow the provider’s instructions for connecting devices and restoring your usual setup.

If Ethernet performance is satisfactory but Wi-Fi is slow, focus on the router, wireless environment, or affected device. Check router placement, possible interference, and relevant router settings; do not change the coax wiring based on a Wi-Fi result alone. TP-Link’s slow-internet troubleshooting guidance and ARRIS’s connectivity troubleshooting steps describe wired testing as a way to narrow down where a problem lies.

Hitron CODA56 Cable Internet Modem ONLY - DOCSIS 3.1 | 2.5 Gbps | NO WiFi - Requires Router | Xfinity/Spectrum/Cox Compatible | NOT for Fiber/DSL
  • ⚠️ CABLE INTERNET ONLY - NOT COMPATIBLE WITH: Fiber (Verizon FiOS, AT&T), DSL, Satellite, or Fixed Wireless. ONLY works with cable providers like Xfinity, Spectrum, Cox. Verify your internet type BEFORE purchase.
  • 🚫 NO WiFi INCLUDED - ROUTER REQUIRED: This is a modem ONLY. You MUST buy a separate WiFi router to get wireless internet. Without a router, only ONE device can connect via Ethernet cable. This does NOT replace your current WiFi router.
  • 🔌 CABLE INTERNET REQUIRED: Works EXCLUSIVELY with cable internet service (DOCSIS) from providers like Xfinity, Spectrum, or Cox. Will NOT work with fiber (Verizon FiOS, AT&T), DSL, satellite, or fixed wireless internet. Contact your ISP to confirm compatibility BEFORE purchasing.
  • 🚀 MULTI-GIG PERFORMANCE: Supports internet plans up to 2.5 Gbps with 2.5 Gbps Ethernet port. Designed for plans 1 Gbps and faster from certified providers: Xfinity (up to 2.33 Gbps), Spectrum (1 Gbps), Cox (2 Gbps). Verify your plan speed and provider compatibility.
  • 💡 SETUP REQUIREMENTS: You need: (1) Cable internet service, (2) Separate WiFi router with 2.5 Gbps port for full speeds, (3) ISP activation. This modem cannot create WiFi networks or connect multiple devices without additional equipment.

If wired and wireless connections are both slow or dropping, investigate the modem and service connection next. A wired problem does not, by itself, prove the coax cable is defective: provisioning, signal quality, congestion, and provider-side network problems can also affect service.

Check modem status and physical connections

  • Look at the modem’s status lights and, if available, its administration page for connection or error information. The page and light meanings vary by model; use the modem’s documentation.
  • Make sure the coax connector is secure at both the modem and the wall outlet. Check Ethernet connections between the modem, router, and test computer as well.
  • Ensure the modem has ventilation and is not obstructed.
  • Avoid a factory reset unless it is needed and you understand the consequences for your setup. A reset is not a first-line way to diagnose a coax signal problem.

NETGEAR’s cable-modem troubleshooting guidance and the ARRIS steps above cover basic connection checks. If a coax lead is visibly damaged or the provider identifies it as the cause, replacing that in-home lead may be appropriate; buying a new cable is not a general fix for slow internet.

  • Modem only: This cable modem requires a separate Wi-Fi router or mesh system for home Wi-Fi network.

Review splitters and the in-home coax path carefully

An unnecessary splitter in the in-home coax path can affect signal quality. If you find one, remove it only if it is on your own in-home run, is genuinely unnecessary, and disconnecting it will not interrupt other services. Do not alter shared wiring or provider equipment. If the connection remains unstable, ask the provider to inspect the line rather than repeatedly moving equipment or changing wiring.

Interpret modem signal readings with model-specific limits

Depending on the modem, its status page may show downstream power, downstream signal-to-noise ratio (SNR), and upstream power. Readings outside the limits for that particular modem or provider—or readings close to a device’s boundaries—can accompany slow speeds or disconnects. There is no single threshold that should be applied to every modem and cable system.
