Choose a hub for the smart-home platform you plan to use, then confirm whether your accessories connect over Wi-Fi, Thread, or both. A Matter controller lets an app manage Matter devices; a Thread border router connects Thread devices to the home’s IP network. Some products do both, but support depends on the exact model and firmware.

Do you need a hub for Matter?

Usually, you need a compatible controller for the smart-home app you want to use. Matter is an interoperability standard: it helps supported devices work with participating platforms, but it does not replace each platform’s controller. For Google Home specifically, Google says a Matter-enabled hub must be set up on the home wireless network before adding Matter devices. Google’s Matter preparation guide lists compatible Google devices.

Check the support requirements for your chosen platform rather than assuming Matter devices connect directly to every app. A speaker, display, router, or streaming device you already own may provide the needed controller function; its product category alone does not establish that it supports Matter or every radio the devices require.

What is the difference between a Matter controller and a Thread border router?

A Matter controller is the platform’s control point: it helps an app commission and manage Matter devices. A Thread border router provides network connectivity between Thread devices and other IP-based networks, such as Wi-Fi or Ethernet. Apple’s developer guidance defines the role as: “A Thread Border Router connects a Thread network to other IP-based networks, such as Wi-Fi or Ethernet.” Apple’s Matter accessory interoperability guidance is technical documentation, not a consumer list of current Apple hub models.

These functions are distinct, even when one product combines them. A hub that supports Matter over Wi-Fi does not necessarily route Thread devices. Google’s device list separates Wi-Fi-only Matter hubs from products supporting Matter over Wi-Fi and Thread. SmartThings likewise says its 2015 Hub supports Matter over Wi-Fi/LAN but does not include a Thread router; Thread devices require a third-party Thread border router with that hub. SmartThings’ Matter integration page also notes that some older SmartThings and Aeotec hubs gained Matter support through firmware updates.

How to choose a hub for your home

  1. Choose the main platform. Start with the app and ecosystem your household intends to use, such as Google Home, Alexa, Apple Home, or SmartThings. Confirm which hubs that platform currently supports.
  2. Check devices you already own. Look up each speaker, display, router, or streamer by exact model in the manufacturer’s current compatibility list. Do not infer Thread support from a product family name or from the fact that a device can act as a hub.
  3. Identify each accessory’s connection. Wi-Fi Matter devices use the home Wi-Fi network. Thread Matter devices need a Thread border router. If you plan to use Thread accessories, verify that your controller has Thread routing built in or that you have another compatible border router.
  4. Confirm device categories and functions. Check that the platform supports the accessory type and the features you care about. Category support does not guarantee that every product feature appears in every app.
  5. Review setup requirements. Follow the current platform and device instructions for firmware, app versions, network settings, and phone-based commissioning. For example, Google’s setup guidance specifies IPv6 on the home Wi-Fi network and Bluetooth Low Energy 4.2 or later for commissioning from a mobile device.
  6. Plan for multiple apps if needed. Matter multi-admin can let a device be controlled from more than one compatible app, but each platform needs its own compatible Matter hub. Complete the sharing or multi-admin setup in the relevant apps.

How to compare hub candidates

What to compare What to verify
Ecosystem fit Whether the exact model is a supported Matter controller for the app and household accounts you plan to use.
Matter radio support Whether it supports Matter over Wi-Fi, Thread, or both; do not treat these as interchangeable.
Thread routing Whether a Thread border router is built in or another compatible device is required.
Category and feature coverage Whether your platform supports the accessory category and the specific functions you need.
Setup and network Current app and firmware requirements, IPv6 or other network prerequisites, and any manufacturer-app steps.
Form factor and existing utility Whether a speaker, display, router, or streaming device already in the home can provide the required functions.

Examples: why exact model support matters

Google Home and Nest

Google’s help page lists some products as Wi-Fi-only Matter hubs and others as supporting Matter over both Wi-Fi and Thread. For example, its Wi-Fi-only group includes Nest Audio, Nest Mini, the first-generation Nest Hub, and Nest Wifi Pro; its Wi-Fi-and-Thread group includes Nest Hub (2nd gen), Nest Hub Max, Nest Wifi Pro, and Google TV Streamer (4K). The page also includes Google Home Speaker (2026). Because listings can change and the same product family may have different capabilities, confirm the current entry for the exact model. See Google’s current Matter hub list.

Amazon Echo and eero

Amazon’s Thread support documentation, last updated May 1, 2026, lists built-in Thread border routers including Echo (4th gen), Echo Hub, selected Echo Show and Echo Studio models, Echo Dot Max (2025 release), and selected eero models. It identifies Thread versions 1.1 or 1.3 for the listed categories and models. This establishes Thread border-router capability, not identical Matter-controller functions for every listed product. Check Amazon’s Thread support details.

SmartThings and older hubs

SmartThings says the 2015 Hub can control Matter devices over Wi-Fi/LAN but has no Thread router. It also says some older SmartThings and Aeotec hubs gained Matter support through firmware updates despite lacking Matter branding on the original device or package. Verify the exact model and current firmware in SmartThings’ compatibility guidance.

Will this hub work with my Matter devices?

Check the hub and accessory as a pair, not just the word “Matter” on a box. Confirm the controller is supported by your app, the device’s transport (Wi-Fi or Thread) is covered by your home network, and the platform exposes the device category and functions you need. For multi-platform control, verify that each app supports the accessory and has its own compatible controller.

Manufacturer setup details can affect what you can configure. TP-Link says its Matter devices work with Alexa, Google Home, Apple Home, and SmartThings, but recommends initial setup in Tapo or Kasa to ensure access to full features; it also documents direct third-party Matter setup. Its compatibility information was collected in March 2026, so consult the current model-specific guide rather than treating that dated list as a permanent guarantee. That category list does not promise identical feature support across products or platforms. See Amazon’s supported Matter categories and clusters.

Do you need to buy a separate Thread border router?

Only if your planned Thread devices need one and none of your existing compatible devices provides that function. First check whether your current platform hub or another device on its supported list routes Thread. If not, add a compatible border router; buying a second Matter controller is not automatically necessary when the existing controller meets the platform requirement.
