On your Apple Watch, open Settings > Battery > Battery Health, then scroll to Maximum Capacity. That percentage compares the battery’s capacity with its capacity when new; it is not the percentage of charge remaining right now.
Find Maximum Capacity on Apple Watch
- Open Settings on your Apple Watch.
- Tap Battery.
- Tap Battery Health.
- Scroll down to Maximum Capacity.
Apple documents these steps in its Apple Watch User Guide. Labels and screens can vary by software version and language.
Battery charge and battery health are different
The Battery screen shows the charge remaining, a graph of recent charge history, and when the watch was last charged. Battery Health shows Maximum Capacity: the battery’s capacity compared with when it was new.

To check the current charge without opening Settings, press the side button to open Control Center. You can also add a battery complication to a watch face. These show current charge, not Maximum Capacity.

What Maximum Capacity means
Maximum Capacity is a comparison with the battery’s capacity when new. Rechargeable lithium-ion batteries gradually lose the amount of charge they can hold as they chemically age. A watch may show slightly less than 100% even when new, depending on how long it was between manufacture and activation.
The reading is not a precise forecast of how many hours your watch will run. Actual battery life also depends on your use and the features you have enabled. Think of current charge as “how full is it now?” and Maximum Capacity as “how much capacity does it have compared with when new?”

Why the reading may change after a software update
Apple says certain models recalibrate battery capacity reporting after specified watchOS updates. Recalibration can make the estimate more accurate; a changed reading by itself does not show that the battery physically recovered or suddenly degraded.

If battery life seems worse after an update
Some update tasks continue in the background and can affect battery life temporarily. If the drain began just after a watchOS update, Apple advises waiting a few days and checking again. This addresses temporary post-update activity; it is separate from the Maximum Capacity estimate.

Apple Watch can alert you when battery capacity is significantly reduced and direct you to service options. If Battery Health displays Battery Needs Service, or you believe the battery needs replacement, contact Apple Support about Apple Watch battery service.

Apple’s guidance cited here does not set one universal Maximum Capacity percentage at which every owner should replace a battery. Follow the service message and ask Apple Support about options for your device and location.
