Neither Amazon Prime Day nor Black Friday is reliably cheaper across the board. Consumer Reports says Prime Day prices often match or come close to Black Friday and Cyber Monday deals, while TVs tend to see their strongest discounts around the holidays. For any other specific product, compare its price history and the same model at other retailers before you buy or wait.

What the 2026 sale calendar means for shoppers

In the United States, Amazon’s 2026 summer Prime Day ran June 23–26. Amazon said it featured millions of member-exclusive deals across more than 35 categories. The company also says eligible product pages can show up to 365 days of pricing insights through its Price History feature. Those are Amazon’s descriptions of its event and tool, not independent measurements of savings. Amazon’s 2026 Prime Day announcement

Amazon scheduled its fall Prime Big Deal Days for October 6–7, 2026, a 48-hour event with Prime-member-exclusive deals across more than 35 categories. Amazon again described Price History as showing up to 365 days of pricing information on eligible products. Amazon’s Prime Big Deal Days announcement

Consumer Reports characterizes the October event as an early holiday-shopping opportunity: offers may rival summer Prime Day prices and may appear again during Black Friday and Cyber Monday. Its advice is to track what you intend to buy and compare sale offers with typical prices and other retailers, rather than treating the event date as proof that a deal is unusually good. When Prime Day or Black Friday may be the better time

For TVs, waiting for the holiday period can make sense

Consumer Reports identifies TVs as a notable exception to the general pattern: the biggest discounts tend to arrive around the holidays. That makes Black Friday and the wider holiday-shopping period worth watching if you can wait. It is category-level guidance, not a promise that a particular TV will be cheaper on Black Friday, or that every TV will be discounted then.

For many other products, compare the price rather than the event

For products outside that TV guidance, Consumer Reports says Prime Day prices on average tend to match or come close to Black Friday and Cyber Monday deals. The available evidence does not establish that one event is consistently cheaper across every category or product. A sale in summer may be a good time to buy if the actual price is low for that item; waiting for November is not automatically better.

For limited-time offers, waiting has a trade-off

Some event deals are time-limited or have limited inventory, so an offer can end or sell out before a later sale. Weigh that availability risk against the chance of a better price later, using the item’s history and your own deadline rather than the advertised discount alone.

How to tell whether a deal is genuinely good

  1. Choose the exact item first. Record the model number or SKU and the price you would actually pay. Similar-looking products can differ in model, size, configuration, or included accessories, making headline prices a poor comparison.
  2. Check its price history. Amazon says eligible product pages can show up to 365 days of pricing insights. Consumer Reports also recommends price-history services such as Keepa and CamelCamelCamel for Amazon products. Deals Editor Samantha B. Gordon writes: “Use tools like Keepa and CamelCamelCamel that can show price histories of Amazon products.” Treat a short-lived discount or a large percentage off as a prompt to check the item’s usual price, not as evidence by itself that the offer is exceptional. Consumer Reports’ Prime Day deal advice
  3. Compare the same model at other retailers. Competing stores may match prices. Include shipping, delivery timing, loyalty benefits, and return terms in the comparison; a lower sticker price may not be the better overall offer if the other terms are worse.
  4. Check who can buy at that price. Consumer Reports says most Prime Day deals generally require Prime, although some offers are open to everyone. Amazon describes the October 2026 event as Prime-member-exclusive. Check the terms of the particular offer and include any membership cost in your calculation before calling a Prime-only price a saving. A simple buy-or-wait decision

  • Buy during Prime Day or Prime Big Deal Days if the exact item is at a price you consider worthwhile based on its history and competing offers, and the eligibility and delivery terms work for you.
  • Consider waiting for Black Friday if you are shopping for a TV, can wait, and the current price is not compelling. Holiday-period TV discounts tend to be strongest, but no particular future price is guaranteed.
  • Do not wait just because Black Friday is coming if today’s price is already good for the item and a later deal could sell out or arrive too late for your needs.
