To focus a manual E-mount lens, enable Peaking Display for a quick visual cue, then use Focus Magnifier to inspect the important detail while turning the lens’s focus ring. Sony’s menu paths and feature availability vary by camera body, so use the model-specific Help Guide when the example paths below do not match your camera.
What focus peaking and magnification do
Focus peaking enhances outlines in areas the camera identifies as in focus. It is useful for quickly seeing where apparent sharpness falls across the frame. Focus Magnifier enlarges a selected image area so you can inspect a fine detail more closely. Use peaking for a quick overview and magnification when precise visual inspection of a small area matters. Neither feature is a numerical focus measurement.
Sony notes that Focus Magnifier and MF Assist availability and operation depend on the camera model. See Sony’s overview of AF and MF modes for model-dependent details.
Set up the camera for manual focusing
- Select Manual Focus (MF) if required. In MF, focus by turning the lens focus ring. Sony says Focus Magnifier and MF Assist can help you check focus while shooting in MF, although their availability and details vary by model. Consult your camera’s Help Guide for its specific controls.
- Turn on Peaking Display. On the Sony ILCE-9M3, the example path is MENU → Image (Focus) → Peaking Display → Peaking Display → On. In that menu, select a Peaking Level and Peaking Color that are easy to distinguish from the scene. Other bodies may place these settings elsewhere or use different wording. Sony documents the ILCE-9M3 example in its camera accessibility instructions.
- Open Focus Magnifier. On the ILCE-9M3, use MENU → Image (Focus) → Focus Assistant → Focus Magnifier. Use the center control to enlarge the image and the directional controls to move the selected area.
- Magnify the detail and fine-tune focus. Place the enlarged area over the subject detail that needs to be sharp, then rotate the lens focus ring until it looks clear. Treat peaking as a helpful cue, not a guarantee that the highlighted edge is critically focused.

Assign Focus Magnifier to a custom key
If you focus manually often, a custom key can save a trip through the menus. Sony’s ILCE-7RM6 customization guide explains assigning Focus Magnifier to a key for manual focus, including when using a manual lens or a lens without signal contacts. Use touch magnification only where supported
