First check whether the camera is powered on, set to display through its viewfinder, or sending video to a connected cable. Then compare the screen in live view, playback, and menus. If the camera still works, its viewfinder—or a supported external monitor—may keep it usable while you troubleshoot. Use your exact model’s manual for controls and reset steps; if its recommended checks do not restore the LCD, contact the manufacturer or a qualified repair provider.
Start with reversible checks
Confirm the camera is on and responsive
Check that the battery is charged and the camera powers up. Try a control such as playback or the menu button. If the camera is unresponsive, follow the power-cycle instructions in its manual rather than assuming the LCD has failed.
For example, Nikon’s Z9 troubleshooting guidance says to switch off an unresponsive camera and remove and reinsert the battery if it will not turn off. It warns that data being recorded at the time may be lost, although data already recorded is not affected. Do not interrupt an active recording casually.
Check the display selection
Press the control labeled DISP, Finder/LCD, or a monitor-mode equivalent. Names and button behavior vary by camera, so check the model’s manual. Some mirrorless cameras can show the image only in the electronic viewfinder, leaving the rear monitor blank. Nikon’s Z-series monitor guidance describes a “Viewfinder only” mode; select a mode that enables the monitor.

If the camera switches between the viewfinder and rear screen automatically, inspect the eye sensor near the viewfinder. Dust, lint, an eyecup, or another obstruction can interfere with automatic switching. Nikon lists foreign matter on the eye sensor as a possible cause. Clean it only as your manual permits; do not scrape or wet the sensor.
Disconnect display cables and check the lens cover
Remove any connected A/V cable and check the LCD again. On some cameras, connecting an A/V cable routes the picture to a television instead of the camera screen. If your model has a lens cap or cover, make sure it is removed or open. Press the display-information control more than once if your camera can hide shooting information or turn off its on-screen display.

Sony’s blank or dark LCD troubleshooting and related camera monitor guidance cover these kinds of checks. Follow the instructions for your own model; Sony’s steps are not universal across brands.
Use playback and menus to narrow down the symptom
Press playback to display a photo or video already recorded, then try opening a menu or information screen. Note what appears:

- Playback and menus appear, but live view is black: The LCD can display at least some camera output, so check live-view selection, the lens cap or cover, and model-specific lens or recording settings. This observation does not identify the exact cause.
- Playback, menus, and live view are all blank: The problem may involve more than the live-view setting, but this check alone cannot confirm that the LCD panel has failed.
- The viewfinder works but the rear screen does not: Use the display-selection and eye-sensor checks above, then consult the model’s manual for its monitor settings.
Sony’s camcorder troubleshooting guidance recommends checking playback and notes that a missing playback image can indicate an LCD malfunction. Treat that as a reason to continue model-specific troubleshooting, not as a diagnosis that applies to every camera.
Keep shooting with another display path, if available
If the camera remains responsive, the electronic viewfinder may provide a usable view even when the rear LCD does not. If you need a larger display or access to a camera image externally, check whether your exact model supports video output and whether its manual documents an external monitor or TV connection.

For certain Sony cameras, Sony’s micro-HDMI instructions describe connecting a monitor or TV to display the camera image. Compatibility is model-specific: confirm the camera has the required port and supports the output before buying a cable. This is a temporary display workaround, not a repair. On the models covered by that article, if the camera does not return to the LCD after the cable is disconnected, Sony directs users to Menu → Custom Settings → FINDER/MONITOR → Monitor. Other models may use different labels or behavior.

If power, display selection, sensor obstruction, and cable checks do not help, a reset may be the next step if the manufacturer recommends it. Sony’s troubleshooting steps recommend a factory reset after basic checks. Use the reset procedure for your exact camera and note any personalized settings you may want to restore afterward. A reset can clear settings; it cannot repair a physically damaged LCD, cable, or connector.

When to arrange service
Contact the manufacturer or a qualified camera repair provider if the LCD remains blank after the model-specific troubleshooting steps, or if the camera has visible impact, liquid, or other physical damage. Sony’s support guidance says repair may be required if its steps do not resolve the issue. General troubleshooting information cannot establish the cause, repair cost, warranty coverage, or turnaround time for an individual camera. Avoid treating generic online disassembly instructions as safe or suitable for every model.
