n8n and Activepieces are the first self-hosted Zapier alternatives to compare if you want a visual workflow builder. n8n combines visual workflows with custom code; Activepieces uses trigger-and-step flows. Node-RED may suit event-driven projects, while Windmill and Kestra are stronger candidates when workflows look more like scripts, jobs, or engineering orchestration. The right choice depends on your specific integrations, team skills, license requirements, and willingness to operate the service—not a single overall ranking.
What makes a self-hosted Zapier alternative a good fit?
“Self-hosted” describes where the software runs; it does not mean setup and ongoing operation take care of themselves. You or your organization remain responsible for the deployment, security, updates, backups, and monitoring. The products below document self-managed deployment routes, but the work and cost depend on your environment.
Before choosing a platform, write down the workflows you need to move or build. For each one, identify the exact trigger, action, authentication method, and any timing or failure-handling needs. Then assess how much code your team can maintain, what governance it needs, and whether the product’s license and edition allow your intended use.
How do the leading self-hosted options compare?
| Platform | Documented emphasis | Best question to ask | Important caveat |
|---|---|---|---|
| n8n | Visual workflow canvas, custom code, integrations, and self-hosted or cloud deployment. | Do you want a visual builder that you can extend with code? | It uses a fair-code model and publishes a Sustainable Use License. Check the current terms for your use case. |
| Activepieces | Visual trigger-and-step flows, app catalog, self-hosting, agents, and tables. | Do you want a Zapier-like visual flow model that you can run on your own infrastructure? | Verify the needed apps, actions, and features in the edition you plan to use. Its catalog total is a vendor claim. |
| Node-RED | Low-code programming for event-driven applications, extended with nodes. | Are your automations event- or device-oriented, and is a programming-oriented tool suitable for your team? | The reviewed official overview does not give a connector total comparable to the n8n and Activepieces figures. |
| Windmill | Scripts, APIs, background jobs, workflows, and UIs, with support for multiple programming languages. | Are you building developer-owned jobs or internal tools? | Its repository identifies AGPLv3 licensing and commercial offerings; check which terms apply to your deployment. |
| Kestra | Workflow orchestration with triggers, retries, concurrency, scripts, and several deployment paths. | Do you need explicit orchestration and deployment controls? | The reviewed documentation does not establish it as the closest no-code match to Zapier. |
Which tool is closest to Zapier’s visual workflow approach?
n8n: visual building with room for code
Consider n8n if you want to build visually but expect some workflows to need custom code. It supports both self-hosted and cloud operation, and its official repository advertised 1,500+ integrations when checked on October 4, 2026. That is a vendor-reported catalog size, not proof that a particular trigger, action, or authentication method is available.
#1 Best Overall
n8n describes itself as fair-code licensed and publishes a Sustainable Use License. Do not assume that source availability means unrestricted use: review the current license, particularly if you plan to embed the software, resell it, or provide it as a customer-facing service.
Activepieces: trigger-and-step flows
Activepieces documents a visual trigger-and-step flow model and says it can run on your own infrastructure. Its official documentation advertised 760+ apps when checked on October 4, 2026. This is also a vendor claim, and it is not directly comparable to another product’s catalog count. Check the individual app and action you need, along with the edition that includes the feature.
Rank #2
The platform also documents agents, tables, and governance features. Their availability may depend on the edition, so confirm those boundaries before designing around them.
When are Node-RED, Windmill, or Kestra better candidates?
Node-RED for event-driven applications
Node-RED characterizes itself as “Low-code programming for event-driven applications.” That makes it worth considering when your automations respond to events or involve devices. Its programming framing may be a less natural fit if you want a purely business-user-oriented flow builder. The reviewed official overview does not establish a connector count on the same basis as the figures published by n8n and Activepieces.
Rank #3
Windmill for developer-owned jobs and internal tools
Windmill focuses on scripts, APIs, background jobs, workflows, and UIs, with multiple programming languages. It is a stronger candidate when developers will own and maintain the automation rather than simply assemble no-code flows. Its repository identifies the project as AGPLv3 and also mentions commercial licenses and support; check the terms that apply to your intended deployment.
Kestra for explicit orchestration
Kestra documents orchestration features such as triggers, retries, concurrency, and scripts. Its deployment documentation describes Docker, Docker Compose, Kubernetes, a standalone server, and provider-specific arrangements. Consider it when deployment choices and orchestration controls matter; do not assume its positioning makes it the closest no-code substitute for Zapier.
Rank #4
How should you check integrations before committing?
A catalog total is only a starting point. For every workflow, verify the exact trigger and action, the authentication method, and any edition requirement. A connector existing in a catalog does not establish that it supports the particular operation your workflow needs.
- List the workflows. Record the event that starts each one, its required actions, and the systems it touches.
- Verify connector details. Check the vendor’s current app or integration documentation for each required trigger and action, plus authentication and edition availability.
- Map code needs. Identify any transformation or logic that will require code, and decide who will maintain it.
- Test failures as well as success. In a pilot, establish how the platform exposes errors and how your team will investigate and recover from a failed run. Do not infer reliability from product positioning.
- Confirm license and operating responsibilities. Review the applicable terms and decide who will handle deployment, security, updates, backups, and monitoring.
What does self-hosting require in practice?
Official documentation describes self-managed routes, including n8n deployment guidance for Docker Compose and cloud providers, Activepieces running on a user’s own infrastructure, and Kestra’s range of deployment options. Those routes establish that self-hosting is supported; they do not specify a universal server size, total cost, or amount of ongoing work. Those depend on the deployment and workload.

You do not necessarily need to buy new hardware: a self-managed service can run on infrastructure you already operate or on a suitable remote host. A mini PC is an optional local-computing choice, not a requirement established by these products’ deployment documentation. Whichever environment you choose, plan for service access, updates, backups, and monitoring before relying on automations in production.
Can you replace Zapier with n8n or Activepieces?
Possibly, if the platform you choose supports every connector operation and authentication method your workflows rely on, and if its licensing and edition fit your intended use. The product descriptions and catalog counts alone cannot establish that a particular migration will work. Validate representative workflows in a pilot before moving important automations, including how failures are surfaced and handled.
Practical verdict: Start with n8n and Activepieces for visual flows, then compare Node-RED for event-driven work or Windmill and Kestra for developer-led orchestration. Choose by verified workflow fit and operating responsibility rather than treating any option as a universal Zapier replacement.
