For the best picture and sound, set your Blu-ray player to send formats that every device in the HDMI chain can handle. Start with resolution set to Auto, then check 24p, HDR, HDMI connections, and audio output against your TV, receiver or soundbar, and the disc. The right menu names and options depend on the player, so use the manual for your exact model.
Start with resolution set to Auto
If your player offers Output Video Resolution or Resolution: Auto, use it as the starting point. Sony says Auto selects the optimum resolution for connected equipment on the models covered by its support guidance. Panasonic likewise recommends checking the connected equipment’s supported formats and using automatic HDMI Video Format selection where available. Sony’s resolution guidance and Panasonic’s 4K output guidance apply to their respective player families.
A fixed 4K setting is not automatically better: the TV, the selected HDMI input, and any receiver or soundbar between the player and TV must all accept or pass the signal. Sony notes that a player set to 4K can produce no picture if an intervening AV receiver cannot handle 4K. In that situation, switch back to Auto or connect the player directly to a 4K-compatible TV. If a display goes blank after changing a video mode, use the model’s documented recovery steps rather than cycling through arbitrary settings.
Keep 24p output for compatible film playback
24p output lets supported film material recorded at 24 frames per second reach a compatible display at that rate. Panasonic’s manuals for specified player families describe 4K/24p or 1080/24p output when the connected TV supports it; other Blu-ray or DVD material may be output at 60p. Panasonic’s 24p instructions explain the setting for covered models.

Leave 24p enabled or set it to Auto when the TV and signal path handle it correctly. Turn it off only if the connected TV rejects or distorts the signal. Sony’s advice to disable 24p is part of flicker troubleshooting for the UBP-X700 family and a stated incompatible-TV case, not a universal picture tweak. Sony’s flicker troubleshooting steps are scoped to that scenario.
Match HDR to the disc and every device in the path
HDR depends on compatibility across the player, disc, TV, and any receiver or soundbar carrying the video signal. An HDR setting cannot add HDR to a non-HDR display or to content that does not contain the format. Sony says that its applicable player adjusts HDR features to SDR according to TV type when used with a non-HDR TV. Sony’s HDR guidance describes the behavior for covered products.

- See the unrivalled visual clarity of 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray
- Play almost any disc and file format including DVDs
- Stunning picture with 4K upscaling up to 60p
- Easy set-up with included HDMI cable
- Listen to music from multiple formats
Specific formats also have their own requirements. For example, Panasonic says HDR10+ playback requires both an HDR10+-compatible connected device and a disc that supports HDR10+. Check the manual for the exact player’s format options and menu labels. Panasonic’s HDR10+ instructions cover this requirement.
Check the HDMI cable, port, and intermediate devices
For 4K output, the HDMI cable and every device in the chain need enough bandwidth for the selected signal. Sony recommends a 4K HDMI cable with 18 Gbps bandwidth or a Premium High Speed HDMI cable for the applicable setup guidance. Panasonic warns that some 4K/60p modes may not output correctly through a cable that does not support 18 Gbps. Check the TV’s input specifications too: some TVs support 4K only on particular HDMI inputs. Sony’s 4K setup guidance and Panasonic’s output guidance describe these model-specific requirements.

Choose audio output for the way the player is connected
Player connected directly to the TV
Use the player’s HDMI output that carries both video and audio. Some players have more than one HDMI output, so the chosen audio output must match the physical connection. In Sony’s cited dual-output example, a TV connected to OUT 1 should use Auto or HDMI1 for TV audio. If you hear nothing, confirm that the player is set to the connected HDMI port and the TV is on the correct input. Sony’s HDMI audio instructions cover the applicable models.

Player connected through a receiver or soundbar
Check two separate capabilities: whether the receiver or soundbar supports the disc’s audio format, and whether it can pass the chosen video format to the TV. Sony lists multichannel LPCM, Dolby TrueHD, Dolby Atmos, DTS-HD Master Audio, and DTS:X over HDMI for applicable products, but those capabilities should not be assumed for every Blu-ray player. Its listed digital-audio output is more limited. Sony’s supported audio format information is specific to the covered products.
For a narrower example, Panasonic’s soundbar guide for the DP-UB820 and DP-UB9000 describes using Dolby Audio and DTS/DTS-HD Bitstream and turning BD-Video Secondary Audio off for its stated Dolby Atmos/TrueHD setup. That guidance also describes separate video and audio HDMI outputs and a compatible soundbar-to-TV route. These settings are not a universal recipe for other players or connection layouts. Panasonic’s Atmos soundbar connection guide gives the model-specific details.

Treat Deep Color as a compatibility option, not a routine tweak
Deep Color output is useful only when the connected equipment supports the selected mode. Panasonic manuals describe it as an output option for compatible TVs. Sony’s recommendation to turn Deep Color off appears in a specific flicker and compatibility procedure for UBP-X700-family players; it is not a general setting for improving picture quality. If you see flicker or lose the picture, follow the troubleshooting steps for your exact player and display rather than disabling features preemptively. Sony’s UBP-X700-family troubleshooting guidance explains that case.
Choose a connection path that all devices can support
When deciding between a direct TV connection, routing through a receiver or soundbar, or using separate HDMI outputs for video and audio, check each part of the path:
- Video: The player, TV input, and any intermediate device must support the resolution, HDR format, and frame rate you want to use.
- Audio: The receiver or soundbar must support the disc’s audio format, and the player’s output setting must match its connection.
- HDMI ports: Confirm whether each player output carries video, audio, or audio only on your model.
- Cable: Verify the bandwidth required for the selected 4K mode before replacing a cable.
- Simpler test: If routing through a receiver produces no picture, a direct player-to-TV connection can help isolate the problem, but audio may then need a separate route to external speakers.
Menu labels and capabilities vary across manufacturers and models. Sony’s cited flicker steps apply to the UBP-X700 family, Panasonic’s Atmos soundbar procedure applies to the DP-UB820 and DP-UB9000, and the cited Panasonic manuals cover their specified player families. Use your own player’s manual and official support page to confirm the available settings and recovery procedure.
