If you want a new game with Castlevania-style gothic fantasy, weapons, spells, and RPG progression, start with Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night. For more official Castlevania, choose Castlevania: Dominus Collection. Hollow Knight and the Ori games are worthwhile genre alternatives, but lean toward exploration or platforming rather than Castlevania’s RPG-and-gothic mix.
Which game is the closest match to Castlevania?
Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night
Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night is the clearest fit if you want a spiritual successor rather than another entry in the Castlevania series. 505 Games describes it as “an exploration-focused, side-scroller action RPG by Koji Igarashi.” Its official description also highlights gothic dark fantasy, weapons, spells, and upgrade options—features that make it a natural pick for fans drawn to Castlevania’s action-RPG side. See the official 505 Games page.
That recommendation is based on the game’s stated features, not a claim that it reproduces every Castlevania game or that it has been tested here. Steam lists ArtPlay as developer, 505 Games as publisher, and June 18, 2019 as the release date. Its English-language review snapshot was 92% positive from 10,935 reviews when accessed for this article; Steam ratings can change over time. Check the Steam listing for current platform and store details.
Which games are official Castlevania?
Castlevania: Dominus Collection
If you want the series itself rather than a successor, Castlevania: Dominus Collection brings together three games: Dawn of Sorrow, Portrait of Ruin, and Order of Ecclesia. The collection offers more than one combat approach: Portrait of Ruin uses a tag-team mechanic that affects combat and exploration, while Order of Ecclesia centers combat on glyphs. GameSpot lists PC, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and Nintendo Switch, and gives August 27, 2024 as its release date. See GameSpot’s collection guide for its coverage; confirm current availability and edition details with a retailer.

Which alternatives suit different tastes?
| Game | Best fit | How it differs from Castlevania |
|---|---|---|
| Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night | Gothic fantasy, weapons and spells, and RPG progression | The closest match here as a separate game, not an official Castlevania title. |
| Castlevania: Dominus Collection | Players who want official series entries and varied combat systems | It is a collection of three Castlevania games, including tag-team play and glyph-based combat. |
| Hollow Knight | Players prioritizing 2D exploration | A distinct action-adventure take on the genre, not a direct Castlevania-style RPG recommendation. |
| Ori and the Will of the Wisps | Players drawn to platforming and storytelling | Its emphasis is platforming action and story rather than Castlevania-like RPG progression. |
The descriptions for Hollow Knight and Ori and the Will of the Wisps emphasize 2D exploration, and platforming action and storytelling respectively. They are good choices if your interest is broader Metroidvania variety, but they are less specifically aligned with the gothic RPG features that point to Bloodstained. See Metacritic’s game catalog.
