No. Current evidence does not validate a consumer gut microbiome test as a way to calculate how fast an individual’s brain is aging. Researchers have found associations between gut microbiome patterns, brain-imaging estimates and cognitive measures, but those findings are not a personal brain-age clock, diagnosis or prediction of future decline.

What the studies actually show

A 2025 study found an association, not a test

A study published in Alzheimer’s Research & Therapy examined 292 people recruited from memory clinics in South Korea. Researchers collected stool samples, performed MRI scans and clinical assessments, and used a pretrained model to estimate brain age. They reported links between microbiome patterns, cognitive scores and estimated brain age. After accounting for chronological age, sex and education, brain age partially mediated the association between microbiome dysbiosis and cognitive performance. Read the 2025 study.

The study was observational and involved a selected clinical sample. It did not establish that microbiome changes cause brain aging, predict an individual’s future cognitive decline, or validate a retail stool kit to measure brain-aging speed. The authors’ conclusion that “brain age mediates the link” describes their interpretation of the observed data, not a consumer testing capability.

A 2026 feasibility study was small and showed overlap

A June 2026 proof-of-concept study combined stool metagenomics with cognitive, behavioral and dietary assessments in adults aged 50–90 in the Washington, DC area. Seventeen participants had sufficient assessments: 11 healthy controls and six people with mild cognitive impairment. Their microbiome profiles substantially overlapped, and some trends involved uncommon, poorly characterized or unassigned taxa. The authors called the approach feasible while emphasizing “biological and behavioral heterogeneity” and limits of species-level inference. Read the NIST publication record.

That work explored whether an integrated research method could be used; it did not validate a clinical or consumer brain-age test.

Earlier human and animal findings are not consumer-test evidence

The National Institute on Aging summarized a 2023 study involving 164 cognitively healthy volunteers aged 68–94. The findings raised the possibility that stool samples might one day correlate with early Alzheimer’s risk. The NIA also described follow-up research to clarify whether microbiome differences cause or follow brain changes. That is a research possibility, not an available Alzheimer’s-risk test. In April 2026, NIH reported that age-related microbiome changes in mice affected gut-to-brain communication and performance on memory tasks. The report said, “If these results hold true in humans,” the findings might inform future treatments. Animal results can support biological plausibility, but they cannot establish how a human stool test performs. Read the NIH summary.

Why there is no settled “brain-aging” microbiome score

Microbiome studies have not converged on a consistent set of organisms that reliably measures cognitive aging. A 2024 systematic review found six eligible healthy-aging studies among 1,752 records screened; the studies differed in which microbial taxa and cognitive outcomes they examined. Results varied with the taxonomic level and measurement method. Read the systematic review.

Viome Full Body Test – Gut, Oral & Cellular Health Microbiome Home Kit
  • YOUR WHOLE-BODY HEALTH PICTURE FROM ONE KIT: Analyzes your gut microbiome, oral microbiome, and cellular health together with a single at-home test. See how your whole body is connected instead of testing one system at a time.
  • COMPREHENSIVE TESTING: Measures 300,000+ biomarkers from stool, saliva, and blood samples. You get 70+ health scores, including BioAge, InflammAging, Heart & Metabolic Health, Energy & Performance, Mood, Memory & Focus, Immunity, Gut & Digestive Health, Gut Lining Health, Oral Health, and Cellular Stress.
  • FLAGS POTENTIAL ISSUES: Gut scores identify signs of imbalance that may be influencing your digestion and gut barrier integrity. Oral scores identify microbial activity linked to bad breath, gum health, and dental health. Cellular scores show how your nutrition and microbiome may affect metabolism, energy production, aging, and cardiovascular health.
  • RNA NOT DNA: Your DNA doesn’t change, even though your body does. It can't explain why you felt fine last year and don't now. RNA can. Full Body Intelligence measures RNA, what your genes are doing, for precise insights and recommendations built for what your body needs now. It’s the difference between having a symptom and knowing what’s causing it.
  • SEE YOUR BIOLOGICAL AGE: Results include a biological age score alongside cellular health markers. See how your body is aging next to the number on your birth certificate.

The small 2026 feasibility study also notes methodological variability, limited statistical power and incomplete consideration of behavioral and lifestyle factors. Together, these limitations mean that a stool profile cannot currently be interpreted as a dependable measure of cognitive status or the rate at which one person’s brain is aging.

How microbiome testing differs from brain and cognitive assessments

Approach What it measures What the cited evidence supports
Stool microbiome profile Microbial material in a stool sample Researchers study associations with brain and cognitive measures; no consumer test is validated here to calculate an individual’s brain-aging rate.
MRI-derived brain-age estimate A model-based estimate derived from brain imaging Used in research, including the 2025 study; it is not the same as a microbiome score or a diagnosis.
Cognitive assessment Performance on specified thinking or memory tasks Used in clinical and research contexts. NIA discusses validation of cognitive tools against imaging and other diagnostic information; the USPSTF has found insufficient evidence to recommend cognitive screening. See NIA guidance.
p-tau217 blood biomarker An Alzheimer’s-related blood biomarker A distinct research and clinical pathway, not a microbiome test or general brain-aging clock. Read the NIH report.

These methods answer different questions and should not be treated as interchangeable. In particular, an MRI brain-age estimate is not a stool-test result, and neither alone should be presented as a diagnosis.

What to do if you are concerned about memory

Do not use a consumer microbiome result to decide whether your brain is aging unusually quickly. If you are concerned about changes in memory or thinking, discuss those concerns with a healthcare professional, who can consider an appropriate assessment. Cognitive evaluation is distinct from consumer stool profiling.

The studies described here do not establish that a retail microbiome test, probiotic, supplement or diet kit can determine or reverse an individual’s brain-aging rate. The 2026 feasibility paper discusses diet and readiness for behavioral change as contextual factors, but it does not validate a consumer intervention that changes brain age.

5Strands Comprehensive Gut Health Test Including 1180 Food & Drink Items
  • DISCOVER SPECIFIC DIETARY TRIGGERS. The screening pinpoints which foods items your gut may have trouble breaking down properly. This internal gut stress can turn into physical symptoms like bloating, diarrhea, acne, headaches, and joint pain. Identifying these triggers allows you to make targeted dietary adjustments that can reduce discomfort and support better nutrient absorption.
  • CLEAR INTOLERANCE LEVELS. The tested food items are sorted into four categories: no significant response, mild, moderate, or high intolerance. This format helps you easily see which foods may be tolerated in small amounts and which should be avoided for a reset period, allowing your body to heal and rebalance.
  • COVERS 30 DISTINCT FOOD AND ADDITIVE CATEGORIES. Our hair analysis test evaluates items across proteins, dairy, grains, fruits, vegetables, legumes, nuts, seafood, mushrooms, herbs, and spices. It also screens for common additives such as preservatives, emulsifiers, stabilizers, thickeners, food dyes, sweeteners, probiotics, and prebiotics, giving you a detailed look at potential triggers from both whole foods and processed ingredients.
  • NON-INVASIVE COLLECTION PROCESS. A small hair sample is all that is required, collected in the comfort of your own home. This method avoids the hassle of needles while giving you reliable data about your body’s interaction with a wide variety of foods.
