For most setups, connect the Blu-ray player’s HDMI OUT to the TV, then connect the TV’s HDMI ARC/eARC port to the soundbar’s TV OUT/ARC port. If your devices lack ARC/eARC, use optical audio from the TV to the soundbar, or connect the player through a soundbar that has HDMI IN. The right choice depends on the ports and supported audio formats on your specific models.
Choose the right connection path
Check the labels beside the ports on the player, TV, and soundbar before connecting anything. Port locations and menu names vary by model, so consult the devices’ manuals when a label or setting is unclear.
| Connection path | Use it when | Connections | What to check |
|---|---|---|---|
| Player → TV → soundbar | The TV and soundbar have HDMI ARC/eARC. | Player HDMI OUT → TV HDMI IN; TV HDMI ARC/eARC → soundbar TV OUT/ARC. | Both ends of the TV-to-soundbar link must have ARC/eARC. A regular HDMI port does not provide ARC. See Sony’s HDMI ARC connection guidance and Sony’s TV-to-audio-system connection instructions. |
| Player → soundbar → TV | The soundbar has HDMI IN and can pass video to the TV. | Player HDMI OUT → soundbar HDMI IN; soundbar HDMI OUT/TV OUT → TV HDMI IN. | Confirm the soundbar supports video passthrough and the audio formats you want. Sony describes this route for external devices such as Blu-ray players: Sony’s connection guidance. |
| Player → TV by HDMI; TV → soundbar by optical | ARC/eARC is unavailable or not working, and both TV and soundbar have compatible optical ports. | Player HDMI OUT → TV HDMI IN; TV optical digital audio OUT → soundbar optical IN. | Optical sends audio to the soundbar, while HDMI carries the picture to the TV. In Sony’s described optical setup, HDMI-dependent features such as TV-remote volume control and power interlock are not available. See Sony’s connection guidance and Sony’s TV-to-audio-system connection instructions. |
Connect the player through the TV with HDMI ARC/eARC
This is the usual starting point when both the TV and soundbar support ARC or eARC. HDMI ARC sends audio from the TV to the audio system over the TV-to-soundbar HDMI link, so you do not need a separate optical audio cable for that connection. ARC can also support device-control features, depending on the equipment and settings. Sony explains ARC in its official ARC guide.
- Connect the Blu-ray player’s HDMI OUT to an HDMI IN on the TV.
- Connect the TV port labeled HDMI ARC or eARC to the soundbar port labeled TV OUT/ARC or HDMI OUT/ARC. Use a High Speed HDMI cable for ARC, as specified in Sony’s ARC guidance; check your manuals for cable requirements, particularly for eARC.
- Turn on the TV and soundbar. On the TV, select the soundbar or Audio System as the sound output if needed. Select the TV/ARC input on the soundbar if it does not switch automatically. Exact menu labels vary.
- Select the TV input connected to the Blu-ray player, then play a disc to test picture and sound.
Connect the Blu-ray player to the soundbar first
Use this path if the soundbar has an HDMI input and you want the soundbar to receive the player’s audio directly. It can also be worth trying if you have an audio-format or delay problem on the TV-to-soundbar route. What works depends on the soundbar’s passthrough capabilities and the formats supported by every device in the chain.

- Choose the soundbar input connected to the player. If needed, select the soundbar’s TV connection as the TV source or input.
- Play a disc and confirm that the TV displays the picture and the soundbar produces audio.
This route generally requires two HDMI cables. Check the player, soundbar, TV, and disc specifications together rather than assuming the soundbar will pass through every video or audio format. Sony notes that supported sound formats vary by audio device in its connection guidance.
Use optical audio when ARC/eARC is not available
Optical is a practical fallback if the TV has an optical digital audio output and the soundbar has a compatible optical input. It is a separate audio link: HDMI carries the Blu-ray picture from the player to the TV, and optical carries audio from the TV to the soundbar.

Check cables and audio-format support
- HDMI direction: The player’s HDMI OUT connects to a TV HDMI IN or soundbar HDMI IN. For ARC/eARC, connect the TV’s labeled ARC/eARC port to the soundbar’s labeled TV OUT/ARC port.
- Cable count: Player-to-TV-to-soundbar by ARC/eARC usually uses one HDMI cable for the player-to-TV link and one for the TV-to-soundbar link. Player-to-soundbar-to-TV uses two HDMI cables. Cable requirements can vary; follow the manuals.
- Optical cable: Use one only if both the TV and soundbar have compatible optical ports. It does not replace the HDMI cable carrying the Blu-ray picture to the TV.
- Audio formats: Do not assume that every route passes every format. Sony says supported formats differ by audio device. For Dolby Atmos, its guidance calls for a compatible Atmos source/player, disc, and soundbar or speakers; the described Atmos arrangement specifies a Premium High Speed HDMI cable with Ethernet. Verify the capabilities and settings of the full chain in the device guidance.
Troubleshoot missing picture or sound
- No sound from the soundbar: Check that the soundbar is set to the input receiving audio, the TV output is set to the soundbar or Audio System, and the cables are firmly seated.
- ARC does not work: Verify that the cable runs between the ports specifically labeled ARC/eARC. An ordinary HDMI port is not an ARC port. Check both device manuals and the TV’s audio-output settings.
- Picture but no sound: Confirm the player is connected to the selected TV or soundbar input, then check audio output settings on the TV and soundbar. Try the optical route if both devices support it, or route the player through the soundbar if it has HDMI IN.
- A format is missing or audio is delayed: Check supported formats and passthrough settings for the player, disc, TV, and soundbar. Trying a direct player-to-soundbar HDMI connection may help, but compatibility depends on the models.
- No picture through the soundbar: Confirm the soundbar supports video passthrough on the relevant input and output, or connect the player directly to the TV instead.
