What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Choose a gaming PC by starting with the games you play and the resolution, frame rate, graphics settings, and ray-tracing features you want—not by buying to a processor or graphics-card label alone. Then check the exact CPU, GPU, VRAM, system memory, and storage against each game’s current official requirements. There is no single specification that guarantees the same experience across every open-world game.
Set your target before comparing PCs
Write down the demanding games you want to play, then choose the display resolution and visual target you care about. For example, decide whether you want standard graphics or ray tracing, and whether your priority is higher image quality or a particular frame rate. Requirements are game- and setting-specific, and can change with updates.
Look up the publisher’s latest PC requirements for each game. Compare the full configuration: processor, graphics card, graphics memory (VRAM), system RAM, and storage. A PC that meets one game’s minimum may not meet another game’s recommended target, or the target you want for the same game.
Use Cyberpunk 2077 as a game-specific example
CD PROJEKT RED’s requirements for Cyberpunk 2077 and Phantom Liberty apply starting with Update 2.0. The publisher says the game is both graphics- and processor-intensive. Its table separates standard graphics from ray tracing and names a target resolution, preset, expected frame rate, and system components for each tier. These are requirements for those titles and targets—not a universal guide to every open-world game. See the publisher’s current system-requirements page.

The publisher states that DLSS Frame Generation was enabled for its Overdrive measurement. Its stated FPS figures are targets, not guarantees: actual performance can vary with hardware and software configuration, graphics settings, and output resolution. The publisher describes the update’s minimum target as 1080p, low settings, and an average of 30 FPS; its requirements-update explanation provides that context: CD PROJEKT RED’s requirements update.
How to balance the components
Graphics card and VRAM
Match the GPU to the game, resolution, graphics preset, and ray-tracing target you selected. The Cyberpunk table changes both graphics-card class and VRAM across its tiers, so a card suitable for a low 1080p target should not be assumed to deliver a 4K or ray-traced target. Check the exact card model and its VRAM rather than relying on a broad tier name.

Processor
Check the game’s listed CPU requirements as well as its GPU requirements. In CD PROJEKT RED’s example, processor recommendations change between performance targets, and the publisher specifically warns that the game is processor-intensive as well as graphics-intensive. Avoid spending on a higher CPU tier without a game or performance target that calls for it.
System memory
Use the game-specific RAM requirement as your baseline and consider that the operating system and background applications also use memory. Cyberpunk’s published tiers range from 12 GB at the non-ray-traced minimum to 24 GB at the listed Overdrive target. That range describes this game’s targets; it does not establish a universal RAM requirement for open-world games.
Rank #3
- Processor specifications: Adopting AMD Ryzen 5 5600 processor, with a basic clock speed of 3.5GHz and a turbo frequency of 4.4GHz, it can achieve fast response computing performance

- Gaming Performance: Designed to handle modern gaming titles and graphics-intensive tasks with smooth frame rates and visual quality
- Desktop System: Complete gaming desktop computer system ready for setup and use out of the box
SSD and capacity
Confirm both the required drive type and the space available after installation. Cyberpunk’s Update 2.0 requirements specify SSD storage, with NVMe listed for several higher tiers. CD PROJEKT RED says its move away from HDD support reflects SSDs’ faster loading, improved streaming, and better overall performance compared with HDDs. That is the publisher’s explanation for this game’s requirement change, not a rule that every game has the same storage requirement.
Evaluate a prebuilt PC by its actual parts
For a prebuilt gaming desktop PC, compare the exact CPU and GPU models, GPU VRAM, installed RAM, and SSD type and capacity with your chosen game requirements. A general label such as “mid-range” does not tell you whether the machine meets a particular target. Also check the local price and the precise configuration being sold; no specific PC model or current regional price is established here.

HP’s 2026 buying guide discusses component selection for games and proposes configurations including a Ryzen 7 or Core i7-class processor, an RTX 5070 Super-class GPU, and 32 GB of DDR5 for its mid-range tier. These are HP’s manufacturer recommendations, not neutral cross-vendor requirements or independent benchmark results. Treat them as one vendor’s guidance, then verify the exact game requirements and parts in the PC you are considering. Read HP’s gaming-PC guide.

A gaming laptop may suit someone who needs portability, but compare it as a laptop rather than assuming a desktop and laptop with similar component names will perform or upgrade the same way. HP’s manufacturer guide notes that laptops have different thermal and upgrade limitations from desktops; cooling and power delivery typically are not user-upgradeable. That is manufacturer guidance, not an independent head-to-head performance test.

Check upgrade compatibility before buying parts
If upgrading an existing PC, do not assume a graphics card, RAM kit, or NVMe SSD will fit or work simply because it appears in a game’s requirements. Check the motherboard, case clearance, power supply, cooling, and storage interface against the specific component. Without the exact system and component models, compatibility cannot be established.
Quick Recap
A practical buying checklist
- Name the games you intend to play and consult each publisher’s current requirements.
- Choose your target resolution, graphics preset, frame-rate goal, and whether ray tracing matters.
- Compare exact CPU and GPU models, GPU VRAM, system RAM, and storage type and capacity.
- For a prebuilt, verify the configuration actually included in the listing rather than relying on a tier label.
- For a laptop, weigh portability against its distinct thermal and upgrade constraints.
- For an upgrade, verify compatibility with the rest of the system before purchasing.
