Check the free space on the exact drive or console storage where the game will install, then use built-in cleanup and move files you want to keep. If you use Windows, Steam, or PS5, the steps below cover safe ways to reclaim space without deleting unfamiliar system files or assuming every game needs the same amount of extra room.
1. Check where the game will install
First confirm which drive or storage area the installer is targeting. A Windows PC may have several drives, while a PS5 distinguishes console storage, M.2 storage, and USB extended storage. On Windows, open This PC in File Explorer to see available space on connected drives. In a game launcher, check whether you can choose a different install location.
Pause or finish other large downloads and installs if they are competing for space. Do not assume a universal free-space buffer: download, unpacking, update, and platform-reservation needs vary by game and platform, and there is no one figure that applies to every installation.
2. Reclaim space safely on Windows
Review Cleanup recommendations
- Open Settings > System > Storage.
- Open Cleanup recommendations and review the categories and files Windows identifies, such as temporary files, large or unused files, cloud-synced files, and unused apps.
- Select only items you recognize and want to remove. Check the displayed estimate of space to be saved before confirming.
Windows’ estimate is specific to the items selected on your device, not a guarantee of how much any PC will recover. For Microsoft’s instructions, see Free up drive space in Windows.

Use Storage Sense with its defaults in mind
In Settings > System > Storage, Storage Sense can automatically remove temporary files and items in the Recycle Bin. Its default settings do not clear Downloads or cloud files, so do not treat enabling it as permission to delete those. Review its options before changing what it removes. Microsoft explains the feature in Manage drive space with Storage Sense.
If your Windows version does not offer Storage Sense, Microsoft also documents Disk Cleanup. Be especially careful with Previous Windows Installation(s): deleting those files removes the ability to roll back to the previous Windows version.

3. Move personal files instead of deleting them
Look for large files you recognize in Videos, Music, Pictures, and Downloads. Sort folders by size, then move infrequently used files to another internal drive or an external drive if you want to keep them. You can also choose another drive for new content where Windows offers that option.
If you delete files, empty the Recycle Bin to reclaim the space. Avoid manually removing unfamiliar Windows folders or game files outside the relevant launcher; doing so can break applications or leave an installation in an inconsistent state.

4. Make room by moving a Steam game
If another installed Steam game is taking space, moving it can be a better option than uninstalling it. Use Steam’s supported move process and back up the steamapps folder first; see Steam Support: Move a Steam Installation and Games.
Before moving or uninstalling, check how the particular game’s saves are handled. Steam Cloud does not cover every third-party save location, so confirm that important saves are synced or backed up rather than assuming the game files include them.

5. Free space on a PS5 without confusing game data and saves
Delete or trim installed games and apps
- Open Settings > Storage > Console Storage > Games and Apps.
- Select a game or app you no longer need, or inspect its options.
- Where Customize is available, use it to select optional game data you do not need. This selective option is available only for some titles.
Saved data is managed separately from installed game files. Handle saves through Settings > Saved Data and Game/App Settings; PlayStation describes PS Plus cloud uploads and copying PS4 save data to USB in its PS5 storage space support guide.

PS5 M.2 SSD: play PS5 games directly
A compatible M.2 SSD can be used to download, update, and play PS5 games directly. Sony specifies a PCIe Gen4x4 M.2 NVMe drive with a Key M connector, 250 GB–8 TB capacity, and one of these form factors: 2230, 2242, 2260, 2280, or 22110. The drive must be no more than 25 mm wide and fit Sony’s listed length and thickness limits. Sony recommends sequential read speed of at least 5,500 MB/s and effective heat dissipation, such as a heatsink and heat-transfer sheet; M.2 SATA is not supported.

Check the complete drive and heatsink dimensions against Sony’s instructions before buying. Sony cautions that matching the listed specifications does not guarantee every third-party drive will work. USB extended storage: archive PS5 games, but not direct-play them
USB extended storage serves a different role from M.2. PS5 games can be moved to USB storage, but they must be copied back to console storage or M.2 before you can play them.
