For PC gaming, put Windows and the games you play regularly on an SSD if your computer supports one. Keep an HDD for games you play less often and other large files when you need the capacity. The main expected gain from an SSD is shorter loading and less waiting on storage—not a guaranteed increase in frame rate.

SSD vs. HDD for PC games: what changes?

An SSD is the better place for Windows and games you launch often because it can access game data more quickly. Microsoft’s Windows gaming-PC guidance recommends an SSD for Windows and games, and says an HDD is best reserved for bulk storage.

The practical difference is most apparent while a game loads or when it needs to retrieve data from storage. The size of the change depends on the game, how it accesses data, the rest of the PC, and the conditions under which performance is measured. There is no single SSD-versus-HDD load-time ratio that applies to every game.

Do games load faster on an SSD?

Often, but the amount varies by title and setup. In a 2025 comparison, PCWorld reported that its HDD load time for Marvel Rivals was over seven times slower than its SSD result. In the same tested setup, Cyberpunk 2077 took almost a minute longer to load from the HDD. Those are examples from PCWorld’s test, not predictions for every PC or a typical improvement across games. See PCWorld’s comparison for its results.

Moving a game to an SSD can also help when delays in disk responses cause pauses during play, as Steam notes in its hardware troubleshooting guidance. It will not eliminate pauses caused by other system limits or by the game itself.

Does an SSD increase FPS?

Do not choose an SSD expecting a general FPS boost. Faster storage primarily improves loading and data access; frame rate depends on multiple system resources and configurations, including the CPU and graphics hardware. Steam’s software performance guidance treats game performance as affected by more than storage alone.

If disk-response delays are causing a particular game to pause, an SSD may reduce those interruptions. That is different from raising the frame rate consistently.

Where DirectStorage fits

DirectStorage is designed to let supported games make fuller use of fast storage, such as NVMe SSDs, while reducing CPU overhead for storage reads. Microsoft describes it as a feature for high-speed storage with high throughput and minimal CPU overhead in its DirectStorage documentation.

That capability does not mean every game supports DirectStorage or that an NVMe drive guarantees a dramatic improvement. UL says its 3DMark Storage Benchmark feature test demonstrates a near-best-case scenario: it removes variables such as asset management and other GPU work. A benchmark designed to isolate a feature should not be treated as a typical result for every game.

Should you choose SATA or NVMe?

First check what your PC can accept. SATA and NVMe are different SSD options, and the right one depends on the system’s supported interface, physical form factor, available drive bays or M.2 slots, and your budget. Microsoft’s game installation and maintenance guidance discusses storage considerations, but there is no universal drive type or model that fits every PC.

How to prioritize a storage upgrade

  1. Identify where Windows and your frequently played games are installed. If they are on an HDD, prioritize a compatible SSD for those workloads.
  2. Choose a supported SSD interface. Decide between SATA and NVMe only after checking your PC’s slots, bays, form-factor support, and budget.
  3. Keep the HDD for capacity where speed matters less. Less frequently played games and large files can remain on it if slower access is acceptable.
  4. Set expectations around the benefit. Expect shorter loads and potentially fewer storage-related waits in affected workloads, not a promised FPS increase.
  5. Consider DirectStorage a game-specific feature. Its benefit depends on supported games and workloads, not merely on buying an NVMe SSD.

A practical mixed-storage setup

For many gaming PCs, the sensible arrangement is an SSD for Windows and active games, with an HDD for bulk files and games that do not need quick access. If you can add only one drive, prioritize the compatible SSD when the operating system or games you play most are still on an HDD. If your main need is inexpensive bulk capacity rather than shorter waits, an HDD can still serve that role.
