A dedicated player is worth considering when its specific format support or connection options solve a real need in your setup. The right choice depends on your exact model, the discs you watch, and your TV and audio equipment—not on an assumption that one type of device always looks better.
At a glance: which should you choose?
| Your situation | Practical choice | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| You already have a disc-equipped PS5 and watch UHD Blu-ray, Blu-ray, or DVD | Try the PS5 before buying another device. | Confirm your exact console model and whether its disc playback and audio connections meet your needs. PlayStation lists the supported disc formats and disc-video audio options in its disc playback support page and PS5 FAQ. |
| You have a compatible PS5 Digital Edition model group | Check whether the separately sold drive is compatible with your exact model. | PlayStation identifies eligible model groups and the CFI-ZDD1-series drive on its support page. |
| You want Dolby Vision from UHD Blu-ray discs | Consider a dedicated player only after confirming the exact model and firmware. | Sony says the UBP-X700 supports HDR10 out of the box and gained Dolby Vision through a firmware update. Check the product page and the relevant device and disc compatibility. |
| Your receiver or sound system needs a particular connection arrangement | Compare the actual outputs on each device before deciding. | Sony lists dual HDMI outputs and multiple disc and audio formats for the UBP-X700 specifications. |
What formats can the device play?
PS5
PlayStation lists Ultra HD Blu-ray, standard Blu-ray, and DVD playback for compatible PS5 consoles with a disc drive. That makes a disc-equipped PS5 a practical starting point for common movie collections; a separate player is not automatically necessary. Confirm your console model and supported disc formats using PlayStation’s disc playback guidance.
Some PS5 Digital Edition model groups can use a separately sold CFI-ZDD1-series disc drive. Compatibility depends on the model group, so check the console’s model number against PlayStation’s current support information before purchasing a drive.
Sony UBP-X700
Sony lists UHD Blu-ray, Blu-ray, DVD, and additional disc formats for the UBP-X700. Its specifications page is the place to verify whether it covers a less common format in your collection.

Do not assume every product with a similar name has identical specifications. Sony has a separate UBP-X700K specifications page; verify the exact suffix and regional model rather than carrying features from one variant over to another.
Does HDR support make one option better?
For UHD Blu-ray, check whether the player supports the HDR format used by the disc and whether your TV supports it. Sony’s UBP-X700 product page states that HDR10 works out of the box and Dolby Vision was added through a firmware update. That claim applies to the product context Sony documents; confirm the exact SKU, current firmware, and compatibility with your display and content before relying on Dolby Vision.

HDR support is a reason to compare specific models, not proof that a dedicated player will deliver a visibly better picture in every setup. The available product documentation establishes features, not comparative picture-quality results from testing.
Will the audio work with your receiver or sound system?
PlayStation’s November 9, 2020 PS5 FAQ says Dolby Atmos and DTS:X are available for Blu-ray and Ultra HD Blu-ray disc video when the console is connected to supported equipment. The receiver or sound system and its configuration matter; consult the guidance for your specific devices rather than assuming that the format name alone guarantees the desired output.

Sony lists Dolby Atmos and DTS:X output and two HDMI outputs for the UBP-X700 on its specifications page. Separate HDMI outputs can be useful when planning a connection to a TV and receiver, but check your receiver, display, and the player’s model documentation to confirm the arrangement works for your system.
What else should you check before choosing?
- Drive inclusion: Make sure the console actually has a compatible disc drive, or verify add-on drive compatibility for your exact PS5 Digital Edition model group.
- Your collection: Check support for the specific disc formats you own, especially if they go beyond UHD Blu-ray, Blu-ray, and DVD.
- HDR format: Match the player’s documented capabilities to your UHD discs and TV. Check firmware requirements where applicable.
- Audio path: Confirm that the player or console, receiver, and sound system support the format and connection you intend to use.
- HDMI cable and display: Sony says UBP-X700 4K UHD output requires a compatible 4K display and an appropriate HDMI cable; it recommends a High Speed or Premium High Speed cable supporting 18 Gbps. See Sony’s 4K output guidance.
- Model suffix and region: Check the exact product variant and current manufacturer documentation instead of assuming similarly named models share every feature.
What about Xbox?
The available official-source information here does not establish current Xbox Series X physical-disc video features well enough for a reliable model-by-model comparison. Check Microsoft’s current documentation for the exact Xbox model you own before making a decision based on disc formats or HDR support; no definitive Xbox-versus-PS5 feature verdict is warranted from the information cited in this article.
