Broadcom may suit dividend investors prioritizing potential dividend growth who can tolerate technology-sector volatility and company-specific risks. Its board declared a quarterly dividend of $0.65 per share on September 2, 2026. That is not a guaranteed future payment: Broadcom says the board may reduce or discontinue dividends. Whether the stock belongs in a portfolio also depends on its price and valuation, the investor’s need for current income, and existing exposure to technology and AI companies.
What Broadcom’s latest dividend means
Broadcom’s September 2, 2026 results release says its board approved a cash dividend of $0.65 per share, payable September 30 to shareholders of record September 21. At that rate, four quarterly payments would total $2.60 per share over a year—but that is an arithmetic illustration, not a forecast or commitment to maintain the rate. Broadcom’s Q3 FY2026 release
The per-share payment alone does not tell you the dividend yield. Yield depends on the share price, which changes over time; no live price or current yield is established here. Check the price and calculate or verify the yield on the date you make a comparison.
How much cash the business is generating
Broadcom reported $13.7 billion in free cash flow on $29.6 billion in revenue for Q3 FY2026, with free cash flow equal to 46% of revenue. It also reported paying $3.1 billion in dividends during that quarter. For FY2025, the company reported $26.9 billion in free cash flow and $11.1 billion returned through cash dividends. These are company-reported results from different reporting periods, not a forecast of future dividend coverage. Q3 FY2026 results · Broadcom’s 2026 proxy statement

Free cash flow can help investors assess the cash a business generated after certain expenditures, but it is not an automatic pool reserved for dividends. Broadcom cautions that its measure omits components of the cash-flow statement and may not be comparable with similarly named measures used by other companies. Cash generation can also change with business conditions, investment needs, and debt obligations.
What Broadcom sells—and why the mix matters
Broadcom operates in semiconductors and infrastructure software. In FY2025, it reported $36.9 billion in semiconductor revenue, including $20.2 billion from AI semiconductors, and $27.0 billion in infrastructure software revenue. In Q3 FY2026, semiconductors represented 70% of revenue and infrastructure software 30%. The company attributed growth to custom AI accelerators and adoption of VMware Cloud Foundation. AI-related semiconductors are a prominent current growth driver, not a guarantee that growth will persist. CEO Hock Tan said on September 2, 2026, that Q3 AI semiconductor revenue was $16.7 billion, up 221% year over year and 54% quarter over quarter. Those figures and the explanation of demand are management’s statements, not an independent forecast. Infrastructure software, including VMware-derived offerings, gives Broadcom another significant business, but it brings its own competition and customer-adoption risks.
Risks dividend investors should weigh
Broadcom’s filings and results release identify risks that may affect its earnings, cash generation, share price, and ability to pay dividends:
Rank #3
- Semiconductor cyclicality and rapid change: Industry demand can fluctuate, and product markets can change as technology evolves, including in response to AI.
- Customer concentration and demand timing: Losing a significant customer or seeing customer demand shift can affect results.
- Manufacturing and supplier dependence: Broadcom relies on contract manufacturing and a limited number of suppliers.
- Competition and margins: Winning semiconductor business while maintaining margins is not assured.
- Software competition and adoption: Infrastructure software results depend in part on customer acceptance and the company’s ability to compete.
- Acquisition integration: Integrating acquisitions can create challenges, including as Broadcom incorporates acquired businesses.
- Debt and cash demands: Significant indebtedness means the company must generate sufficient cash to service and repay debt as well as fund other needs.
Broadcom’s Form 10-Q for the quarter ended August 2, 2026, filed September 10, states that dividends require board approval, may be reduced or discontinued at any time, and are not assured. It also notes that Broadcom is a holding company that depends on receiving funds from subsidiaries to pay dividends. The filing puts the uncertainty plainly: “There can be no assurance that we will continue to declare cash dividends.” Broadcom’s Form 10-Q

Broadcom is more plausible as a fit for someone who can accept volatility and wants exposure to a dividend-paying company with semiconductor and infrastructure-software businesses. It may be less suitable for an investor who depends on a predictable payment for near-term expenses, wants low technology exposure, or cannot tolerate the possibility of a dividend reduction and substantial share-price swings. Those are portfolio trade-offs, not a universal buy-or-avoid verdict.

Before comparing Broadcom with another dividend stock, evaluate the same factors for each company:
Quick Recap
Best Value
- Green-inked border design
- Large centered Eagle Symbol
- Contains space for company name, authorized stock structure, delegated shareholder, and date (see Product Description for Custom Printing reference)
- 15 individual corporate stock certificates
- 3 punched holes on top of each item for simple insertion into binders
- Yield at a dated price: Compare current yields using share prices from the same date, rather than comparing dividend amounts per share.
- Coverage and variability: Examine dividend payments alongside cash generation over multiple periods, not a single strong quarter.
- Dividend growth and its limits: Consider the history of increases, while recognizing that future increases can slow, stop, or reverse.
- Valuation and total return: A dividend is only one part of an investment’s return; the price paid and prospects for share-price performance also matter.
- Business and balance-sheet risks: Compare exposure to semiconductors, customers, suppliers, software competition, acquisitions, and debt obligations.
- Portfolio concentration: Account for other technology and AI-related holdings you already own.
- Income timing: Decide whether you need income now or can accept a lower yield in exchange for possible dividend growth and capital appreciation.
