To use ProRes RAW footage in an editor that does not support it for your workflow, open and process the camera originals in an application that can decode ProRes RAW, then export an intermediate codec the destination editor accepts. Keep the original RAW files: the exported intermediate contains rendered picture data, not a second RAW original.

Choose between native ProRes RAW support and an intermediate

First check whether the destination editor can import ProRes RAW on your operating system and whether it supports the task you need: playback, editing, grading, or rendering. Codec support can vary by application version, operating system, and rendering backend.

Adobe’s support page, updated September 30, 2026, lists Premiere Pro, Media Encoder, and After Effects as applications that import ProRes RAW. Consult Adobe’s ProRes RAW requirements for the current conditions. For Resolve, distinguish playback from export: Blackmagic says Resolve 20.2 added support for playing Apple ProRes RAW, and its 20.2.1 notes report improved compatibility. Those notes do not establish that Resolve can export ProRes RAW. Check the Resolve release notes and the Resolve supported-codecs reference for your installed version and OS; the reference separates decoding, encoding, and passthrough.

Apple’s authorized-products page also lists DaVinci Resolve, but that general listing should be read together with Blackmagic’s version-specific notes and codec tables. Apple’s ProRes RAW information

Check the ProRes RAW decoder and platform requirements

Adobe’s documented requirements illustrate why a clip may work on one system but not another. On macOS, Adobe requires the Metal renderer. Its page lists macOS Catalina 10.15 or later, and separately describes Mojave 10.14.5 or later with Apple Pro Video Formats 2.1.1 or later installed. On Windows, Adobe requires Apple’s ProRes RAW Decoder and supports decoding with CUDA or OpenCL rendering. Adobe recommends 4 GB or more of video memory for Nvidia and AMD cards; this is a system recommendation, not a guarantee of smooth performance.

Before converting, check the current documentation for the application you plan to use, including its version, operating system, GPU/render backend, and any required decoder or Pro Video Formats installation. Avoid assuming that a codec listed for one application or platform is available in another.

Pick an intermediate the destination editor accepts

Common editorial formats to investigate include ProRes 422-family codecs, ProRes 4444, and DNxHR. The right choice depends on what the receiving application can decode and on your needs for image quality, file size, bit depth, and alpha. Availability differs by application and operating system; Blackmagic’s codec reference, for example, is specific to Resolve and its documented platforms. Check the receiving editor’s own format documentation before committing to a batch export.

An intermediate is a processed render: ProRes RAW is decompressed and processed through operations such as white balance, demosaicing, color conversion, and exposure adjustment. The resulting file does not preserve the same access to RAW adjustments as the camera original. Keep the original media and project settings if you may need to revisit those choices.

Convert a short test before processing a full shoot

  1. Back up the camera originals. Work from a copy if possible, and retain the original ProRes RAW media after conversion.
  2. Confirm the source application and system. Verify that your app version, OS, GPU/render backend, decoder, and any required Apple video formats meet its current requirements.
  3. Open a representative clip. Confirm that it decodes correctly, with the expected framing and frame rate, and that needed source controls are available. Adobe identifies Exposure and ColorSpace controls in Premiere Pro, Media Encoder, and After Effects.
  4. Set the intended RAW processing and color workflow. Apple says camera-maker ProRes RAW plug-ins can provide camera-specific processing where they exist for the camera and application. Such plug-ins need the relevant metadata in the media, and camera or recorder firmware may need updating.
  5. Export a short test in the target format. Match the destination editor’s accepted codec, bit depth, resolution, frame rate, audio layout, and color space. Import the render into that editor and verify playback and color before batch conversion.
  6. Review varied shots, then batch-convert. Check highlights, shadows, mixed lighting, and footage that depends on a camera-specific look before applying the settings to the rest of the material.

Set color and HDR deliberately

Color handling is part of the conversion, not a cosmetic step to leave until later. Decide which camera look or log treatment to use, the working color space and transfer function, and whether the destination is SDR or HDR. Apple notes that delivering SDR from ProRes RAW’s HDR-capable source requires tone mapping. Inspect a short export in the destination editor, paying particular attention to highlight roll-off and shadow detail, before rendering the full set.

Apple’s May 2023 ProRes RAW white paper describes the format’s processing model and the role of custom plug-ins; its concepts are useful, but check current application and camera-plug-in documentation because support can change. Apple ProRes RAW white paper

Why older advice about Resolve needs an update

It is no longer accurate to say simply that Resolve cannot work with ProRes RAW: Blackmagic’s notes say Resolve 20.2 added playback support, with improved compatibility in 20.2.1. But playback support is not proof of ProRes RAW encoding or a complete conversion workflow on every operating system. For a particular job, verify the precise operation—decode, edit, or render—in the codec reference for your OS.

Use authorized decoding implementations

Apple warns that unauthorized implementations, including FFmpeg and derivatives, may cause decoding errors, degraded performance, incompatibility, or instability. For important footage, use a documented, authorized workflow and verify a test render rather than assuming a third-party decoder will behave like the supported applications.
