To restore a Clonezilla disk image, boot Clonezilla Live, choose device-image, select the image repository and saved image, then run restoredisk with the replacement drive as the destination. If that drive is larger and you want its extra capacity available, use Clonezilla’s documented proportional partition-table option (-k1) together with filesystem resizing (-r). Check the selected disk carefully: restoring writes image data to that disk.

Before you start

  • Have the Clonezilla image and access to its repository. The repository might be on a local disk or another location available to Clonezilla; the official restore workflow includes making the repository available with local_dev.
  • Boot Clonezilla Live and connect the replacement drive in a way supported by your computer.
  • Verify the computer’s drive requirements before buying or connecting a replacement. Interface, physical size, and usable capacity depend on the machine; Clonezilla’s documentation does not identify a universally compatible SSD model.
  • Protect important data on the destination drive. The restore operation writes to the disk you select, so do not proceed unless you have confirmed that it is the intended target.

Restore the image to the replacement drive

  1. Boot the computer from Clonezilla Live.
  2. Select device-image to work with a saved image rather than cloning directly from one disk to another.
  3. Make the image repository available. In the documented local-device workflow, choose local_dev, then select the repository location.
  4. Select the saved image you want to restore and choose restoredisk as the operation.
  5. Select the replacement drive as the destination. Read the displayed disk identification and capacity closely; choosing the wrong disk can overwrite data on it.
  6. Choose the partition-table method. For a larger destination where you want the added capacity distributed proportionally, use the proportional option described below. Otherwise, Clonezilla’s default behavior uses the partition layout from the image.
  7. Run Clonezilla’s image-integrity check before writing the image, as the project recommends.
  8. Review the operation and confirm only after checking the source image and destination disk. Allow the restore to finish before powering off or disconnecting the drive.
  9. Boot from the replacement drive, then confirm that the expected partitions are present and that the filesystem size reflects the layout you intended.

Clonezilla’s restore guide describes booting Clonezilla Live, selecting device-image and local_dev, locating the image repository, choosing restoredisk, and selecting the image and destination. The exact prompts can depend on the Clonezilla Live version and setup.

How to use a larger drive’s extra capacity

Clonezilla’s default partition-table behavior reuses the layout stored in the image. That does not itself create a proportionally expanded layout for a larger destination. For the documented larger-disk approach, Clonezilla says to use -k1 to create a proportional partition table and enable -r to resize the filesystem in the partition after restoration. These are the relevant options when you want the restored partitions and filesystem to make use of the target disk’s additional space.

The options address different parts of the job: -k1 changes how the target partition table is created; -r resizes the filesystem to fit its partition after the restore. Filesystem resizing support and the resulting partition arrangement matter, so check the outcome after the system boots. Clonezilla’s advanced restore documentation describes this option pair at The advanced parameters for restoring one image to multiple disks.

Choose the partition layout that matches your goal

Choice What it does When it fits
Default partition-table behavior Uses the partition layout from the image. When you want the restored layout to follow the source image and do not need a proportional expansion across the larger drive.
-k1 with -r -k1 creates a proportional partition table on the target; -r resizes the filesystem after restoration. When restoring to a larger drive and aiming to use the additional capacity, subject to filesystem resize support and the layout produced.

Do not use -icds for an ordinary larger-drive restore

Clonezilla normally checks that the destination is large enough and exits if it is smaller than the source disk. The -icds option skips that destination-size check; it is intended to bypass the check, not to expand a restore onto a larger drive. It is not needed for the ordinary larger-drive case. See Clonezilla’s command manual for the documented check behavior.

If the restored drive does not show the expected space

  • The new drive has unallocated capacity: Check whether the restore used the default image partition table instead of -k1, and whether filesystem resizing with -r was enabled.
  • The filesystem is smaller than its partition: Confirm that the filesystem resize step completed and inspect the result after booting. Do not assume that selecting a larger physical disk alone resized the filesystem.
  • Clonezilla stops because the destination is too small: Recheck the selected destination and its usable capacity. The default check prevents a restore when the destination is smaller than the source; -icds disables that check but does not make an undersized drive a safe target.
  • The replacement drive is not detected or will not fit: Verify the computer’s supported drive interface, physical form factor, and capacity requirements. Compatibility cannot be determined without the computer model and configuration.
