If your eSIM won’t activate on your iPhone, first check Wi-Fi, your plan and your carrier’s eSIM support. Then refresh the connection, restart the phone and check for a carrier settings update. If it still won’t work, contact your carrier: it controls the plan and activation details, and can confirm which setup method to use.
1. Check the basics before trying again
- Connect to the internet. Use reliable Wi-Fi or a hotspot during setup. Apple notes that some eSIM-only iPhones in certain regions can activate without Wi-Fi, but an internet connection is the practical first check for most setups.
- Confirm the plan and device are eligible. The plan must be active, and your carrier must support eSIM on your iPhone. Install the latest iOS version available for your model.
- Check whether the line is already listed. Open Settings and look for Cellular, Mobile Service or Mobile Data; the label varies by region and iOS version. If your number is there, the eSIM may have been added even if service is not yet working.

2. Refresh the connection and eSIM line
- Open Settings and turn Airplane Mode on. Wait a few seconds, then turn it off.
- In Settings, open Cellular, Mobile Service or Mobile Data. If the eSIM line appears, tap it and turn the line off, then back on.
- Restart your iPhone.
- After it restarts, check Control Centre to see whether your carrier appears. If the line is still missing or has no service, continue to the carrier-settings check.
3. Check for a carrier settings update
Go to Settings > General > About and wait briefly. If iOS offers a carrier settings update, accept it. The About screen may also show carrier information in the eSIM section. Carrier settings are separate from an iOS update and can affect how the iPhone connects to your provider.
4. Use the activation method your carrier issued
There is no single eSIM setup route that works with every provider. Ask your carrier which method applies to your plan; Apple describes carrier activation, transfer from another iPhone, a provider-issued QR code, a provider link or app, and manual details as possible methods. For a provider QR code, scan it from the eSIM setup flow in Settings. With iOS 17.4 or later, a QR code received in the default email app or browser may also be added by touching and holding the code. Do not reuse a code unless your carrier confirms it remains valid for the activation.
5. If you’re transferring from Android
Android-to-iPhone eSIM transfer is conditional, not universal. Apple’s current instructions describe support for iOS 26 or later on a compatible iPhone 11-series or later, Android 16 or later on a compatible Android phone, participating providers, and Wi-Fi and Bluetooth enabled on both phones. Provider availability depends on country and can change. Check Apple’s Android-to-iPhone eSIM transfer requirements; if the transfer option is absent, use the carrier’s activation process instead.

After a successful transfer, the SIM on the Android phone is deactivated. Test a call from the iPhone to confirm the new line works.
6. Identify the kind of activation error
“Activation server” or server unavailable
This refers to activating the iPhone itself, not necessarily a problem with the eSIM plan. Check Apple’s system status for iOS Device Activation, connect to reliable Wi-Fi, restart the iPhone, wait a few minutes and try again. “Incompatible SIM” or “Invalid SIM”
Contact your carrier for this message. The carrier can check whether the device and plan are eligible and whether the eSIM activation needs to be issued again.
Two lines or Dual SIM not working
Check that the iPhone is unlocked, or that both plans are from the same provider; that both plans are ready to use; and that the provider supports the Dual SIM arrangement you are trying to use. Coverage gaps, outages, billing blocks and restrictions on enterprise plans can also prevent a line from working. Apple’s checklist is at If Dual SIM with eSIM isn’t working on your iPhone.

7. When to contact your carrier—and what to have ready
If the steps above do not resolve setup, contact your network provider. Apple’s guidance is direct: “If you still can’t set up an eSIM on your iPhone, contact your network provider.” The carrier controls plan provisioning and can verify the line or refresh the correct activation method.

- The exact error message, or a description of where setup stops.
- The phone number for the line you are activating.
- Your carrier account credentials or PIN, if requested through the provider’s support process.
- Your iPhone’s IMEI or EID. Find these in Settings > General > About.
