If the files matter, stop using the device and cancel any prompt to format, initialize, or repair it. Those actions can overwrite or erase data. Recovery depends on what has failed, and software cannot fix every flash-device problem. A drive that is physically damaged, freezes, repeatedly disconnects, or reports an implausible capacity is a reason to stop DIY attempts and seek professional advice.
What to do first to protect your files
- Cancel destructive prompts. If Windows says you need to format a disk before you can use it, or another system asks to initialize or repair the device, cancel the prompt. SanDisk warns that erase and low-level format operations are destructive; its support article says, “The process is Data Destructive and cannot be undone!” (SanDisk support: Resolve External, USB Drive, and Memory Cards as Local Disk or RAW on Windows).
- Stop writes to the device. Do not save files to it, run erase or reset utilities, or use it as a destination for recovered files. Continued use and writes may complicate recovery.
- Unplug it if it is unstable or damaged. If the connector or casing is visibly damaged, or the device freezes or disconnects repeatedly, stop testing it. More connection attempts are not a safe way to diagnose an unstable device.
A connection sound, a “USB device not recognized” message, or a drive appearing as “Local Disk” does not establish that the stored memory can be read. These labels describe what the computer sees, not whether your files are accessible.
What “won’t read” can mean
Unreadability can originate at different layers: the computer’s port or connection, the way the operating system mounts the device, a partition or filesystem problem, or a fault in the device’s connector, controller, or flash memory. A “RAW” label or a format prompt may accompany a filesystem problem, but symptoms alone do not identify the cause. They also do not prove that the device is repairable.
Keep diagnosis cautious. If the device is physically intact and remains stable, a limited check in the computer’s storage-management interface may show whether the system detects it and what capacity it reports. If it is safe, you can also try a different port or another computer once. These checks can help distinguish a host-side issue from a drive-side issue, but they are not a validated diagnosis. Do not keep cycling a damaged or unstable device through ports and computers.

Choose between cautious software recovery and professional evaluation
For a stable, physically intact device, software recovery may be an option. If the files are irreplaceable, or the device is unstable or reports an implausible capacity, professional evaluation is the more prudent path. Consider these factors together; none guarantees a particular diagnosis or outcome.
| Consideration | Cautious software recovery | Professional evaluation |
|---|---|---|
| Device behavior | More suitable to consider when the device is physically intact, stays connected, and reports a plausible capacity. | Prefer stopping DIY attempts if it is damaged, freezes, repeatedly disconnects, or reports an implausible capacity. |
| File importance | A reasonable risk only if you accept that some files may not be recovered. | Consider when files are unique or irreplaceable and further experimentation is not acceptable. |
| What the proposed action does | Use a recovery tool only if it does not write recovered files back to the source device. | Ask about the evaluation and recovery process before authorizing work; assess the provider’s terms and privacy practices. |
| What it can accomplish | May recover some files in suitable cases; it cannot be assumed to resolve hardware, controller, or flash-memory failure. | A qualified provider can evaluate the device, but recovery is not guaranteed. |
How to try software recovery on a stable device
- Choose a recovery tool for the actual device and operating system. Manufacturer guidance varies by product and platform. Kingston notes that recovery software may retrieve some files while others remain lost (Kingston support: SD card technical support); SanDisk points users to self-help recovery software for lost files (SanDisk support: Resolve External, USB Drive, and Memory Cards as Local Disk or RAW on Windows).
- Follow the tool’s instructions without formatting, initializing, or resetting the source. If it requires an operation that writes to or erases the device, stop and reconsider whether the files are worth that risk.
- Save recovered files to a different storage device. Never write them back to the unreadable flash device while trying to recover its contents.
- Stop if the device becomes unstable. Freezing, repeated disconnects, or implausible capacity reporting are reasons to end the attempt rather than keep retrying.
When to stop DIY recovery and seek help
Stop experimenting and request a qualified professional evaluation if the device is physically damaged, freezes, repeatedly disconnects, or contains files you cannot afford to lose. Recovery providers may be able to assess hardware-related problems that software tools cannot address, but no result should be assumed in advance.

SanDisk says it does not itself perform data recovery and directs customers to recovery partners, while disclaiming responsibility for those partners’ services (SanDisk support: Resolve External, USB Drive, and Memory Cards as Local Disk or RAW on Windows). Evaluate a provider independently, including its terms, privacy practices, and what happens if recovery is unsuccessful.

Some manufacturer utilities are intended to restore a drive for reuse, not retrieve wanted files. Transcend describes JetFlash Online Recovery as restoring the drive to factory-default settings and advises backing up data first (Transcend support: JetFlash Online Recovery FAQ). Do not use a reset, erase, or factory-default utility as a first step while the files still matter. Recover or back up the data first—or use a repair utility only after deciding the data can be lost.
