Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFirst check whether the blur is limited to the updated game. If the PS5 home screen and other games look clear, start with that game’s graphics modes and patch information. If menus and multiple games also look blurry, check the PS5’s video output and the HDMI/display connection.
Find out whether the problem is game-specific
Look at the PS5 home screen, launch a different game, and, if useful, check a video app. If only one updated title looks blurry, that points you toward its rendering settings or update; it does not by itself prove the patch caused the change. If several sources look blurry, investigate the console output and display connection first.
Compare the game’s graphics modes
On the PS5, open Settings > Saved Data and Game/App Settings > Game Presets. Where a game supports these choices, Performance Mode prioritizes smoother motion and Resolution Mode prioritizes higher graphic quality. Try each mode in the affected game and compare the same scene.
Some titles also have their own graphics menu, with separate quality, performance, upscaling, or sharpness controls. Check those settings as well; a console preset only affects games that support the modes. Sony describes the trade-off on its PS5 Game Presets support page.

- Samsung’s 37” 4K UHD Odyssey G7 Curved Gaming Monitor provides spectacular realism.
- 37” 1000R curved display with 4K UHD resolution wraps around the field of vision for next-level gaming.
- VESA DisplayHDR 600 delivers more contrast, with deeper blacks and brighter whites for greater clarity even in dark scenes.
- 165Hz refresh rate and near-instant 1ms response time (GtG) minimizes lag for ultra-smooth gameplay.
Check the PS5’s resolution and output signal
- Open Settings > Screen and Video > Video Output.
- Review Current Video Output Signal to see what the console is sending to the display.
- Check Resolution. Automatic selects the highest resolution the connected TV supports. For 4K output, the display must support 4K; you can select 2160p in the Resolution setting.
The resolution the PS5 can send depends on both the connected display and the selected output configuration. If the signal is lower than expected, confirm the display’s capabilities and settings before changing other picture options. Sony’s resolution guide explains the console’s output settings.
Adjust HDR only if the picture looks wrong
Under Settings > Screen and Video > Video Output > HDR, compare On When Supported with Always On. On When Supported keeps non-HDR games and apps in SDR; Always On converts even non-HDR-compatible content to HDR output. You can also select Adjust HDR to calibrate brightness.

HDR changes how an image is presented, so it can affect how the picture looks, but Sony’s guidance does not identify HDR as a cause of spatial blur. Avoid treating an HDR toggle as a guaranteed fix. Sony also advises changing RGB Range only when an HDMI device is not sending RGB range information correctly. Details are in its PS5 video output guidance.
Test the HDMI and display connection
Temporarily connect the PS5 directly to the TV or monitor, bypassing a soundbar, receiver, or capture device. If the picture changes, an intermediary or its settings may be limiting the signal. Check that the display firmware is current and consult the display manual for settings needed to accept the desired resolution or refresh rate.

For a 4K 120 Hz signal, Sony specifically recommends checking that the TV supports the mode and has current firmware, using the included PS5 cable or a suitable Ultra High Speed HDMI cable, and connecting to the TV’s correct HDMI 2.1 port. Check the TV menu for an HDMI 2.1 or enhanced-signal option if applicable; on the PS5, Resolution should be Auto or 2160p and Video Transfer Rate should be Auto. These are checks for supported signal output, not proof that a cable caused blur in one game’s graphics. See Sony’s 4K resolution guide and picture and sound troubleshooting steps.
Check for game and system updates
- Highlight the game on the PS5 home screen, press the Options button, and choose Check for Update.
- To check PS5 system software, open Settings > System > System Software.
Sony’s update instructions also cover troubleshooting game and system update problems. If the blur began with a particular game patch and remains confined to that title after checking its settings, consult the game’s official support channel. Include the game title, patch version, selected graphics mode, display model, and what changed; these details help distinguish a title-specific issue from an output problem.

Use Safe Mode only as later general troubleshooting
Restarting or reinstalling a game may be reasonable if you are already troubleshooting broader update or app problems, but neither is an established cure for blur introduced by a patch. Sony documents Safe Mode cache clearing and database rebuilding for general system feature or performance issues—not as a specific fix for a blurry game image.
To enter Safe Mode, turn off the PS5, then hold its power button until you hear a second beep and connect the controller by USB. Clear System Software Cache is intended for system feature issues or performance drops. Rebuild Database scans the drive and recreates the content database. Follow Sony’s Safe Mode instructions, and do not choose a reset option as an early response to this symptom.

When to contact support
If the picture remains blurry across games or the PS5 cannot be configured to send the expected output, contact PlayStation Repairs through Sony’s picture and sound troubleshooting page. If only one game is affected, provide the title and patch details to its developer or publisher’s official support channel. No specific game, patch, display, or PS5 model is identified here, so a particular patch-related cause cannot be confirmed.
