Neither UGREEN nor Synology is the better home-server choice for everyone. Compare specific NAS models with the same bay count and intended workload, then weigh hardware, software, drive compatibility, and the full cost of the enclosure plus drives. UGREEN’s DXP4800 Plus is a useful example against Synology’s DS923+, but the performance and software comparisons on UGREEN’s product page are the manufacturer’s claims, not independent test results.

Start with the home-server job

A NAS that mainly stores files and runs backups has different needs from one that also hosts a media library, photo tools, containers, or virtual machines. Write down what you expect the server to do before comparing brands.

  • Files and backups: Prioritize the storage capacity, backup tools, user permissions, and client support you need.
  • Media: Check the exact model’s media features and whether its video outputs or other hardware connections matter to your setup.
  • Containers and virtual machines: Confirm support for the specific model and software you plan to run; brand-level support does not mean every model supports every feature.
  • Remote access: Check what remote-access method you intend to use and configure it separately from local file-sharing protocols.

Compare equivalent models, not just brands

UGREEN’s current NASync comparison covers products with different bay counts, accessories, and bundles. A two-bay NAS and a four-bay NAS are not equivalent choices: they differ in drive capacity and the storage arrangements available to the buyer. Compare models with similar bay counts and workloads, and check the current specifications and prices for your region on UGREEN’s NASync series comparison. Prices can change and vary by market.

Other useful comparison points include processor, memory, network ports, expansion options, and total system cost. Network speed also depends on the rest of the network: a faster NAS port does not by itself make transfers faster if the computer, switch, cabling, or network configuration is a bottleneck.

What UGREEN claims about the DXP4800 Plus and DS923+

UGREEN’s product page compares its DXP4800 Plus with Synology’s DS923+. UGREEN lists the DXP4800 Plus with a five-core Intel Pentium Gold 8505, built-in 10GbE and 2.5GbE networking, and 4K HDMI. The same page describes the DS923+ as using a dual-core AMD Ryzen R1600, requiring an add-in card for 10GbE, and lacking 4K HDMI. These are manufacturer-provided specifications and comparisons, not the result of independent performance testing; verify the current specifications for the exact models before buying.

UGREEN also characterizes Synology’s DSM as more mature, its first-party app ecosystem as larger, and its history with Active Backup for Business as longer. These are UGREEN’s assessments. They are relevant signals to investigate if software breadth and a long-established platform matter to you, but they should not be treated as an independent evaluation of Synology’s current lineup or software.

See UGREEN’s DXP4800 Plus product page for its model-specific comparison. Because it is a four-bay example, it should be compared with a Synology model suited to the same capacity and workload—not assumed to represent every UGREEN or Synology NAS.

UGOS Pro and DSM: compare the features you will use

UGOS Pro is UGREEN’s NAS operating system. UGREEN’s support guide describes storage-pool and RAID management, App Center, remote access, image classification, Docker applications, and virtual machines. Availability varies by model and software version: the guide applies to DH, DX, DXP, and iDX series running firmware 1.18.0.0076 or later, and documents exceptions. For example, DH-series devices do not support virtual machines, and the 4GB DH2300 does not support Docker. UGREEN’s current software page says only DXP models support Virtual Machine Manager. Check the exact model’s current feature matrix rather than relying on a general description of UGOS Pro.

UGREEN NAS DXP4800 GT 4-Bay for Creators, Tech Enthusiasts and Office Teams
  • 【High-Performance Multitasking for Speed & Endurance】Powered by AMD Ryzen Embedded R2514, 4 cores, 8 threads, and up to 3.70GHz, with 8GB DDR4 RAM expandable to 64GB, DXP4800 GT handles backups, media processing, Docker apps, and multi-user workloads smoothly. • 【UGOS Pro with Expandable Media & App Ecosystem】UGOS Pro makes NAS management simple with guided setup, a clean interface, and helpful on-screen tips. Beyond files, photos, backup, and search, it supports Docker, virtual machines, and SAN Manager, letting users expand into Plex, Emby, Jellyfin, Home Assistant, web hosting, and other self-hosted workflows—all managed through the UGREEN NAS app across phone, tablet, computer, and TV.
  • 【Surveillance Center Built-In】Connect compatible IP cameras to DXP4800 GT and turn your NAS into both the storage drive and control center for home or small-business security. UGREEN Surveillance Center only supports ONVIF/RTSP cameras, live multi-view, PTZ control, event detection, recording, and timeline playback from one NAS-based platform. Footage stays stored locally, so you can review, manage, and share access without separate camera apps or cloud subscriptions.
  • 【USB & SD Instant Backup】Built-in SD card slot lets creators import photos and videos without an external card reader. Simply insert an SD card into the NAS, open the UGREEN NAS app, and copy or back up files to your selected folder in just a few clicks. Combined with USB-A 10Gbps, USB-C 10Gbps, USB 2.0, and 4K HDMI connectivity, DXP4800 GT helps you quickly transfer camera footage, media assets, or surveillance files—saving time and simplifying your workflow without relying on a computer.
  • 【Local Privacy, Pro-Grade Security】Store files locally on DXP4800 GT instead of third-party cloud servers, with local account mode for LAN-only access when needed. TLS/SSL, RSA, AES, and SHA-512 help secure logins and data transfers, while Security Manager, and flexible permissions provide continuous protection. RAID support adds data redundancy to help reduce the risk of data loss and improve file recovery in the event of drive failure.

UGREEN documents SMB, NFS, WebDAV, FTP, and SFTP support. The services must be enabled and folder permissions granted. Having a protocol available does not, by itself, make a NAS accessible from outside the home; remote access requires its own configuration and security decisions.

UGREEN’s UGOS Pro system guide and software and app information describe its platform. Synology uses DSM, but the materials cited here do not provide a current, independent feature-by-feature DSM comparison. If particular first-party apps, backup workflows, or management tools are essential, verify their support on the exact NAS models you are considering.

Include drives and compatibility in the price

The DXP4800 Plus is sold diskless, so its enclosure price is only part of the cost. Add the drives needed for your planned capacity, plus any networking or power accessories your setup requires. UGREEN directs buyers to its HDD/SSD compatibility list; check the exact drive and enclosure pairing before purchase. UGREEN also lists UPS products and bundles, but a UPS is optional and should be matched to the NAS and the equipment it needs to keep running.

Decide how much usable storage and redundancy you need before choosing drives or a RAID arrangement. Drive count, drive capacity, and the selected RAID mode affect usable space and fault tolerance. Neither the enclosure’s price nor the total drive capacity alone tells you how much storage will remain available after the chosen arrangement.

A practical decision checklist

  1. List your workloads. Separate must-haves—such as file storage, backups, media, containers, or virtual machines—from nice-to-haves.
  2. Set capacity and bay-count needs. Estimate current storage and likely growth, then compare models with a suitable number of bays.
  3. Check model-level software support. Confirm that the NAS supports the exact apps and features you need, including any model-specific limits.
  4. Check the network fit. Match the NAS ports to the computers, switches, cabling, and internet-access setup you actually have.
  5. Verify drive compatibility and total cost. Include compatible drives and any optional accessories, and compare the completed systems rather than diskless enclosure prices alone.
  6. Verify current product details. Recheck regional availability, specifications, firmware requirements, and prices before ordering.

Which should you choose?

Choose by the specific model and the software experience you value, not by brand name alone. The DXP4800 Plus is worth considering if its stated hardware and connections suit your workload and you are comfortable checking UGOS Pro’s model-specific app support. Synology is worth comparing closely if DSM’s software maturity and first-party app ecosystem are important to you; those strengths are characterized by UGREEN, so verify the apps and workflows you need directly. In either case, a fair decision depends on comparable models, compatible drives, and the complete system cost.
