The safest way to install an Android app is through Google Play. If you have a legitimate reason to install an APK from elsewhere, verify the developer and download source, keep Google Play Protect enabled, heed Android’s warnings, and review the app’s permissions after installation. None of these checks guarantees an app is harmless; if you cannot verify it or its warnings do not make sense, do not install it.
Prefer Google Play or a verifiable developer source
Use Google Play when the app is available there. Google warns that downloading apps from unknown sources can put your device and personal information at risk: Google’s Android app-download guidance.
If the app is legitimately available only as an APK, obtain it from the developer’s official site or another source you can independently authenticate. Check that the site really belongs to the developer, that the app is the one you intended to download, and that the download has not redirected you to an unrelated installer. A familiar app name or an APK file by itself is not evidence of authenticity. If the developer publishes a checksum or signature-verification instructions, follow those instructions; there is no single universal consumer check established here for verifying every APK.
Read the install prompt before allowing the APK
Android’s interface and menu labels vary by device and software version. If you choose to proceed, follow the on-screen prompt for the file source. A request to allow a browser or file manager to install unknown apps changes what that app is permitted to do, so grant only the access needed for the install and turn it off afterward if your device provides that control.

Do not treat warnings about an unverified app or developer as routine prompts to dismiss. Google’s Android guidance recommends installing apps from verified developers: Google’s instructions for installs from unverified developers. If Android or Play Protect recommends a scan or blocks the install, pause and verify the source rather than working around the warning.
Keep Google Play Protect on and heed its result
Google says Play Protect checks apps and devices for harmful behavior. It checks apps from Google Play before download and scans the device for potentially harmful apps from other sources; it may warn about, deactivate, or remove an app. Keep “Scan apps with Play Protect” enabled. Google also says it may block an unverified app that uses sensitive permissions commonly targeted in financial-fraud scams. See Google Play Protect’s scanning and safety guidance.

Play Protect is a screening layer, not a guarantee that an app is safe. On some Android versions it may reset permissions for apps to protect privacy, including apps that are rarely used. If you see a warning, do not turn Play Protect off as a routine installation workaround.
Check the app’s permissions in Android Settings
After installation, open the app’s information or permissions controls in Settings. The exact path and labels differ by manufacturer and Android version, so use Settings search for the app name or “permissions” if needed.

Review access such as location, camera, microphone, contacts, photos and files, SMS, phone, or notifications where those controls are available. For each permission, ask whether it is needed for the app’s core function. Deny optional access without a clear purpose. If the app’s behavior or requested access does not match what the developer represented, remove it. A permissions review is a privacy check, not proof that the app is harmless.
Account for Android developer verification changes
Google’s 2026 guidance says developer verification starts in September 2026 for apps downloaded from participating stores on certified Android devices in Brazil, Indonesia, Singapore, and Thailand. The listed stores are Google Play, HONOR App Market, OPPO App Market, Samsung Galaxy Store, Palm Store, V-Appstore, and Xiaomi GetApps. The guidance covers certified Android 8+ devices; AOSP and non-certified devices are exempt. Google plans a global rollout across all install sources in 2027; that is a stated plan, not a completed rollout. Details are in Google’s Android developer-verification overview.

In the covered flow, allowing installs from unverified developers uses a one-time advanced procedure with a 24-hour security delay. Do not mistake that safeguard for an ordinary permission prompt or try to bypass it. See Google’s instructions for allowing app installs from unverified developers.

- Keep Android security updates current.
- Use app updates from the same trusted source you used to obtain the app, or from Google Play when available.
- If you cannot verify the developer, the source, or the meaning of a warning, do not install the APK.
Device certification and Play Protect are separate concepts: Google says certified devices have passed Android compatibility testing. Certification alone does not verify a particular APK.
