For fast-moving adventure photography, start with continuous autofocus and choose a shutter speed for the look you want: fast to freeze action, or slower to show motion. Use a focus area that suits the subject and background, shoot short bursts around likely peak moments, then balance aperture and ISO to maintain your chosen shutter speed. Treat every number as a starting point: movement, distance, direction, light and camera behavior all matter.
Choose whether to freeze the action or show motion
Shutter speed controls how movement appears in the frame. A fast exposure reduces subject blur; a slower one can record blur intentionally. The right speed depends on how quickly the subject moves, how far away it is and the visual effect you want.
For a sharp, frozen moment
Nikon Professional Services lists 1/500 second or faster among its sports settings for the Z 7II and Z 6II. That is a manufacturer starting point for those cameras and that context, not a guarantee for every adventure subject. Faster or closer movement may need a faster shutter speed. Review a test frame at magnification and adjust if the subject is blurred.
For motion blur or a panning image
Sony’s action guidance gives 1/50 to 1/100 second as examples of slower shutter speeds for creating blur. These are examples, not universal settings. For panning, follow the subject smoothly through the exposure so it remains relatively defined while the background blurs. Fujifilm’s moving-subject guide discusses panning as a way to convey dynamism; expect to adjust the speed to the subject’s movement, distance and direction.

Set autofocus and focus area for the subject’s path
Keep focus updating
Use continuous autofocus for a subject moving toward, away from or across the frame. Depending on the camera, it may be labeled AF-C, Continuous AF or Servo AF. Nikon describes Continuous AF as adjusting focus while the shutter button is half-pressed or AF-ON is held. Menu names and behavior vary by model. Sony cautions that AF-A may not switch quickly enough for fast action in some situations.
Match the focus area to the scene
A wider or dynamic focus area can help when an erratic subject briefly leaves the selected point. A smaller, more controlled point can be useful when the camera might otherwise focus on an obstacle in front of the subject. Nikon gives volleyball nets and swimming splashes as examples where single-point AF may help avoid distractions. Choose the area based on the subject’s path and what lies between it and the camera.

Balance shutter speed, aperture and ISO
Aperture, shutter speed and ISO work together. A wider aperture admits more light, giving the camera more room to use a fast shutter. If the lens is already wide open and the scene is still too dim, raising ISO can help preserve that shutter speed, though it can affect image quality.
Sony recommends increasing ISO when needed and suggests an f/2.8-or-faster lens for distant, low-light shooting. That advice applies to the context described by Sony; it is not a requirement for every action photographer. Whether a wide-aperture lens makes sense depends on the camera mount, focal length, distance, weight, weather sealing and budget.

Choose an exposure mode that protects your shutter speed
Shutter-priority mode can be useful when keeping a minimum speed is the main concern. Manual exposure with Auto ISO is another option on cameras that support it, particularly when light changes but you want to hold shutter speed and aperture steady. Check exposure when moving between shade and sun, and watch that automatic exposure does not slow the shutter below what the action requires.
Use burst shooting around the decisive moment
Continuous shooting can capture several frames around a jump, turn, splash or landing. Nikon recommends Continuous H or Continuous H (extended) for the Z 7II and Z 6II sports guidance. Burst rate alone does not tell you how long a sequence can continue: buffer capacity, file format, card support and camera performance affect sustained shooting.

Digital Camera World’s 2026 buying guide notes that RAW files take more space than JPEGs, which can reduce the number of frames before the buffer fills. For a specific camera’s limits, consult its manual and use a memory card whose format and speed are supported by that model.
Anticipate and shoot short bursts
Rather than holding the shutter through an entire event, aim short bursts at moments you expect to matter. This makes the sequence easier to manage and may help avoid filling the buffer before another key moment. There is no universal burst length: it depends on the camera and the action.

Use published settings as examples, not recipes
Sports photographer Lukas Schulze, in a Nikon UK profile on work with the Z 9 and Z 8, says: “I choose all my settings manually and photograph in RAW.” The profile reports that he prefers a fast shutter speed of at least 1/2000 second and an aperture as open as possible for his outdoor sports work. These are his stated working choices, not rules for every photographer or scene.
The published examples serve different purposes: Nikon’s 1/500 second or faster is a sports starting point for the Z 7II and Z 6II; Sony’s 1/50 to 1/100 second examples are for blur; Schulze’s at-least-1/2000-second preference is an attributed personal approach. Choose based on your subject and intended result rather than treating the figures as interchangeable.

A practical setup sequence in the field

- Review and refine: Check whether the subject is sharp, whether the exposure is acceptable and whether the blur matches your intent; adjust before the next opportunity.
