Running shoes should leave about a thumb’s width of space in front of your longest toe, let your toes spread without pressure, and hold your heel and midfoot securely without pinching. Treat the thumb-width advice as a visual rule of thumb, not an exact measurement: the right fit depends on the shoe’s shape and how it feels on your foot.

How to check running-shoe fit

Try on both shoes while standing, using the socks you plan to run in. Fit the larger foot, and bring any orthotics you use. Check each part of the fit separately: extra length will not necessarily solve a shoe that is too narrow, and a roomy forefoot does not guarantee a secure heel.

Leave room at the longest toe

Look for about a thumb’s width between your longest toe—which may not be your big toe—and the front of the shoe. Your toes should be able to move rather than being pushed together or forced to curl. REI and ASICS both give thumb-width guidance; the University of Florida authors Kevin R. Vincent and Heather K. Vincent use a thumbnail-width recommendation in their clinical handout, “Seven Tips to Effective Running Shoe Sizing.” These are approximate fitting cues, not a promise of a particular gap in millimeters.

Check width and toe-box shape on their own

Your forefoot should not feel squeezed, and your toes should have room to spread. Look for pressure, pinching, or an upper that visibly bulges or stretches over the foot. If your foot extends beyond the removable sockliner, reassess the shoe’s width or shape.

A tight forefoot does not automatically mean you need a longer shoe. ASICS New Zealand notes, “Sometimes when a shoe feels too tight, it is not a bigger size that’s needed, but a wider fit.” Width-letter conventions vary by market and brand. For example, ASICS’s New Zealand guide lists women’s B as standard, D as wide and 2E as wider; for men, it lists D as standard, 2E as wide and 4E as widest. Check the chart for the specific brand and model rather than treating those labels as universal. See ASICS New Zealand’s width guide.

Make sure the heel and midfoot stay secure

The heel and midfoot should feel snug and secure, with no painful pressure and no slipping as you walk. A shoe can have enough toe room and still be a poor fit if the heel moves around. If you size up to relieve forefoot tightness, the heel may become less secure; University of Florida guidance also cautions that a wider shoe can widen the heel and allow slippage.

If your heel slips or blisters, try a runner’s loop, also called heel-lock lacing. If that does not help, consider whether the shoe’s heel-cup shape suits your foot. REI discusses both adjustments in its running-shoe fitting advice.

Make the try-on realistic

  1. Try both shoes. Feet can differ in size, so choose a fit that works for the larger foot.
  2. Wear your running socks and bring orthotics. These affect the space available inside the shoe.
  3. Try shoes later in the day or after activity. Feet may be larger then than they are first thing in the morning.
  4. Walk or jog briefly if you can. Check the seller’s return terms before wearing the shoes outdoors. REI suggests checking the fit at home and then doing one or two trial runs where permitted by the applicable return policy.

Recheck every brand and model

A size printed on the box is a starting point, not a guarantee. Brands and models can fit differently, and fit may change when a shoe model is updated. Brooks advises runners to account for differences between brands and models; the University of Florida handout likewise notes that sizing can differ after a model change. Nike Austria’s statement that Nike shoes aim to fit true to size applies to Nike’s own models, not to comparisons between brands. Try on each shoe rather than assuming your everyday size—or the size that worked in another running shoe—will fit.

What common fit problems can signal

Symptoms are clues to reassess a shoe’s fit, not proof of a single cause. Persistent pain or numbness is not something a fit guide can diagnose.

  • EVA sockliner provides soft, step-in comfort

  • Bruised toes or blisters at or between toes: Recheck the length and toe-box volume; the shoe may be too short or too tight.
  • Tingling or numbness: REI says this can point to insufficient shoe volume, excessive shortness or narrowness. Do not ignore persistent symptoms.
  • Blisters at the ball of the foot: REI flags these as a possible sign that the shoe is too wide.
  • Heel blisters or slipping: Try heel-lock lacing, then consider whether the heel cup matches your foot.

How to compare shoes when the fit is close

When choosing between shoes, compare the features that affect your fit and intended use rather than relying on a size label alone:

  • Room at your longest toe and the shape of the toe box.
  • Forefoot width, including pressure or pinching across the upper.
  • Heel shape and how securely it holds your heel.
  • Comfort with the socks and orthotics you plan to use.
  • Whether the shoe suits your intended surface and use, such as road, track or trail running, training or racing.

No universally best model follows from these fit checks. REI puts it plainly: “Proper fit should always be the determining factor in running shoe choice.” If you remain unsure or have unusual fit issues, a specialty running store may be able to help you assess the shoe on your foot.
