If the Sony FX5 is unavailable where you need to shoot, start by checking local stock and rental availability for the Sony FX3. It is the clearest same-brand compact full-frame alternative in the available specifications, but it does not give you the FX5’s documented open-gate capture or internal 16-bit X-OCN RAW. Canon EOS C80, Blackmagic PYXIS, and RED KOMODO-X are other systems worth checking against your workflow; none should be treated as a drop-in replacement without verifying configuration, accessories, and regional availability.

First, check what “available now” means in your market

A camera announced for release is not necessarily in stock, deliverable, or rentable in your location. Sony announced FX5 release from August 2026, but that timing and its launch pricing do not establish current local supply. Check a dealer or rental house directly for the exact body or kit, delivery or pickup date, and included accessories before choosing around a deadline.

  • Confirm whether the camera is physically in stock or merely available for preorder.
  • For a rental, verify pickup and return dates, included media or accessories, and whether the configuration supports your recording plan.
  • Check the actual regional price and availability of any handle, viewfinder, media, or rigging components you need.

Sony’s FX5 announcement listed body-only launch prices of €5,400 / £4,700 and an XLR-handle bundle at €6,000 / £5,200, with a caution that pricing varies by country and region. These are announcement figures, not confirmed current prices. Sony’s FX5 launch announcement gives the regional context.

What you would be replacing in the FX5

Sony announced the FX5 on July 22, 2026 as a compact full-frame Cinema Line camera with a newly developed fully stacked CMOS sensor. Sony claims 15+ stops of dynamic range in S-Log3 and lists three base ISO settings: 800, 4000, and 12800. These are manufacturer specifications and claims, not independent comparative test results. Its announced recording rates are 5K up to 60 fps, 4K up to 120 fps, and FHD up to 240 fps. Sony says open-gate capture is available only when recording in X-OCN. Sony’s announcement describes those launch features.

  • Uninterrupted 4K 60p recording with inbody cooling fan

The FX5’s internal 16-bit scene-linear X-OCN RAW and open-gate recording may be decisive if your workflow depends on them. Keep the launch specification separate from Sony’s roadmap: the company says firmware version 2.0, expected August 2027 or later, is planned to add X-OCN high-frame-rate shooting up to 240 fps and additional open-gate XAVC S-I and vertical-shooting features. Those are planned additions, not features to assume are currently delivered. Sony’s FX5 specifications page also carries the later-firmware note.

Which alternatives are worth checking first?

Sony FX3: the closest cited same-system candidate

If you want a compact full-frame Sony and can work without the FX5’s documented open-gate capture and internal X-OCN, check whether a Sony FX3 camera body is available locally. Sony’s FX3 specifications list 4K recording up to 120p, 15+ stops of S-Log3 latitude, five-axis stabilization, and CFexpress Type A/SD media. The cited FX3 specifications do not establish FX5-style open-gate recording or internal X-OCN, so do not assume those workflows carry over.

Canon EOS C80: investigate if a system change is acceptable

The Canon EOS C80 is a manufacturer-listed cinema-camera system to consider if you are open to moving away from Sony. The available product information does not support a matched head-to-head verdict against the FX5. Before treating it as a fit, verify the mount and lens plan, media, audio, ND, autofocus needs, and current supply in your region. Canon’s EOS C80 product page is the starting point for its official product information.

Blackmagic PYXIS: assess the whole rig, not just the body

Blackmagic PYXIS is a modular camera system. Determine whether your production can accommodate the chosen body configuration, lens mount, media, monitoring, and post-production workflow; a box-style camera body should not be presumed to replace an FX5 without additional rigging. Consult Blackmagic’s PYXIS technical specifications for the manufacturer’s configuration details.

RED KOMODO-X: compare the intended package and workflow

RED KOMODO-X is another cinema-camera option, but its suitability depends on the current configuration, required accessories, and the production’s workflow. Check those details against your actual shoot rather than assuming the camera alone is an equivalent kit. See RED’s KOMODO-X product page.

  • RAW and framing: Decide whether you need internal RAW or open-gate capture, or whether your delivery format and post workflow can work without them.
  • Lens investment: Check the mount and whether your existing lenses can be used as-is or require an adapter. Do not infer compatibility merely from the camera brand.
  • Camera movement and focus: Compare your need for autofocus and stabilization with the operating style of the chosen system.
  • On-set essentials: Account for audio inputs, ND filtration, monitoring or viewfinding, power, media, and rigging—not just the camera body.
  • Total system cost: Price the configuration you can actually shoot with, including any required accessories and media.
  • Access: Check local purchase stock and rental access for the complete configuration, not only the camera name.

Account for the FX5 accessories separately

Sony describes the optional XLR-H2 handle as providing two XLR/TRS combo inputs, up to four-channel audio input, and in-camera recording up to 96 kHz/32-bit float. The optional DVF-EL1 OLED viewfinder is also part of Sony’s announced accessory offering. Sony listed launch-announcement prices of €900 for the XLR-H2 and €750 for the DVF-EL1; these are regional announcement prices, not verified current local prices. Check compatibility and availability for the body and accessories as a package before comparing system costs. Sony’s announcement identifies the accessories and their listed launch prices.
