Brooks GuideRails is a structured-support feature built into certain running shoes. Firmer pieces around the heel are designed to check excess inward or outward movement while allowing a runner’s natural motion. Brooks positions it for people whose running movement deviates from their personal baseline; whether it suits you depends on how the shoe feels, not just your foot shape or a gait label.
What Brooks GuideRails does
GuideRails consists of shoe components around the heel, not external bars. The piece on the medial, or inside, side is intended to limit inward rolling; the firmer, higher piece on the lateral, or outside, side is intended to limit outward heel shift. Brooks describes the purpose as checking excess movement while letting the runner follow their natural motion path. That is the manufacturer’s design explanation, not proof of a health outcome. Brooks’ GuideRails overview and its support-category guidance explain the feature.
Brooks calls this approach “structured support” and distinguishes it from arch support. The company says performance running shoes typically do not have active arch shaping; runners seeking personalized arch support can consider a removable orthotic or insert. A shoe’s support category and its arch shape are therefore separate considerations.
What GTS means—and how to spot GuideRails shoes
GTS stands for GuideRails Technology System. Brooks uses GTS in the model name to identify shoes with GuideRails, so it is a useful label to look for when comparing models. Do not confuse GTS with GTX: GTX refers to GORE-TEX waterproof technology, not GuideRails. Brooks explains the distinction in its GTS-versus-GTX guide.

Brooks’ model examples vary across its pages, and availability can change. Its current support-category page names Glycerin GTS, Adrenaline GTS, and Ariel/Beast GTS among structured-support options. An older GuideRails article also lists Launch GTS and Levitate GTS; treat those as examples from that article, not as a confirmed current lineup. Check Brooks’ current listings before choosing a specific model.
Who might consider a GTS shoe?
A GTS shoe may be worth trying if you prefer a structured-support feel or your running motion departs from your usual baseline. Brooks recommends neutral shoes for runners whose motion is in line with their baseline, and suggests using its runner-support service for personalized category guidance.

That positioning is not a diagnosis. Flat feet, overpronation, a particular pain, or one gait observation by itself does not establish that GuideRails is the right choice. Compare the fit and feel of a GTS shoe with a neutral Brooks shoe, paying attention to comfort, cushioning, ride, and whether the shoe matches your running or walking use. Brooks groups its shoes into flexible, balanced, structured, and max-support categories; it does not establish one category as best for everyone.

Evidence on broad footwear categories such as stability and motion-control shoes is not the same as evidence on Brooks GuideRails specifically. A 2022 Cochrane review included 12 studies and 11,240 participants across its comparisons. It judged the evidence very uncertain on whether stability or motion-control shoes reduce lower-limb running injuries compared with neutral or cushioned shoes. The review also noted variation in injury definitions and shoe classifications. Cochrane’s review summary covers its findings; its search ended in June 2021.

A 2021 randomized trial followed 372 recreational runners for six months. In a secondary analysis, researchers recorded 25 pronation-related injuries and 68 other running-related injuries. Motion-control shoes, compared with standard neutral shoes, were associated with a lower hazard of pronation-related injury (hazard ratio 0.41; 95% confidence interval 0.17–0.98), but not other running-related injury (hazard ratio 0.68; 95% confidence interval 0.41–1.10). The study examined motion-control footwear generally, not Brooks GuideRails, and its results do not establish what every runner should wear. The study is indexed at PubMed.
These findings do not show that GuideRails prevents injury, cures pain, corrects gait, or is necessary for people who pronate. Brooks explains what the feature is intended to do, but the evidence cited here does not establish a GuideRails-specific clinical benefit.

How to choose between GTS and neutral shoes
- Decide what feel you want. Consider whether you want Brooks’ structured-support approach or would rather start with a neutral shoe.
- Compare shoes on the factors you can assess. Check fit, comfort, cushioning, ride feel, and whether the shoe is suited to your intended running or walking use.
- Use Brooks’ category guidance if you are unsure. Its runner-support service can help with support-category questions; a category label is not a substitute for an individual fit assessment.
- Check the model listing. Look for GTS in the name and confirm the shoe’s current availability and details on Brooks’ site.
