Track automated ecommerce email performance from send to sale: delivery, clicks, store sessions, orders, attributed revenue, revenue per recipient, and negative engagement such as unsubscribes and spam complaints. Treat opens as a limited diagnostic signal, not proof of attention or success. For every comparison, record the metric’s denominator, attribution window, and attribution model.
Build a scorecard for each automation
Review each flow or message as a funnel. The stages help identify where performance changes: whether messages reach recipients, prompt a visit, and lead to an order. Track counts as well as rates so that a percentage is not separated from the audience size behind it.
| Stage | Metrics to record | What they help diagnose |
|---|---|---|
| Volume and delivery | Reach or sends, delivered, bounces, delivery rate, bounce rate | How many messages entered the funnel and whether delivery is a constraint. Keep attempted, sent, delivered, and bounced counts distinct when available. |
| Engagement | Clicks or click rate, store sessions | Whether recipients acted on the message and whether that activity is reflected as a store visit. |
| Business outcome | Orders, order conversion rate, attributed sales, revenue per recipient | Whether the automation is associated with purchases and monetary value. |
| Negative engagement | Unsubscribe rate, spam complaint rate | Whether targeting, message relevance, or cadence may be producing unwanted mail. |
Shopify’s automation reporting includes reach, sessions, orders, conversion rate, and sales; its email reporting also includes click, delivery, bounce, unsubscribe, and spam metrics. The exact metrics available depend on the platform and report. Shopify automation reporting and Shopify email analytics document these measures.
Read each metric in the context of its denominator
Reach, sends, delivery, and bounces
Reach or sends describe the volume entering measurement; they are not necessarily the same as delivered messages. Delivery rate and bounce rate help show whether recipients could receive the email. Look at their trend across comparable sends rather than treating one isolated send as a verdict on list quality or sender reputation.

Clicks and sessions
Click rate is commonly expressed as a share of delivered recipients, but check whether a report counts unique people who clicked or total clicks. Shopify defines click rate by delivered recipients who clicked a message link. Sessions add an on-site step, but tracking setup and attribution rules can affect whether a visit is credited to an email. Shopify’s metric definitions and Klaviyo flow analytics are useful references.
Orders and conversion rate
A conversion rate is meaningful only with its denominator and time window. Klaviyo defines placed order rate as orders recorded within the channel attribution window divided by unique recipients. Shopify reports attributed orders and automation conversion rate. Do not assume identically named metrics from different services use the same calculation; record the platform’s definition alongside the result. See Klaviyo campaign analytics and Shopify automation reporting.

Attributed sales, revenue per recipient, and average order value
Attributed sales show the revenue a reporting system associates with messages under its rules; revenue per recipient normalizes attributed revenue by the recipient count and timeframe used in that report. Shopify’s sales figures can reflect adjustments for discounts and reversals and include applicable taxes, duties, and shipping according to the specific report. Klaviyo’s revenue-per-recipient definition uses attributed revenue divided by recipients over the same timeframe. Reconcile definitions before comparing revenue figures across platforms.
Average order value can help explain a change in basket size or order mix, but it does not replace order conversion or revenue per recipient. Shopify includes average order value in email order reporting. Shopify email analytics and Klaviyo campaign analytics describe their reporting measures.

Use opens cautiously
Open rate is not a dependable standalone measure of human attention. Email opens are often inferred from a tracking pixel: previews or security tools can load it without a person reading the message, while image blocking can prevent it from loading. Apple Mail Privacy Protection can prefetch tracking pixels and inflate reported opens. Use opens as a diagnostic signal, interpreted alongside clicks and outcomes, rather than as evidence that an email caused engagement or sales. Shopify calls email conversion-funnel metrics estimates; see Shopify email analytics and Klaviyo’s email metrics reference.
Interpret revenue attribution, not just the revenue number
Different reporting systems can credit orders differently. Shopify’s orders report uses last non-direct click by default. Shopify also explains that its store-data conversion tracking and third-party click-based tracking can produce different results: “Because third-party analytics platforms track conversions using link clicks and Shopify Messaging uses direct store data, the analytics between both services might not match.” Shopify’s explanation of email analytics sets out this distinction.

Use UTMs where they help your analytics setup, but document which report is the reference and how it attributes conversions. Platform-attributed revenue is not, by itself, proof of incremental revenue caused by an automation; establishing lift requires a holdout or another causal design.

Compare flows with the same purpose, audience type, period, and attribution method. A welcome series, abandoned-cart message, post-purchase email, and replenishment reminder serve different situations, so a single target rate across all four can mislead. Inspect both counts and rates, and state the platform, date range, denominator, and attribution window when sharing benchmark comparisons.

- Weak delivery: investigate delivery and bounce trends before interpreting downstream engagement.
- Delivery is steady but clicks are weak: examine whether the message and its call to action suit the audience and flow purpose.
- Clicks are strong but sessions or orders are weak: check tracking and the click-to-site experience, then verify the order window and attribution rules.
- Sales appear strong but unsubscribes or complaints rise: review audience expectations, signup source, and message cadence alongside revenue.
Use benchmarks as context, not universal targets
Klaviyo’s guide reports overall averages from its Q3 2023 platform data, including Apple Mail Privacy Protection opens: campaign open rate 43.33% and click rate 1.44%; flow open rate 55.21% and click rate 5.37%. These are historical vendor aggregates, not current 2026 results or universal targets for every ecommerce store. The same guide’s healthy-range labels—bounce below 1%, unsubscribe below 0.3%, and spam complaint below 0.01%—are Klaviyo guidance, not cross-industry standards. Use them as troubleshooting context and compare your own like-for-like flows over time. Klaviyo’s deliverability guide.
No single open, click, or order rate is established as ideal for every store and automation. A useful scorecard preserves the measurement definitions and compares comparable cohorts, rather than rewarding a headline percentage detached from its context.
