There is no single best DJI Osmo Action 6 preset for every scene. Start with the widest aperture available and a lower frame rate for dim, relatively still scenes; raise the frame rate for fast motion when there is enough light; and choose Standard color for quick sharing or D-Log M when you plan to grade. Treat these as starting points: the camera’s available combinations vary by mode and aspect ratio, and the result depends on the light and movement in your shot.

Why settings change from scene to scene

The Osmo Action 6 combines a 1/1.1-inch sensor with a variable f/2.0–f/4.0 aperture. Those specifications give you options, but they do not make every combination equally suitable for dim scenes, fast movement, and simple sharing. DJI lists common video frame rates from 24 to 60 fps, with selected high-frame-rate modes reaching 100/120 fps in 4K and 200/240 fps in 1080p. The exact choices depend on recording mode and aspect ratio. DJI’s specifications list the supported combinations and constraints.

A useful starting point is to decide what matters most in the shot: retaining detail in low light, rendering motion smoothly or enabling slow motion, keeping the horizon level, or minimizing editing. Then select a compatible resolution, frame rate, stabilization mode, and color profile on the camera.

What settings should I use at night or in low light?

Start with light gathering, not maximum frame rate

Use the widest aperture available for the selected mode. DJI describes the camera’s low-light aperture behavior as “Maximizes aperture in low light,” and the lens opens to f/2.0 at its widest. When the scene has little movement, try 24, 25, or 30 fps before 60 fps. That lower-frame-rate suggestion is a practical starting point, not a universal DJI preset: a reviewer observed more noise and softer detail in 4K/60fps than 4K/30fps in the reviewer’s low-light conditions. Your results can differ with the scene and settings.

Try SuperNight, but inspect the result

SuperNight is the Action 6’s model-specific option for dim scenes. DJI lists it for 4K, 2.7K, and 1080p at frame rates from 24 through 60 fps. It does not guarantee clean night footage; faster motion and higher frame rates can still come with a noise or detail trade-off. Compare a short clip with the motion in your scene rather than assuming 60 fps is best because it is available.

Adjust exposure manually when automatic exposure is not giving you the look you need

  1. On the camera view, tap the Image/Audio Settings icon.
  2. Enable PRO mode.
  3. Set Exposure to M (Manual) to adjust shutter speed and ISO.
  4. Make small changes, then review both the motion rendering and visible noise in the recorded clip.

DJI’s Osmo Action 6 FAQ documents this control path. The camera’s listed video ISO range is 100–51,200, but ISO 51,200 is available only in SuperNight; other video modes have a maximum ISO of 25,600. In 8K, the maximum ISO is 12,800 in Normal color or 6,400 in D-Log M. These are mode limits, not targets: a higher ISO may make a dim image brighter while also making noise more apparent.

DJI also publishes general Osmo Action series low-light guidance. Because that guidance is for the series, do not treat its manual-exposure numbers as a verified Action 6 preset for every mode. If electronic stabilization is not needed for a particular shot, DJI’s general guidance suggests testing with EIS disabled; decide based on how steady the shot needs to look.

Which settings work for fast motion?

Raise the frame rate when you need smoother-looking motion or want flexibility to slow the footage down, provided the scene is bright enough. The camera supports common 4K options through 60 fps, with selected 4K modes at 100/120 fps; selected 1080p modes extend to 200/240 fps. These higher rates are not available in every aspect ratio or mode, so check the camera’s choices after setting your intended format.

In bright conditions, a higher frame rate can be a useful trade for action. In dim light, it can make noise more visible or detail look softer; the cited reviewer’s 4K comparison illustrates that possibility, not a guaranteed result for every camera or scene. If a clip looks noisy or lacks detail, try a lower frame rate before increasing ISO further.

How should I choose stabilization?

For handheld movement, choose a stabilization mode that suits how much camera shake you need to reduce. DJI documents RockSteady, RockSteady+, and horizon-correction options. Use horizon leveling when a level horizon matters more than retaining the widest field of view or every recording option. Some stabilization and recording-mode combinations are restricted, so verify the choices shown on the camera for your selected resolution, frame rate, and aspect ratio. The Osmo Action 6 user manual describes the available modes and operation.

Stabilization is a framing and steadiness choice, not a promise of better low-light image quality. For a supported shot where you can keep the camera steady, compare a short clip with stabilization off against one with it on and use the result that fits the movement you want to show.

Should I use Standard color or D-Log M?

Choose Standard for quick sharing

Standard color is the straightforward choice when you want footage that is ready to share with little or no color editing. It avoids adding a grading step to an everyday recording workflow.

Choose D-Log M when you intend to grade

DJI describes D-Log M as a profile that distributes color more evenly to preserve fidelity in bright and dark portions of the image, and as designed for professional color grading. Choose it when your editing workflow supports grading and you want that flexibility. Log footage is not automatically better-looking without editing, so it is usually less convenient for a clip you want to share as recorded. See DJI’s FAQ for its explanation of D-Log M.

When do aperture choices matter?

The Action 6’s Auto aperture setting offers five ranges, from f/2.0–f/4.0 through f/2.8–f/4.0; DJI identifies f/2.0–f/4.0 as the default. For dim scenes, the widest available aperture is a sensible starting point. DJI also describes Starburst at f/4.0 for bright urban night scenes, where it is a creative effect rather than a general low-light setting. Some aperture options may not be available in SuperNight. The official product information describes these aperture modes.

A quick decision guide

What matters most Starting choice Trade-off to check
Dim scene, little movement Widest available aperture; try 24, 25, or 30 fps; consider SuperNight Check noise and detail in a recorded clip. SuperNight and higher frame rates do not guarantee a clean image.
Fast action or slow-motion flexibility Raise frame rate if the scene is bright enough Higher rates may show more noise or softer detail in low light; available options depend on mode and aspect ratio.
Handheld footage Choose a supported stabilization mode suited to the movement Horizon leveling can limit field of view or recording options; check compatibility on camera.
Fast, low-edit sharing Standard color Less suited to a workflow that specifically needs Log footage for grading.
Planned color grading D-Log M Requires a grading workflow to get the intended finished look; check mode limits, including the lower 8K ISO ceiling.
