No—not natively. The project often described as “DOOM Eternal on Game Boy Color” streams the PC game from a gaming PC to a Raspberry Pi fitted inside a Game Boy shell. It is a streaming demonstration, not a Game Boy Color game or cartridge release.
What the Game Boy Color project actually does
Electromaker’s “Doom Eternal On Gameboy color” project, created by 314Reactor, reuses a Raspberry Pi Game Boy-shell build and streams DOOM Eternal from a gaming PC using Moonlight. The Pi handles the stream and the handheld-style controls; the PC runs the game.

The creator’s historical setup instructions mention a gaming PC with an Nvidia graphics card and GeForce Experience, Raspberry Pi software and display setup, Moonlight, and copying the framebuffer. The page gives a 320×240, 30 fps stream command. That is a configuration in the creator’s instructions, not a verified performance result or current, guaranteed setup guide.
Why the controls are a limitation
The project maps the d-pad to mouse movement, A and B to mouse clicks, Start to forward, and Select to jump. The creator says the GPIO controls are slow and sluggish, and that a keyboard and mouse were also used for menus. The project’s own conclusion is: “It does not work well.” This is best understood as a proof-of-concept build, not a polished handheld version.

How it differs from Doom homebrew for handhelds
There are separate Doom-related projects for Game Boy-family systems, but neither is DOOM Eternal. The distinction is important: streaming a PC game into a console-shaped shell is different from running a homebrew game on the handheld itself.
| Option | What runs | Platform and requirements | How it differs |
|---|---|---|---|
| Electromaker Raspberry Pi build | DOOM Eternal streamed from a gaming PC | Raspberry Pi and display in a Game Boy shell, plus a gaming PC and streaming setup | Not native Game Boy Color software; the creator reports sluggish GPIO controls. |
| DOOM for GB | A limited DOOM-inspired demo | Listed as compatible with Game Boy and Game Boy Color, or an emulator | A reimagining, not DOOM Eternal. The listed demo covers only part of E1M1. |
| GBADoom | A prBoom-based Doom port | Game Boy Advance or emulator; a flash cart is needed to use it on real hardware | A GBA project, not a Game Boy Color release or DOOM Eternal. GameBrew lists version 2.7 and a project update date of 2025-08-15. |
Bethesda’s 2020 Chromebook announcement describes official re-releases of DOOM (1993) and DOOM II, while mentioning DOOM Eternal separately in connection with rewards. It does not establish a Game Boy Color edition.
Rank #2
- Unlike modern handheld consoles, the GB Color does not have a back light and is best used in a well lit room or under a lamp.
What you need to know before trying it
- For the streaming build: you need a gaming PC that runs DOOM Eternal, a Raspberry Pi-based build, a display and controls, and a working streaming setup. The project’s instructions are historical and should not be treated as confirmed current installation directions.
- For Game Boy Color homebrew: DOOM for GB is a separate limited demo. A compatible flash cart may be relevant to running appropriate homebrew on physical hardware, but it cannot turn the streaming build into a native DOOM Eternal cartridge.
- For GBA Doom: GBADoom is for Game Boy Advance, a different platform from Game Boy Color. Its stated flash-cart option applies to that GBA project, not to Eternal.
The Electromaker parts list includes a Raspberry Pi Zero case, but that alone does not establish the exact Pi board model used in the build. Check the project instructions for board details before choosing parts.
