Choose an electric or manual full desk if you can replace your current desk; choose a desktop converter if you need to keep it. Then check that the setup fits your seated and standing working heights, supports your equipment, stays stable at the height you use, and suits the room. The right option depends less on a generic “best” desk than on those practical constraints.
Choose between a full desk and a converter
Electric full desk
An electric standing desk raises and lowers the whole work surface with a motor. It is a straightforward fit if you can replace your desk and expect to switch between sitting and standing regularly. Preset controls can make repeat adjustments easier, but check the exact model’s usable height range, lifting capacity, dimensions, controls, cable routing, warranty, and stability at your working height.
As one configuration-specific example, Eaton’s WorkWise guide lists an electric base range of 23.5–49 inches, capacity up to 365 pounds including the desktop, and up to four saved height preferences. Manual or assisted full desk
A manual crank raises and lowers the entire desk through a handle; a pneumatic desk uses assisted movement. Both are non-electric mechanisms, but the effort and ease of adjustment depend on the specific model. Do not assume a manual desk is more reliable simply because it has no electric lift.

Herman Miller’s Renew specifications illustrate how ranges can vary by mechanism: standard electric is listed at 27–46 inches, extended electric at 22–48 inches, crank at 27–46 inches, and pneumatic at 27–46 inches. Desktop converter
A converter sits on or attaches to an existing desk, letting you keep the original work surface. It can make sense when replacing the desk is not allowed or not desirable, though it adds equipment above the existing surface and takes up usable space. How high should a standing desk be?
Measure the actual work heights you need rather than buying to a generic “standard” range. Check both seated and standing positions, and account for any keyboard tray or converter platform: the advertised desk range may not correspond to the final height of your keyboard and screen.
For a rough point of comparison, Vari says most of its electric desks cover 25–50.5 inches. That is a manufacturer statement about its own models, not a universal target. TechRadar’s 2026 guide gives user-height examples and recommends comfortable elbow and wrist positioning; treat those examples as starting guidance, then adjust for your own body and setup. What to check before buying
Measure the space and work surface
For a full desk, check the surface dimensions, shape, and room clearance, including the space needed to stand and move around it. For a converter, measure the existing desktop’s width, depth, and thickness if the converter clamps on. Confirm that the converter’s base fits and that its working area can hold the keyboard and screen in comfortable positions. Calculate the load and assess stability
Add the weight of the desktop, monitors, monitor arms, computer, and accessories, then compare the total with the specific model’s stated capacity. Check stability at the maximum height you expect to use, especially if you have a deep or heavy setup or a monitor arm. Fellowes recommends checking lateral stability at full height. Ergotron notes that aggressive typing, a weak supporting surface, or an unstable desk can contribute to screen vibration; a converter cannot compensate for a surface that is itself unstable. Consider how often and how easily you will adjust it
If you expect to change positions repeatedly, consider whether the control is easy to reach and the adjustment mechanism is convenient enough for your routine. Electric presets can simplify repeated changes; a crank requires manual operation. Also consider adjustment noise and speed in the room, and make sure cables can move safely through the full range. Compare complete configurations, not just frames
When comparing specific models, use the same criteria for each: usable minimum and maximum height (including whether the desktop is counted), mechanism and adjustment effort, work-surface dimensions, stated load capacity, stability at your working height, presets, converter mounting and keyboard/screen positioning, warranty and support, and total cost for the configuration you need. A manufacturer’s stability description is a published claim, not a standardized independent test result. Recheck specifications, availability, configurations, and warranty terms on the manufacturer’s current page before buying.

What a standing desk can—and cannot—promise
Use a sit-stand setup to make changing posture and adding movement possible, not as a treatment or a guarantee of better health or productivity. The cited sources do not establish a named, attributable statistic showing a health outcome from a particular desk. Likewise, do not infer that a desk is ANSI/BIFMA certified unless certification for that exact model is verified; Eaton describes ANSI/BIFMA as covering furniture safety, durability, and structural performance in commercial or institutional environments.
