A connected robot vacuum may process more than a floorplan: depending on its maker, model, app and settings, it can handle device-operation details, Wi-Fi information, room names, objects and, on some models, images or video. Whether that information is sent to a cloud service—and whether you can stop it without losing useful features—varies. Check the policy and controls for your exact model and account region.
What data can a robot vacuum collect?
“Map data” is only one category. A manufacturer may also process information needed to run the device, maintain an account or support connected features. The categories below reflect iRobot’s current US privacy policy; they should not be assumed to describe every brand or vacuum.
- Device and app activity: device name and number, battery life, mission information, device health and operations.
- Maintenance: information such as whether filters or other parts need replenishing.
- Environment and mapping: dirt level, robot movement, floorplans, room names, objects, floor type, and other iRobot devices.
- Connectivity and integrations: Wi-Fi name, credentials and signal strength, plus names of smart-home partner apps.
iRobot says this device data is stored in a deidentified state. Its policy says ordinary devices in the described smart-technology category do not automatically transmit this information unless registered online and connected through Wi-Fi, Bluetooth or the internet. The policy identifies iRobot Select devices as an exception because they require a connection to operate. These are iRobot’s statements, not a general rule for robot vacuums. iRobot US Privacy Policy
Does a robot vacuum upload a map of your house?
It can, but the answer depends on the manufacturer, model and enabled features. iRobot Support says its Smart Maps are stored in the cloud, rather than only in the app. The company also provides a setting that stops spatial data from being sent to its cloud servers. Its support page states: “Disabling Mapping Features will stop the robot from sending any spatial data to our cloud-based servers.” iRobot Support: Map data and privacy

A map is not necessarily a photograph. Spatial data such as a floorplan and room layout is distinct from an obstacle image or camera stream. Check the documentation for the exact model before treating these data types as interchangeable.
How to limit map and image collection
Turn off mapping features on an eligible iRobot
- In the iRobot app, open Accounts > Privacy > Mapping Features.
- Select the robot and toggle Mapping Features off.
- Review which functions you rely on before confirming. iRobot says disabling mapping stops spatial-data transmission to its cloud and also disables schedules and favorites, time estimates, directed-room cleaning, targeted-zone cleaning and Keep Out Zones.
Turning Mapping Features back on requires creating a new map and customizing it. App labels and availability can change, so use the current instructions for your app version and robot if the route differs. iRobot Support: Map data and privacy
Review obstacle-image settings separately
On eligible iRobot devices, obstacle capture and review is a separate choice from mapping. The support page gives this route: Account > Privacy > Map Features > choose robot > Obstacle Image Review. iRobot says images are encrypted and viewable in the app by the account user or someone else with account access. It says the company cannot view or access them unless they are contributed to its image database. Un-contributed encrypted obstacle images are automatically deleted from iRobot servers after 30 days; that duration applies to these images, not maps or all robot data. Turning off image review does not turn off obstacle avoidance, but removes feedback that could change future behavior. iRobot Support: Obstacle Image Review

Disconnect wireless connections if the trade-off is acceptable
iRobot’s policy describes controls for disconnecting devices. Where your model supports it, disconnecting Wi-Fi or Bluetooth may reduce connected transmission, but can also remove remote control, app synchronization, updates, mapping features or other connected functions. Check the model’s instructions and policy before disconnecting; the available controls and consequences are not uniform across manufacturers. iRobot US Privacy Policy
What do manufacturers say about security, cameras and cloud storage?
iRobot
iRobot’s UK security page says maps are encrypted at rest and in transit, access is tightly controlled, monitored and regularly audited, and access by iRobot machines is tracked through data-leak prevention software. These are company descriptions, not an independent audit of every model or app. The page also advises checking the data-handling documents of third-party developers if you connect a non-iRobot app. iRobot UK Security
Roborock
Roborock’s US trust center says collection includes map data, device status and anonymized usage information, while warning that practices vary by model and that the page may not always reflect the latest updates. It was last updated in August 2026. Its camera-related statements are feature-specific: video-call streams are described as encrypted and cleared after a call, while Pet Snap and Pet Search photos are described as stored locally on the device and deleted when permission is withdrawn. Do not apply those claims to models without the relevant features. Roborock US Trust Center

Roborock’s US privacy policy says it uses global cloud services for processing and backups, with data centers in China, Germany and the United States. It gives EEA website use and German server processing as an example; it does not establish which server location applies to every user or device. The policy says data is retained for the purposes for which it was collected or as law permits. It also says deletion may not immediately remove information from backups, which are isolated from further processing until cleared or anonymized. Roborock US Privacy Policy
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How to check your own vacuum’s privacy settings
- Identify the exact model, app version and account region. A brand-level policy or help page may not cover every product or regional service.
- Read the current privacy policy and in-app privacy controls. Look for map generation and cloud storage, whether map transmission can be disabled, and which app functions depend on mapping.
- Check camera and image controls independently. Determine whether image or video features exist on your model and whether review, sharing or contribution is optional.
- Review connected services. If you link a smart-home or third-party app, read that developer’s data policy as well as the vacuum maker’s. iRobot UK Security
- Before selling, gifting or retiring the vacuum, follow the manufacturer’s current device-reset, account-removal and deletion instructions. Account deletion may be subject to exceptions; for Roborock, the US policy also says backups may persist until they are cleared or anonymized. iRobot US Privacy Policy · Roborock US Privacy Policy
