These clips show three different stages of robotics: a fast-moving DEEP Robotics quadruped, a surgical robot learning component skills from video demonstrations, and a two-rover tether system tested in a lunar-like landscape. The crucial distinction: the surgery work demonstrated individual tasks, not complete autonomous operations, and the lunar descent system was tested on Earth—not the Moon.
What do the videos actually show?
IEEE Spectrum’s 15 November 2024 “Video Friday: Extreme Off-Road” is a roundup of robotics clips, not a report on one shared experiment. Its entries range across robot platforms and research projects. Three strands stand out: quadruped movement, surgical skill learning, and rover exploration of a lunar lava tube.
| Video strand | Setting and method | What the evidence shows | What it does not establish |
|---|---|---|---|
| DEEP Robotics | Quadruped footage in rugged terrain; the roundup labels the clip “Deep Robotics.” | Curated footage of a moving robot. | The roundup text does not identify the exact model or establish whether that robot was autonomous. |
| Surgical robot | Research using imitation learning on videos of surgical procedures to train a da Vinci system on component tasks. | Task-level demonstrations involving needle manipulation, tissue lifting, and suturing. | A complete autonomous surgery or clinical approval. |
| Lunar exploration | Two tether-connected rovers coordinating a controlled descent into a lava-tube analogue. | A field demonstration on Lanzarote, Spain. | A test or deployment on the Moon. |

What is the DEEP Robotics clip—and is the robot autonomous?
IEEE Spectrum identifies its featured clip with the label “Deep Robotics,” but the reviewed roundup text does not name the platform. DEEP Robotics’ official video catalog includes clips for Lite3, X30, and Lynx, so the model should not be inferred from the roundup label alone. The company describes Lite3 as a quadruped for research and education; that product description is not independent evidence about the performance or identity of the robot in this particular clip. Roundup editor Evan Ackerman commented that the high-speed footage looked likely to be human-driven and that high-speed autonomy over unstructured terrain remains a work in progress. That is his observation, not a verified finding about who controlled the specific robot shown. The clip demonstrates motion; by itself, it cannot confirm autonomous navigation, obstacle handling, or how much human input was involved.
Did the surgery robot learn to perform an operation?
No. A Johns Hopkins University report published 11 November 2024 describes research by a Johns Hopkins and Stanford team that used imitation learning to train a da Vinci Surgical System from hundreds of wrist-camera videos recorded during procedures. The system was taught three fundamental tasks: manipulating a needle, lifting tissue, and suturing.

Johns Hopkins reported that the robot performed these tasks as skillfully as human doctors. That comparison concerns the reported component tasks; it does not mean the system carried out a complete operation on a patient. The team described full surgery as a goal they were still working toward. The report also does not establish clinical approval.
Senior author Axel Krieger described the approach this way: “It’s really magical to have this model and all we do is feed it camera input and it can predict the robotic movements needed for surgery.” The system’s ability to map visual input to robotic actions is significant, but task-level imitation and an autonomous operation are different milestones.

Johns Hopkins’ 2024 report said nearly 7,000 da Vinci robots were used worldwide and more than 50,000 surgeons had been trained on the system. Those are figures reported by the university at that time, not independently audited current counts. The report is available from Johns Hopkins University.
Did the lunar rover descend into a real Moon lava tube?
No. DFKI’s Tether Management and Docking System was tested on Lanzarote, Spain, during a three-week lunar-analogue mission in January and February 2023. DFKI presented the work at the 75th International Astronautical Congress in Milan in October 2024. The mission simulated aspects of planetary exploration; it was not conducted on the Moon.

The system connects two rovers with a tether. An active winch manages the line as one rover descends, while software coordinates tether release with the rappelling rover’s wheel speed. As DFKI’s publication puts it, “The winch speed is synchronized with the wheel speed of the rappelling rover allowing for a controlled descent.” Its hardware description includes an active winch and passive HOTDOCK and EMI interfaces.
The demonstration is evidence that the tether approach was field-tested in a terrestrial analogue environment. It does not show that the hardware has been deployed on the Moon or that it has been proven in lunar conditions. Details are in DFKI’s publication record.

How should you read the three demonstrations?
- DEEP Robotics: Treat the clip as footage of quadruped movement, not proof of autonomy or a particular model. The source is a curated video roundup.
- Surgical AI: Distinguish learning and performing individual surgical tasks from completing an operation. The university report describes research demonstrations, not patient surgery.
- Lunar exploration: Distinguish a lunar-analogue field test from a mission on the Moon. The tether system was demonstrated on Lanzarote.
These are not competing machines or comparable performance trials. They are different kinds of evidence: a video feature, a university-reported task-learning study, and a field demonstration of rover hardware in an analogue setting.
