DDR5 speed is generally more likely to affect gaming performance at 1080p than at 1440p. Lower resolutions often reduce the graphics card’s workload, making a CPU or memory bottleneck easier to expose. But resolution alone does not determine the result: a CPU-heavy game can remain CPU-limited at 1440p, while a demanding 1080p game can still be limited by the GPU.

Why resolution changes the effect of RAM speed

When a game is limited by the GPU, faster RAM may not raise frame rates much because the graphics card is already the part holding performance back. Lowering resolution or graphics settings can reduce GPU load and shift more work to the CPU and memory subsystem. In that situation, memory speed and timings may have a more visible effect.

This is why 1080p often reveals memory differences more readily than 1440p, especially with a powerful graphics card, low settings, or a high-refresh-rate display. It is a tendency, not a rule. Game engine, scene, CPU, GPU, settings, and memory configuration all matter.

What benchmark results show

DDR4 versus DDR5 is related, but not the same comparison

In a 2021 TechSpot test of 41 games on an Intel Core i9-12900K and Radeon RX 6900 XT, DDR5-6000 was 3% faster on average than DDR4-3600 CL14 at 1080p and 2% faster at 1440p. Those are geomean results for an older platform comparing DDR4 with DDR5—not a direct comparison between two DDR5 speeds or a forecast for every current PC. The variation between games was substantial: 26 of the 41 titles differed by 4% or less. TechSpot’s 41-game DDR4-versus-DDR5 test.

Among DDR5 kits, timings can narrow the gap

In a 2025 TechSpot test on Ryzen AM5, DDR5-8000 improved Cyberpunk 2077 performance by as much as 12% over DDR5-6000 CL30 at 1080p, but it was only 2% faster than DDR5-6000 CL26. In Horizon Zero Dawn Remastered, DDR5-8000 was 7% ahead of DDR5-6000 CL30 and 2% ahead of DDR5-6000 CL26. Differences were small or narrowed at higher resolutions. These results show why data rate alone is not enough to judge a kit: timings and the platform’s memory behavior also matter. TechSpot’s Ryzen DDR5 scaling test.

CPU-heavy settings can affect both averages and lows

In the same AM5 testing, Marvel Rivals at 1080p delivered 9% higher average frame rates and 17% better 1% lows with DDR5-8000 than with the DDR5-5600 baseline. DDR5-6000 CL26 performed similarly to DDR5-8000. Average FPS describes overall throughput; 1% lows help show how performance behaves during the slower moments of gameplay.

Graphics settings can matter as much as resolution

A 2026 PC Gamer test compared DDR5-4800 CL40 with DDR5-6000 CL32 using a Ryzen 9 9900X and RTX 5090. In a separate Hogwarts Legacy test with an RTX 3060 Ti at 1080p, slower memory reduced average FPS and 1% lows by 7% and 13% at low settings, and by 6% and 10% at medium settings. At high and ultra settings, the differences were only 1% and 2%. This illustrates how reducing GPU load can make memory effects more apparent. PC Gamer cautions that gameplay-capture results vary with game activity and the active CPU or GPU limit, so small differences should not be treated as universal. PC Gamer’s RAM-speed gaming test.

How to compare RAM-speed results fairly

A percentage from one benchmark is useful only in the context of its test setup. For a fair comparison, check whether the systems match on the factors that can change the result:

What Ryzen AM5 owners should know about DDR5-6000

In the tested Ryzen AM5 setup, TechSpot describes DDR5-6000 as operating with a 1:1 memory-controller ratio at a 3000 MHz memory clock. Above that speed, its tested platform moved to a 2:1 ratio, which can offset some of the benefit of higher bandwidth. This behavior is platform-specific; it should not be assumed for other CPUs or motherboards. Based on its testing, TechSpot recommends DDR5-6000 CL30 for Ryzen AM5, but that is not a universal best-speed rule. See the platform-specific test and recommendation.

  • G.SKILL Flare X5 Series DDR5 U-DIMM Memory Kit, Model: F5-6000J3636F16GX2-FX5
  • Non-ECC, DDR5 U-DIMM, 288-pin, for Desktop PC & Gaming
  • Includes JEDEC default profile, and AMD EXPO & Intel XMP 3.0 memory overclock profile
  • Do not mix memory kits. Memory kits are sold in matched kits that are designed to run together as a set. Mixing memory kits will result in stability issues or system failure.

AMD EXPO provides memory profiles for supported AM5 systems, but enabling a profile changes memory operation from published default specifications. AMD warns that changing frequencies, multipliers, timings, or voltage outside those specifications can void applicable warranties and carries risks including instability, hardware damage, and data loss. Check CPU and motherboard support as well as warranty documentation before changing settings. AMD’s EXPO information and warning.

Should you buy faster DDR5 for gaming?

If you already have a compatible DDR5 kit, the evidence does not justify replacing a reasonable-speed kit solely to chase an extreme data rate. Faster memory can help in selected CPU-limited games, but the advantage over a well-tuned mainstream configuration may be small, and gains can narrow as GPU load rises.

For a Ryzen AM5 build, 32 GB of DDR5-6000 CL30 is a defensible value-oriented example based on the cited testing. Check your motherboard’s memory support list and the kit’s compatibility before buying; compatibility and local prices can vary. No kit guarantees a particular FPS increase.
