There is no universal line size for electric trimmers.
Start with the trimmer’s exact model number
Find the model number on the tool’s label, then use that number to locate the manufacturer’s manual. Check the manual’s replacement-line instructions for three separate requirements: diameter, line shape, and compatible head or spool. A size that fits one electric trimmer may feed poorly or damage another.
For example, the manuals for these three models specify different options:

These specifications apply to the named models; they are examples, not a guide to every trimmer from those brands. Manuals+ reproduces manufacturer instructions, so check the manufacturer’s current manual if your model has a regional variant or revision.

Match both diameter and shape
Diameter is only half the specification. Line may be round, twisted, or spiral-shaped, and a manual may permit one shape or several. Treat the listed options as model-specific rather than assuming a shape that works in another trimmer will work in yours.
Do not assume thicker line is an upgrade. The CRAFTSMAN CMEST900 manual warns that larger or non-round line can interfere with feeding and overload the motor, causing overheating. That warning is for the CMEST900; use your own manual for your model’s restrictions. DEWALT likewise says that using a different size in the DCST922 can reduce performance, damage the tool, or cause injury.

Choose bulk line or a prewound spool that fits
Once you know the approved line, check how your trimmer head is designed to reload. Some heads accept bulk line wound onto the spool; others use a replacement spool, and a model may offer both approaches. The line diameter and shape do not by themselves establish that a spool will fit: confirm the replacement spool is compatible with the exact head and model.
The CRAFTSMAN CMEST900 manual describes both bulk line and prewound spools, and recommends factory-wound spools for best results on that model. RYOBI’s P20102 instructions describe removing the battery, aligning the line and spool slots with the eyelet, and avoiding overfilling the spool. Follow your own model’s loading steps rather than transferring a procedure from another trimmer. (RYOBI P20102 manual)

Replace line safely and follow the loading instructions
- Isolate power. Unplug a corded trimmer or remove the battery pack, as directed by its manual. The CRAFTSMAN CMEST900 procedure begins with unplugging; the DEWALT DCST922 manual says to remove the battery before replacing line.
- Use the specified replacement. Check the approved diameter, shape, and spool or head compatibility before loading. Do not substitute wire, rope, or an unapproved attachment.
- Load without overfilling. Follow the model’s directions for winding, spool-slot alignment, and feeding line through the eyelet. Overfilling can interfere with feeding.
- Reassemble and check the guard. Refit the spool and head parts as instructed, and keep the specified guard in place before reconnecting power or reinstalling the battery.
DEWALT cautions that line from another manufacturer can reduce performance, damage the DCST922, or cause injury. Where the manual recommends or specifies manufacturer replacement line or a particular spool, use that guidance rather than assuming another product is interchangeable.

- Do I have the exact trimmer model number?
- Does the manual permit this line diameter?
- Does it permit this line shape?
- Is this bulk line or prewound spool compatible with my head?
- Does the manufacturer specify a replacement line or spool to use?
For instance, searching for “0.065-inch round trimmer line” is appropriate only if your own manual specifies that diameter and shape, as the CRAFTSMAN CMEST900 manual does. Do not use that search phrase as a universal recommendation.
