During the bright phase, the disk can outshine the young star itself. Astronomers piece together what is happening by tracking brightness and analyzing light across different wavelengths: Hubble’s ultraviolet spectra probe the hot inner disk, while ALMA’s millimeter observations trace gas flowing through the system. The enhanced accretion is central to the explanation, but what triggers a particular outburst remains uncertain.
What a FU Orionis outburst is
FU Orionis (FU Ori) is both the name of a particular young stellar system and the namesake of a class of eruptive events called FU Orionis-type outbursts, or FUors. In these events, a young star’s rate of accretion—the flow of surrounding material onto it—rises sharply, and the system becomes much more luminous. The standard picture places the main change in the circumstellar disk: during an outburst, the rapidly accreting disk can become a major, sometimes dominant, source of visible and infrared light. See the 1996 review of the FU Orionis phenomenon.
That distinction matters when astronomers interpret the brightening. They are not simply watching a star’s surface get brighter. The disk and its interaction with the young star contribute to the observed light, so its spectrum and changes over time help reveal the physical conditions.
How astronomers study the outburst
No single observation answers every question. Astronomers combine methods that track changes over time with observations that separate the light by wavelength or map material around the system.

| Method | What it measures | What it can show | Important limit |
|---|---|---|---|
| Brightness monitoring, or photometry | Brightness in one or more wavelength bands, repeated over time | A light curve showing when a system brightens, how it fades, and whether its colors change | A light curve alone does not identify the physical cause. |
| Spectroscopy | How brightness varies across wavelengths, including spectral features | Clues about temperature, motion, and whether light comes from the disk, the star-disk boundary, or an outflow | Physical conditions are inferred from the spectrum; interpretation may depend on models. |
| Millimeter and submillimeter observations | Continuum and molecular-line emission from surrounding material | Maps of dust and gas; molecular lines can reveal structures and flows | A detected gas structure does not, by itself, establish what triggered the outburst. |
When comparing results, it helps to ask which wavelength was observed, how much time the observations cover, what spatial and spectral detail they provide, what kind of emission was measured, and whether a statement describes a detection or an interpretation.
What Hubble revealed about FU Ori’s inner disk
For its study of FU Ori, Hubble used the Cosmic Origins Spectrograph (COS) and the Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph (STIS) to obtain far-ultraviolet and new near-ultraviolet spectra. The aim was to probe close to the disk’s inner edge and test its expected temperature structure. Ultraviolet spectroscopy gives astronomers a way to investigate the hot region where disk material approaches and meets the young star; it is a different diagnostic from a map of gas farther out.

The team interpreted the unexpectedly strong ultraviolet emission as evidence for a hot impact region where accreting disk material reaches the stellar surface. The Hubble study reported a temperature of 16,000 kelvins for that region. This is the study’s interpretation for FU Ori—not the star’s surface temperature or a typical value for all FUors. NASA also reports that FU Ori was intrinsically about 100 times as bright as the Sun at its peak and has faded gradually since its outburst. These findings are specific to FU Ori; they should not automatically be applied to every system in the FUor class. See NASA’s account of the Hubble study.
What ALMA found around the system
ALMA observations detected a long, narrow stream of carbon-monoxide gas falling toward FU Ori. Multiple antenna configurations let the team capture different emission and detect mass flow. The observed streamer is evidence that material can feed the system from its surroundings.

- PATENTED STARSENSE TECHNOLOGY: Unlike other astronomy apps, StarSense Explorer uses sky recognition technology to turn your phone into a celestial navigation system, analyzing star patterns overhead to pinpoint your telescope’s position.
- TONIGHT’S BEST TARGETS, INSTANTLY: The app generates a curated list of the top objects to see based on your time and location. See planets, bright nebulae, galaxies, and star clusters from the city—and even more from dark skies.
- SIMPLE SETUP, SMOOTH TRACKING: Features a manual altazimuth mount with altitude slow motion adjustment with a sliding rod. Follow the on-screen arrows to your target; when the bullseye turns green, you can view it clearly through the eyepiece.
- 114MM REFLECTOR WITH IMPRESSIVE VIEWS: The 4.5" Newtonian reflector with high-reflectivity coatings delivers sharp, vivid views of the Moon, planets like Jupiter and Saturn, and deep-sky favorites like the Orion Nebula and Andromeda Galaxy.
The observation does not show that the streamer is fueling the current eruption: the team said the detected stream appeared insufficient to do so and might be a remnant of an earlier, larger flow. The suggestion that a past interaction with such a flow destabilized the system is a possible history, not a demonstrated trigger. See ALMA’s account of the observations.
How large is the change in accretion?
Estimates depend on the framework and should not be treated as universal measurements for every FUor. Hartmann and Kenyon’s 1996 review gives representative accretion rates of approximately 10−7 solar masses per year in a low state and approximately 10−4 solar masses per year in FU Ori’s high state. A separate 1994 thermal-disk model estimated high-state rates of roughly 1–10 × 10−6 solar masses per year and outburst episodes on the order of 100 years, with much longer low states in the model. Those are model estimates, with a different scope from the review’s representative values; they are not interchangeable measurements. The model is described in the NASA Technical Reports Server record.

What causes an outburst—and what remains unsettled
The broad explanation is that FUors undergo episodes of strongly enhanced accretion. The detailed mechanism that starts an individual episode, however, has not been resolved. Thermal instability has been proposed as a route to an outburst, and interactions with a companion may contribute in some systems. These remain hypotheses rather than a single confirmed explanation.
ALMA’s gas streamer adds evidence that material can flow toward FU Ori from its larger environment, but it does not establish the cause of the outburst. The distinction between observation and explanation is essential: astronomers detected the carbon-monoxide structure, while its connection to an earlier destabilizing event is an interpretation. Current observations and theory provide a useful framework for understanding FUors without proving that all young stars experience identical events or that one trigger explains every case.
