The fastest way to tell a mastodon molar from a mammoth molar is to examine its chewing surface: mastodon teeth have distinct rounded or cone-shaped cusps with valleys between them; mammoth teeth have many thin enamel plates that form parallel ridges.

Compare the chewing surfaces

Clue Mastodon molar Mammoth molar
Chewing surface Separate rounded or conical cusps, with valleys between them Numerous flattened enamel plates or loops, appearing as parallel ridges
Side profile Often looks comparatively knobby, with individual peaks Corrugated or washboard-like, because the enamel ridges cross the crown
Crown and roots Kansas Geological Survey describes mastodon molars as low-crowned and rooted Kansas Geological Survey describes mammoth molars as high-crowned, with numerous thin transverse enamel ridges

The crown and roots can support an identification, but the chewing-surface pattern is the clearest quick clue. The Smithsonian describes upper mastodon molars as having rows of conical cusps, while museum and university descriptions distinguish mammoth teeth by their plates or loops. How to inspect a tooth

  1. Find the chewing surface. Look for separate peaks and valleys, or for a series of closely spaced enamel ridges.
  2. Check the side of the crown. A mammoth’s plates make a corrugated profile; mastodon cusps tend to stand out as distinct rounded peaks.
  3. Use crown height and roots as secondary clues. Compare them with the general low-crowned mastodon and high-crowned mammoth descriptions, not as a substitute for the chewing surface.
  4. Look at more than one view. Wear, breakage, or an incomplete tooth can hide the pattern. If asking for help identifying a possible fossil, include several clear photos and a ruler or coin for scale, as the University of Michigan repository advises.

These are practical clues, not a guarantee for every fragment. Tooth position and wear can affect what is visible, and an incomplete piece may not preserve enough of the crown to identify confidently. University of Michigan repository: tooth identification tips and 3D models.

Why the teeth look different

The contrasting surfaces reflect different ways of processing plant foods. Mastodon cusps were suited to crushing leaves, twigs, and other coarse plant material; mammoth enamel plates provided a grinding surface associated with grazing on grasses. These are broad feeding tendencies, not claims that either animal ate only one kind of food. Natural History Museum of Utah: mammoths and mastodons; Virginia Institute of Marine Science.

Using models to learn the difference

Comparing a replica or 3D model can make the surface patterns easier to recognize. The University of Michigan repository links models of mastodon and mammoth teeth, and the University of Minnesota documents a mastodon tooth cast as a teaching resource. A model is useful for learning the shape, but it cannot authenticate a fossil you have found. University of Michigan repository; University of Minnesota teaching resource.
