Start with the transportation agency responsible for the closed road, then check the entire proposed alternate route for current restrictions and hazards. Use a navigation app to compare possible paths—not to confirm that a road is open or safe—and follow official detour signs. If no route can be verified as suitable, wait, postpone the trip, or check local transit or shuttle options.

What should I do first when a road is closed?

  1. If you are driving, get to a safe place before checking. If you cannot use hands-free controls, pull over where stopping is legal and safe. Do not stop in a live lane or where signs prohibit it. 511.org advises checking before departure, using voice commands, or pulling over before using a smartphone (511.org).
  2. Read the closure notice. Note the location and direction, whether the closure is full or partial, any stated cause, and whether authorities have marked an official detour.
  3. Check the road authority’s current information. Use the state, provincial, or local transportation department responsible for the road, or its official traveler-information service. In much of North America, 511 is regional rather than one uniform nationwide service. Caltrans says calls route to region-specific information, and many 511 systems also provide web and mobile trip-planning tools (Caltrans: 511 real-time traveler information).
  4. Verify the whole alternate route. Look beyond the first turn around the closure for other closures, construction, incidents, traffic, weather, road conditions, vehicle restrictions, and any other limitation relevant to your trip.
  5. Follow official signs and instructions. Do not drive around barricades or enter a closed road. A consumer map’s suggested path is not a substitute for an authority-designated detour.
  6. Recheck if the incident is changing or your trip is long. Information services have different update schedules, and conditions may change between reports.

How do I find a detour around a road closure?

Begin with the agency responsible for the affected road. Its closure notice or traveler-information service is the best place to learn whether an official detour is in effect. Confirm that the service covers the right area: 511 services differ by region in both coverage and the detail they report.

Then check the proposed detour itself. A route that avoids the blocked segment may still lead to another closure, poor weather, a restricted road, or conditions unsuitable for your vehicle. 511NY specifically advises checking conditions on the alternate route under consideration; its map can show closures, incidents, construction, speeds, and winter conditions (511NY).

Do not treat a blank map, missing camera, or absent alert as proof that the road is clear. 511NY notes that cameras, signs, and speed sensors are not installed on every road. Its winter-condition map relies on snowplow reports and updates at least every four hours in winter, more often during storms; these are 511NY service details, not a universal update standard (511NY).

What is the safest alternate route?

There is no universally safest route without knowing why the road closed, what hazards affect the alternatives, and the needs of your vehicle and trip. Safety and legality come before travel time. Compare candidate routes using these checks:

  • Official status: Is the road open, and are there posted restrictions or an official detour?
  • Current conditions: Are there reported hazards, incidents, construction, congestion, or weather concerns along the full route?
  • Vehicle suitability: Can your vehicle legally and practically use every segment, including any limits on size, weight, clearance, or road type?
  • Practical support: For a remote or extended trip, consider access to fuel, services, and communications where relevant.
  • Time: Compare travel time only after confirming that the route is lawful and reasonably suitable.

Authorities make operational detour decisions; route safety depends on assessing the road and conditions. A published British Columbia emergency-detour report describes assessment of road conditions as part of determining whether a route is safe and viable (British Columbia emergency-detour routes report). Follow local authority directions rather than substituting a map-generated shortcut.

Can Google Maps or another navigation app avoid a road closure?

A navigation app can help you see candidate paths, but it cannot certify that a road is open, that a closure report is current, or that a route is safe for your vehicle. Cross-check the route with the responsible road authority and obey barricades and detour signs.

511NY’s FAQ explains that users can edit a displayed path with waypoints to route around a closure. That is a routing feature, not a safety guarantee (511NY). If an app’s route conflicts with official instructions, follow the official instructions.

How do I check if an alternate route is open?

Use the transportation agency or official traveler-information service for the region where the alternate road is located. Check each relevant segment for closures, incidents, construction, weather, road conditions, and restrictions—not just the point nearest the original closure. Where the official service offers a map, alerts, or trip planning, use those tools to inspect the route, but remember that report coverage and update timing vary.

For example, Nova Scotia 511 says major disruptions are updated as developments occur, winter conditions are updated three times daily or after significant changes, and processed information is posted within five minutes. Those timing statements describe that service; they do not apply to every 511 system (511 Nova Scotia FAQ). If information is missing or uncertain, do not assume the route is open.

What if driving is not a reasonable option?

If no candidate route appears suitable, wait for an official update, postpone the trip if circumstances permit, or check whether local transit or a shuttle is operating. A transit alternative is not available for every closure. In the Bay Area, 511 says transit may be the best or only option during a roadway or bridge emergency and advises checking for service changes and relocated stops (Bay Area 511).

If there is an emergency on a highway, use the local emergency number. Nova Scotia 511 instructs callers to call 911 for an emergency; emergency numbers differ by location (511 Nova Scotia FAQ).
