Choose a personal locator beacon (PLB) if you want a dedicated distress alert and do not need routine satellite messages. Choose a satellite messenger if you also want check-ins, tracking, or two-way contact that can help explain an emergency. Both can send distress alerts, but neither guarantees a connection or rescue in every location or condition.
How a satellite messenger differs from a PLB
A PLB is designed primarily to summon help. A 406 MHz PLB sends a distress alert through the Cospas-Sarsat satellite system; NOAA also describes a low-power homing signal that can help rescue forces locate the beacon as they approach. NOAA characterizes 406 PLBs as portable units intended to be carried by an individual person (NOAA SARSAT).
A satellite messenger combines an SOS function with communication features. For example, Garmin inReach supports custom, check-in, and quick text messages, along with interactive SOS coordination through Garmin Response. Features vary by device, and inReach messaging and SOS require an active satellite subscription (Garmin; Garmin support).
When two-way messaging matters
In an emergency, the ability to exchange messages can help you describe what happened, share relevant details, and respond to questions during coordination. Garmin says its inReach SOS service connects with Garmin Response, where users can relay information as the incident is coordinated. A PLB generally sends an alert rather than supporting an ongoing conversation. Some PLBs may offer return-link service, but do not assume a particular unit confirms that its alert was received; check the model’s specifications.

- Small, rugged, lightweight satellite communicator enables two-way text messaging even in areas with no cell coverage (Active satellite subscription required. Some jurisdictions regulate or prohibit the use of satellite communication devices)
- Send two-way messages globally; easily text back and forth directly with friends via the Garmin Messenger app, even when you’re out of cellular coverage. (Active satellite subscription required. Some jurisdictions regulate or prohibit the use of satellite communication devices.)
- Group messaging via the Garmin Messenger smartphone app lets you share your adventures with multiple contacts simultaneously — and have group text chats with friends and family
- Check in with contacts directly by using preset messages that do not count toward your allotted text messages (Active satellite subscription required. Some jurisdictions regulate or prohibit the use of satellite communication devices)
- Share your GPS location (Active satellite subscription required. Some jurisdictions regulate or prohibit the use of satellite communication devices)
Messaging can also be useful before an emergency: check in with family, share an itinerary update, or send a status message from outside cellular coverage. Those are messenger functions, not standard PLB functions. Garmin’s inReach Messenger Plus adds photo and voice messaging when used with a compatible smartphone app and an active service plan; those capabilities do not apply to every satellite messenger (Garmin Messenger Plus).
Which is the better fit for your hike?
| Hiking need | Likely fit | Why |
|---|---|---|
| A dedicated SOS alert, without routine satellite messages | PLB | PLBs are individual-carried distress beacons, and Garmin says they generally do not require a subscription. Registration and battery readiness still matter. |
| Check-ins, status updates, or the ability to explain an emergency | Satellite messenger | Two-way messaging and interactive SOS coordination can support contact before and during an incident. Garmin inReach requires active satellite service. |
| Photo or voice messages as well as SOS | A compatible satellite messenger | These functions are model-specific. Garmin documents photo and voice messaging for Messenger Plus with an active service plan and compatible smartphone app. |
Subscriptions, registration, and battery readiness
Service fees
Garmin requires an active satellite subscription for inReach SOS and communication features. PLBs generally have no subscription fee, according to Garmin’s comparison, though battery replacement and optional return-link services depend on the model. Confirm current service terms for the device you are considering; plan features and prices can change.

- Compact SOS satellite communicator enables two-way text, photo and voice messaging even in areas with no cell coverage; requires active subscription (some jurisdictions regulate or prohibit the use of satellite communication devices)
- Connect with your compatible smartphone using the Garmin Messenger app to share your adventures with multiple contacts simultaneously; send text messages with up to 1,600 characters, share photos and send 30-second voice messages with friends and family
- Explore with peace of mind knowing you can trigger an interactive SOS message to Garmin Response℠, a 24/7-staffed international coordination center, to seek help in an emergency (active subscription required; some jurisdictions regulate or prohibit the use of satellite communication devices)
- Check in with friends and family by using preset phrases that do not count against your monthly allotted text messages, or send custom messages when you have more to say
- Optimized inReach device messaging uses either Wi-Fi technology or the cellular connection of your smartphone then seamlessly switches to satellite technology when you go beyond cell service (active subscription required; some jurisdictions regulate or prohibit the use of satellite communication devices)
Registration
In the United States, NOAA directs owners to register 406 MHz beacons in its national registration database. Requirements differ by jurisdiction, so check the applicable rules for the country where you will use the beacon and for your hiking destination (NOAA SARSAT).
Battery and trip checks
- For a PLB, check the battery service or expiration date and follow the manufacturer’s instructions for testing and maintenance.
- For any device, learn how its SOS controls work before leaving, and make sure you can access them under stress.
- Check the device’s model-specific capabilities, battery information, and destination coverage rather than assuming all units in a category are alike.
Reception, coverage, and what the evidence does not establish
Satellite reception is not automatic. Garmin warns that reception conditions affect inReach messages and SOS, so a device may not be able to communicate in every location or circumstance (Garmin support). Verify network and device availability for your destination, and follow the manufacturer’s instructions for positioning and operation.

- Internal, rechargeable lithium battery supports up to 350 hours with 10-minute inReach tracking and up to 95 hours in performance messaging mode
Official NOAA and Garmin materials establish the broad functional differences, but they do not establish that one category produces better rescue outcomes or is universally more reliable. They also do not provide a complete current model-by-model comparison of weight, battery life, water resistance, and controls. Compare the manuals and service details for the exact devices you are considering instead of relying on category-wide assumptions.
