Choose a standing desk converter if your current desk works and you want to raise your keyboard and monitor without replacing it. Choose a full height-adjustable desk if you are replacing the desk or need the entire tabletop to move. Either choice is only a good fit if it can put your work surface at comfortable seated and standing heights and accommodate your equipment.

A sit-stand setup is meant to help you vary positions, not stand all day. The Canadian Centre for Occupational Health and Safety (CCOHS) says, “The key factor is to alternate your position as needed.”

What moves: the converter platform or the whole desk

A converter sits on top of an existing desk and raises the work area. Depending on its design, it may have separate surfaces for the monitor and keyboard. A full height-adjustable desk moves the entire tabletop, including everything placed on it. Fellowes explains desk-conversion options, while the University of Manitoba fact sheet discusses sit-stand workstation selection.

Compare the choices against your setup

Consideration Desk converter Full height-adjustable desk
What moves A platform on your existing desk raises the work area. The entire tabletop moves.
Existing furniture Keeps the desk you have; check its usable width, depth, and surface condition. Replaces your existing desk.
Equipment layout Check the platform dimensions, keyboard tray, monitor position, and model load limit. Check tabletop dimensions, equipment capacity, and how cables and storage will work as the desk moves.
Height and posture It must lower enough for seated work and raise the keyboard to a comfortable standing height. The monitor may need separate adjustment. It must reach your seated and standing work heights while supporting a neutral arm, wrist, and head position.
Best fit Your existing desk works and you want an adjustable raised work area without replacing it. You are replacing the desk or want the whole surface, including equipment, to move.

Neither category is universally more stable, durable, ergonomic, or cost-effective. Those qualities depend on the individual model; the sources here do not provide neutral, model-by-model performance tests.

Check dimensions and equipment before choosing

For a converter

  • Measure the desk’s usable width and depth, then compare them with the converter’s footprint.
  • Measure the equipment you need on the raised platform. Account for the keyboard and mouse, monitor, and any separate keyboard tray or monitor tier.
  • Check the model’s adjustment range at both ends: it must work for seated use as well as standing use.
  • Confirm the model’s stated capacity can support the equipment you intend to place on it.

For a full desk

  • Check that the tabletop has enough usable area for your equipment and intended layout.
  • Compare the desk’s height range with your own seated and standing working heights; do not assume a particular model suits every user.
  • Check the stated equipment capacity and plan for cables or storage that may be affected when the entire top moves.

The University of Manitoba fact sheet provides example elbow heights and a typical sit-stand equipment-capacity range, but these are general guidance examples—not specifications for a particular product or requirements for every user. Use the actual measurements of the person and model you are fitting.

Set the work surface for seated and standing use

  1. Set the keyboard height. Whether you use a converter or a full desk, aim for hands, wrists, and forearms that are straight and roughly parallel to the floor. Keep shoulders relaxed and elbows close to your body. CCOHS recommends placing the standing platform approximately at elbow height.
  2. Check the monitor separately. Position the screen so you can view it without an awkward head position. A converter may raise the keyboard and monitor together, so check that the screen is still at a suitable viewing height; a separate monitor adjustment, such as a monitor arm, may help if it is not.
  3. Repeat the posture check while seated. Make sure the converter lowers enough or the full desk adjusts low enough for comfortable seated work, with the keyboard and mouse positioned appropriately.
  4. Make small changes as you work. OSHA recommends changing working position frequently, making small chair adjustments, stretching, standing for some tasks, and walking around periodically. CCOHS also recommends considering supportive footwear, shifting weight or using a footrest, and an anti-fatigue mat where appropriate.

Alternate positions rather than standing all day

CCOHS does not prescribe one required sit-stand interval: its guidance notes that recommendations vary, from brief standing periods to longer alternations. Alternate as needed and allow time to adjust. Prolonged standing can contribute to discomfort and problems affecting the feet, knees, hips, or back; an anti-fatigue mat does not replace movement. Read CCOHS sit-stand workstation guidance and its guidance on standing.

Make the decision

  • Keep your desk and add a converter if the current desk is suitable, its dimensions accommodate a converter, and you can achieve comfortable seated and standing keyboard and monitor positions.
  • Replace it with a height-adjustable desk if you need the whole tabletop to move or are replacing the desk anyway, provided the model’s height range, surface, and capacity suit your setup.
  • Reconsider either option if the available model cannot reach your working heights, hold your equipment, or support a comfortable screen and keyboard arrangement.
