Rechargeable NiMH AA and AAA batteries can seem to stop holding a charge because they naturally lose energy while stored, because a device draws power even when switched off, or because the cells have aged. Dirty contacts, an unsuitable charger, or mismatched cells can also cause unusually short runtime. Start with charging and contact checks; if runtime stays poor, the cells may need replacing.
This guidance focuses on consumer nickel-metal hydride (NiMH) batteries. Do not apply it automatically to lithium-ion batteries in phones, laptops, power tools, or vehicles; follow the instructions for those batteries and devices.
Why rechargeable NiMH batteries lose charge or run out quickly
They self-discharge during storage
NiMH batteries lose some charge through internal reactions even when they are not connected to a device. Heat increases self-discharge, so store cells in a cool, dry place. Energizer’s 2010 NiMH handbook gives a typical estimate of 50% to 80% capacity remaining after 12 months of storage; this is not a guarantee, and actual retention depends on the cells and storage conditions. Energizer NiMH Handbook and Application Manual
The device may still draw power
Some equipment keeps small circuits active after it is switched off. A battery left inside can therefore lose charge from both self-discharge and the device’s standby load. Remove NiMH cells when storing a device for an extended period. Energizer NiMH Handbook and Application Manual

The cells may be worn or stressed
Usable capacity declines as batteries age. Deeply discharging a NiMH cell, especially as part of a mismatched group, can also contribute to poor performance. Panasonic advises recharging before complete depletion and using cells of the same type and model together, charged and used as a set. In a series-powered device, the weakest cell can run out first while the others continue to discharge it. Panasonic Energy consumer FAQ
Contacts, charging, or the device may be the problem
Dirty terminals can interrupt power and make a healthy battery appear unreliable. A charger that is not designed for the cell chemistry, or that does not stop charging appropriately, can also cause problems. Short runtime alone does not prove that a cell is permanently damaged.

What to check before replacing the batteries
- Confirm the battery type. Check that the cells are rechargeable NiMH and that their size matches the device. Never put alkaline or other non-rechargeable primary batteries in a charger. Panasonic Energy consumer FAQ Energizer Rechargeable Batteries and Chargers FAQ
- Charge them with a compatible charger. Follow the battery maker’s directions. Energizer says NiMH cells are sensitive to continuous overcharge and describes smart chargers that monitor cell parameters to decide when to stop. A charger cannot restore capacity permanently lost through aging. Energizer Rechargeable Batteries and Chargers FAQ
- Check and clean the contacts. Inspect the battery terminals and the device’s contacts. If they are dirty, clean them with a clean, dry cloth, then reinstall the cells securely. Panasonic Energy consumer FAQ
- Match cells in multi-battery devices. Use the same type and model, and charge and use the cells together. Do not mix new and old cells or cells at different charge levels. Panasonic Energy consumer FAQ
- Account for storage and standby drain. Recharge cells that have been sitting unused. Store them somewhere cool and dry, and remove them from equipment during extended storage. Panasonic Energy consumer FAQ Energizer NiMH Handbook and Application Manual
- Assess runtime after these checks. If a cell still provides substantially less runtime, charges abnormally slowly or incompletely, or never seems to finish charging, it may have deteriorated. Panasonic suggests considering replacement when eneloop runtime falls to about half its former level; that is a Panasonic recommendation for eneloop, not a universal end-of-life threshold. Panasonic Energy consumer FAQ
When and how to replace a set
Replace cells that continue to provide poor runtime after appropriate charging and contact checks. If a device uses several cells together, Panasonic recommends replacing them as a set rather than leaving older cells to work alongside a new one. For the replacement, choose rechargeable batteries with the chemistry and physical size specified for the device; runtime depends on both the cells and the device’s power demand.
When comparing cells, treat cycle-life and storage-retention claims as specific to the named product and test method. Panasonic’s current eneloop product information reports approximately 600 charging cycles under IEC 61951-2:2017 test conditions, compared with “up to 2,100 times” under the earlier IEC 61951-2:2011 method. These are test-method-dependent eneloop claims, not a promise for every NiMH battery. The same product information says eneloop retains 70% capacity after 10 years in storage at 20 °C, based on Panasonic’s estimate and the IEC 61951-2 test method; results vary with use conditions. Should you fully discharge NiMH batteries before recharging?
No. Routine full discharge is not the recommended fix for ordinary NiMH runtime problems. Panasonic says eneloop can be topped up at any time and warns that completely depleting cells can cause over-discharge and shorten their life. Its top-up guidance is specific to eneloop; follow the instructions for your battery model. Panasonic Energy consumer FAQ
