Usually, no. In a multi-cell device, use a matched set of rechargeable batteries with the same chemistry, capacity, brand and similar age, charge level and use history. Mixing mismatched cells can make one run down before the others, increasing the risk of over-discharge, damage or leakage. Follow the device manual: an exception applies only when the manufacturer permits a specified combination for that exact model and mode.
Why mixing rechargeable batteries can cause problems
Cells in a multi-battery device may not run down at the same rate. In a series group, a cell with lower capacity or less charge can become depleted while the others still have energy. Panasonic warns that this mismatch can over-discharge the weaker cell and lead to damage or leakage. Energizer also cautions that capacity differences can reduce performance and the lower-capacity cell’s cycle life. These are manufacturer warnings, not a quantified prediction for every device or battery combination.
What makes a set “matched”?
Panasonic advises against mixing batteries that differ in capacity, type, brand or age. Keep cells assigned to the same device together through charging and use; swapping cells between devices can give them different use histories and leave their capacities uneven.
- Chemistry and type: Do not combine rechargeable cells with a different chemistry or with primary, non-rechargeable cells unless the device manufacturer explicitly allows it.
- Capacity: Use cells with the same stated capacity rather than combining higher- and lower-capacity cells.
- Brand, model and age: Use the same brand and model, with cells of similar age and wear.
- Charge level and history: Charge and use the cells as a group; do not mix a freshly charged cell with a partly depleted one.
- Device requirements: Check the manual for the required cell size, chemistry and any model-specific allowance.

How to replace and charge cells safely
- Check the device manual for the required size and chemistry. Do not assume that a cell that fits physically is compatible.
- Replace all cells in the device at the same time rather than adding one new cell to an older set. Panasonic recommends replacing the set together.
- Keep the set together during charging and use. Use a charger compatible with the specific batteries; charger suitability depends on the battery and charger models.
- Do not put primary, non-rechargeable batteries in a rechargeable battery charger.
Are there exceptions?
Yes, but they are specific to certain products and operating modes. Panasonic’s Japanese support answer identifies the BQ-CC87, BQ-CC91, BQ-CCA3, BH-BZ40 and BF-BL45 as products that allow specified mixed-battery use in particular modes because they individually detect or control battery condition. Panasonic warns that mixing in other devices may cause heating, leakage, rupture, injury or device failure.
