Early childhood classes give them opportunities to explore objects, hear and try communication, move their bodies, notice other people, and practice emerging skills. These are opportunities—not guaranteed results or formal lessons every child will experience in the same way.
What babies and toddlers learn
Learning at this age spans several connected areas. A song with gestures, for example, can invite a child to listen, watch, move, imitate, and interact with an adult. Play is a central way young children explore and express ideas: NAEYC states, “Play is essential for all children, birth through age 8.”
Language and communication
Children hear and try communication during conversations, songs, stories, imitation, and back-and-forth exchanges. A baby may listen to a familiar voice or respond with sounds and expressions; a toddler may copy a word, gesture, or action. The CDC encourages singing and music with babies and reading with toddlers. A music or reading class is not required for typical language development.
Thinking and problem-solving
Babies explore people and objects by looking, reaching, and repeating actions. Toddlers increasingly imitate, follow simple directions, match and sort objects, engage in pretend play, and work through small problems. For children aged 1–2, the CDC suggests activities such as matching games, shape sorting, and simple puzzles. NYC Public Schools describes early childhood activities that can support problem-solving, imaginative thinking, early literacy, and early math concepts such as numbers, shapes, patterns, and sorting.

Movement and hands-on exploration
Reaching, rolling, crawling, walking, dancing, balancing, and handling materials all involve learning through movement. Children use their bodies to explore people and spaces and their hands to investigate objects. The CDC’s developmental milestones include how children move; ZERO TO THREE also discusses movement and motor development as part of early development.
Social and emotional skills
Shared play gives children a chance to notice others, express feelings, wait briefly, imitate, and begin taking turns. The CDC describes toddler examples such as pretend play, turn-taking, imitation, and expressing a range of emotions. These abilities develop gradually: toddlers do not need to share consistently or sit through group instruction for a class to be useful.

How learning looks at different ages
Children develop at different rates, and examples below are possibilities rather than class requirements or a diagnostic checklist.
Babies: birth to 12 months
- Listening to voices and songs and responding to face-to-face interaction.
- Watching, reaching, and exploring movement in a safe setting.
- Taking part in familiar, repeated routines and brief back-and-forth attention with an adult.
The CDC describes cognitive development in terms of memory, language, thinking, and reasoning, and encourages caregivers to sing and play music with babies. A baby who watches quietly during a group activity is participating, too.

- Trying matching activities, shape sorting, or simple puzzles.
The CDC notes that toddlers become more mobile and more aware of themselves and their surroundings during this period.
Toddlers: 2–3 years
- Trying pretend play, imitation, and brief turn-taking.
- Following simple instructions and sorting by features such as shape or color.
- Practicing movement such as kicking a ball and expressing feelings.

What happens during a class or program day
There is no single format. NYC Public Schools describes early childhood programs that may combine short whole-group and small-group activities, child-choice exploration, outdoor play, rest, and meals or snacks. A parent-child enrichment class may be shorter and focus on songs, movement, stories, sensory exploration, or free play; the provider sets the schedule.
NAEYC recommends following children’s interests and using adult involvement to extend activity without turning play into an entirely adult-directed task. This means an instructor might add a word, question, or new object to a child’s exploration rather than expecting every child to complete the same activity in the same way.

- LEARNING & SORTING TOY: This quick, tactile learning activity helps young learners master the 5 vowel sounds while strengthening phonemic awareness, phonics, and early word recognition. Kids sort picture pieces into cups labeled a, e, i, o, u based on the vowel sound they hear — ‘cap’ goes into a, ‘pin’ into i, and so on — making learning interactive, hands-on, and fun.
- INCLUDES: 100+ Picture Pieces, 5 Vowel Cups, and a Learning Guide.
- HOW TO PLAY: Set out the 5 vowel cups and say each vowel sound together. Let your child pick a picture piece, identify the picture, and listen for the vowel in the word. Then drop the piece into the correct matching cup. Continue sorting until every piece is placed in its vowel cup.
- MULTIPLE WAYS TO PLAY: Try a variety of engaging activities — sort one vowel at a time, discover more words with the same sound, do category-based sorting, or combine picture pieces to create short stories and boost language development.
- DEVELOPS KEY SKILLS: Strengthens fine motor skills, sharpens observation and mental processing, and boosts decision-making and critical thinking — all through exciting, hands-on play.
How to compare early childhood classes
Look for a fit with your child’s age, interests, access needs, and comfort in a group. You can ask a provider:
- What ages does the class serve, and how are activities adjusted for different developmental stages?
- Does a caregiver participate? What is the typical group size and adult attention?
- What is the mix of songs, movement, stories, sensory play, and open exploration?
- How long is a session, and what happens if a child needs a break?
- Are the location and activities accessible for your family?
- How do instructors respond to children’s cues and interests?
Developmentally responsive principles can help you assess a class, but the sources here do not rank commercial providers or establish that a particular branded class is superior.
Ways to extend exploration at home
Classes are one setting for learning, not a prerequisite. Shared reading with age-appropriate books and simple matching or sorting play are optional ways to explore together. For toddlers, the CDC suggests shape sorting and simple puzzles; these activities do not require special equipment or a formal lesson.
When to ask about development
A class cannot guarantee a milestone, and children may engage differently depending on age, temperament, culture, language, and development. If you have concerns about your child’s development, the CDC directs families to milestone resources and recommends discussing concerns with the child’s health care provider or early intervention services.
