Make the first class feel more familiar, not more demanding: tell your child what to expect, ask the instructor how the session works, and let your child warm up at their own pace. If you will leave, agree on a simple goodbye and settling-in plan first. Tears, clinginess, or watching from the sidelines at one session do not by themselves mean your child is not ready.
Why a first class can feel difficult
A new room, unfamiliar adults, other children, and a change in routine can all unsettle a baby or toddler. Separation anxiety and wariness of strangers are common from about 6 months to 3 years, though children vary and these feelings can also last longer or emerge during other stressful periods. These are developmental patterns, not a timetable or a diagnosis. UNICEF and the NHS describe why separation can be hard at this age.
A child may also feel unsure about the setting even when you stay. The first goal need not be joining every activity: becoming familiar with the room and people can be a useful start.
Before the class: make the plan familiar
Describe what will happen
Use short, concrete, upbeat language: “We’re going to a room where children sing and play. I’ll be with you,” or, if you are leaving, “We’ll play, and I’ll come back after snack.” Describe what may happen without promising that your child will like every moment or warning them that it will be difficult.

Preview the people or space if possible
Ask whether you can visit briefly, see a photo of the room, or hear a simple description of the routine. Familiarization through visits, photos, and discussion is recommended in England’s Department for Education guidance for starting reception; using those ideas for a community class is a reasonable adaptation, not a class-specific tested protocol. Read the England-specific transition guidance.
Practice short separations when you will be leaving
If your child will stay with the instructor while you go, try a brief separation with a trusted relative or friend beforehand, then build up gradually if that suits your child. UNICEF and the NHS recommend gradual practice for children struggling with separation. This step is not necessary for a caregiver-and-child class where you remain together.

Ask the instructor these questions
- Does the caregiver stay for the whole class, or leave at a particular point?
- Can a child watch before joining, and how do staff respond if a child cries or wants to stay close?
- Can we visit or arrive a little early to get familiar with the room?
- Are a small comfort toy or blanket allowed, and are there any safety or practical restrictions?
- What is the usual routine, and what should we bring?
There is no universal stay-or-leave rule for group classes; the provider sets the format and settling-in approach. Knowing the plan lets you prepare your child accurately.
Choose a time that suits basic needs
When possible, avoid arriving when your child is hungry, very tired, or unwell. The American Academy of Pediatrics notes that separation can be harder in those circumstances. HealthyChildren.org’s guidance also recommends an age-appropriate explanation of when you will return.

At arrival: let your child warm up
Give your child time to look around and stay close if that helps. They may watch, hold your hand, or play alongside other children before approaching the group. Offer an invitation—“Would you like to sit with me and watch?”—rather than insisting they join or greet everyone. UK early-years guidance recommends gentle reassurance, familiar play materials, and a phased approach when needed; Head Start notes that some children take longer to feel at ease with a new person. UK early-years guidance and Head Start’s guidance on separations and reunions support following the child’s cues.
A small familiar toy or blanket may help if the class permits it and it is safe and practical in that room. It is optional, not a requirement. UNICEF and the NHS describe familiar objects as a possible source of comfort during separation. A picture book about starting a new setting may also help some children imagine what to expect, but school-transition guidance does not establish that a book is necessary for a group class.

If you are leaving: keep goodbye warm and predictable
Use the plan you agreed with the instructor. Give a loving, matter-of-fact goodbye, say when you will return in terms your child understands, and then leave rather than repeatedly disappearing without telling them. “I’ll be back after snack” may be clearer to a toddler than a clock time. Keep the promise you make. The NHS and American Academy of Pediatrics recommend a confident, consistent goodbye and a clear return explanation.
Follow the class’s agreed approach if your child becomes upset; do not reappear after leaving in a way that restarts the goodbye unless the instructor’s plan calls for it. In a class where you stay, the transition may instead be moving from the entrance into the activity with you nearby.

If your child cries or hangs back
Crying at drop-off, clinging, or quietly observing can be part of adjusting to an unfamiliar situation. Respond calmly, offer reassurance, and let the instructor follow the settling-in plan. A single difficult session—or a child who does not join immediately—is not proof that the class has failed or that your child is not ready. Notice what seems to help and discuss adjustments with the instructor before the next visit.
When to ask for additional help
Talk with a health visitor or your child’s pediatrician if the distress is intense, your child remains very upset for a long time after you leave, or the problem continues for more than a few weeks. The NHS advises speaking with a health visitor in these situations, and the American Academy of Pediatrics recommends discussing a child who is not adapting with the pediatrician. Ordinary tears during a transition are common; persistent or severe distress deserves advice tailored to your child.
