Measurements are inputs to a particular chart—not a universal conversion to an XS, medium, or numeric size. Check whether the chart lists body measurements or garment measurements, and choose tops and pants independently when needed.
What you need before measuring
Use a flexible, soft measuring tape over the undergarments or light clothing you expect to wear beneath your scrubs. Keep the tape level and comfortably snug; do not pull it tight enough to compress your body. A second person can help keep it horizontal. Record each result with its unit, such as inches or centimeters.
For a precise hem length, measure in the footwear you expect to wear with the scrubs and follow the brand’s inseam instructions. Do not substitute height for inseam when the chart provides an inseam measurement.
How to take each measurement
Chest or bust
Wrap the tape around the fullest part of your chest or bust, keeping it level under your armpits and across your shoulder blades. Boston University’s scrub-sizing guide recommends using this measurement as the primary guide for choosing a scrub top.

Waist
Measure around your natural waistline, keeping the tape slightly loose. Chart instructions may define the waist location differently, so follow the placement given by the chart for the garment you are considering.
Hips
Stand with your feet together and measure around the fullest part of your hips and seat. Keep the tape level around your body.

Inseam
Measure along the inside of your leg, from just below the crotch toward the hem length you want. The Oregon Health & Science University (OHSU) guide describes measuring to about one inch below the ankle, but brands may define the target length differently. Use the chosen garment’s instructions when available.
How to use your measurements with a scrub size chart
- Find the chart for the exact brand and style. Scrub size labels and measurement ranges vary. For example, the University of Minnesota Bookstores publishes separate men’s and women’s charts with their own ranges. Do not assume that a size label in one brand matches the same label in another.
- Check what the chart measures. A body-measurement chart gives ranges for the person wearing the garment. A finished-garment measurement describes the item itself, including its cut and ease, and should not be compared directly with your body circumference without following the brand’s guidance. Careletics explicitly identifies its chart as body measurements, not garment measurements.
- Choose a top using its chart. Compare your chest or bust measurement with the top’s range. Boston University also advises people with a pear shape to account for hip measurements when choosing a top.
- Choose pants using their chart and length options. Compare waist and hip measurements with the pants chart, then use the inseam or length options separately. Waist and hip ranges determine the size choice; inseam helps determine the leg length.
- Use separate sizing if the brand offers it. Your best-fitting top and pant sizes may differ. If the brand sells separates or provides distinct top and bottom charts, use each garment’s measurements rather than forcing both into one size.
Compare length and fit options separately
Inseam options can be separate from waist and hip sizing. OHSU’s 2022 guide lists the following lengths; these are options in that guide, not a universal scrub standard.

When a brand provides the details, also compare garment length, rise, fit description (such as relaxed or modern), fabric stretch, and waistband adjustability. For example, Careletics gives separate top and bottom details and reports an unstretched waistband measurement for its pants. A garment measurement such as that waistband figure describes the item, not your body.

There is no universal between-size rule for scrubs. Use the exact brand’s size chart and any fit guidance for the style; do not carry a rule from another brand’s chart. If the top and pant charts point to different sizes, select them separately when the brand allows it.
