Do you need to play Final Fantasy games in order?

There are exceptions to the idea of a self-contained purchase: FINAL FANTASY XIV is an online MMORPG, and FINAL FANTASY VII REMAKE INTERGRADE is part of a multi-game reimagining. Check those structures before treating either as a conventional one-and-done story purchase.

Platform, edition, and format
Availability is title-specific and can change. Square Enix announced INTERGRADE for PS5 and later announced its expansion to Nintendo Switch 2 and Xbox Series X|S / Xbox on PC on January 22, 2026. That announcement does not replace a current store check: confirm the platform, edition, and included content on the store where you plan to buy.
For older games, FINAL FANTASY I–VI PIXEL REMASTER is a collection to consider if you want classic entries. Square Enix’s December 20, 2022 announcement described PS4 and Nintendo Switch releases, digital individual and bundle options, and a limited physical edition. It also listed quality-of-life upgrades. Treat that as release information, not a guarantee that a particular format is currently in stock in your region.

Is Final Fantasy VII Remake a good starting point?
It can suit someone who wants a modern action-RPG experience and is comfortable beginning a larger reimagining.
