“Router Man” most likely refers to a historical NetworkWorld feature about Bill Yeager, who is described as the creator of the multiprotocol router. It is a story about early networking—not a guide to choosing a router for your home. The identification is probable rather than certain because the original NetworkWorld feature is not available in the sources cited here.
Who was “Router Man”?
The name appears in the titles “An Interview With The Router Man” and “Router Man,” associated with Bill Yeager in a 2006 Slashdot item pointing to a NetworkWorld interview. The surviving reference makes Yeager the likely subject, but without the original feature, its complete contents and context cannot be confirmed. Slashdot’s 2006 interview item is a secondary reproduction, not the original NetworkWorld page.
What did Yeager say about the project?
In the statement reproduced by Slashdot, Yeager recalled that the project began in January 1980, after his boss asked him to connect the computer science department, medical center, and electrical engineering department. He said that six months later he had a working 3 Mbit router. Both dates and the speed are reported interview recollections; they are not independently verified project records.
What is a router?
A router forwards traffic between networks. For each packet, it uses network-layer information and routing tables to choose an outgoing interface and next hop. That distinction helps explain the historical significance of the account: the reported work was about connecting separate networks, not simply providing wireless access in a home.

These definitions come from RFC 1392, a networking glossary published in January 1993. It defines routing as selecting the correct interface and next hop for a packet being forwarded. Read RFC 1392.

What can—and cannot—be established
- The likely subject is Bill Yeager and an early multiprotocol router, based on the title match and Slashdot’s 2006 reference to the NetworkWorld interview.
- The January 1980 start and six-month development interval, along with the 3 Mbit figure, are attributed recollections in that secondary account.
- The original NetworkWorld feature is not available in the cited material, so further biographical details or technical specifications should not be inferred from the title alone.
- “Router Man” also appears in an unrelated book listing, leaving some uncertainty about the exact referent.
