Restart the Echo first: unplug it for 30 seconds, then reconnect it using its supplied power adapter. If it still will not connect, test another device on the same Wi-Fi to determine whether the problem is the speaker or the home network. Work through the checks below before resetting the Echo; reset steps differ by model.

1. Restart the Echo

Unplug the speaker, wait 30 seconds, and plug it back in. Allow it time to start up and reconnect. Amazon recommends this restart as an initial setup troubleshooting step: Amazon Echo setup troubleshooting.

2. Check whether the Wi-Fi works for other devices

Connect a phone or another device to the same Wi-Fi network. If that device also cannot get online, focus on the router or internet connection rather than the Echo. Restart the router, then restart the Echo. If several devices remain offline, check with your internet provider.

If other devices connect normally, continue with the Echo-specific checks below.

3. Check the Echo’s location and nearby interference

Move the Echo closer to the router and try connecting again. Amazon’s troubleshooting guidance recommends keeping the speaker within 30 feet (10 meters) of the router and away from electronic devices such as microwaves and baby monitors. This is a troubleshooting guideline, not a guarantee of reliable coverage in every home: Amazon Echo Wi-Fi troubleshooting.

4. Verify the password and saved Wi-Fi network

Check that you are using the correct Wi-Fi password. If you recently changed the router password or network, update the Echo’s saved connection in the Alexa app:

Echo devices with screens use separate instructions; consult Amazon’s guidance for the specific device. App wording can vary by model or region: Amazon Echo Wi-Fi troubleshooting.

5. Try the router’s other Wi-Fi band

If your router broadcasts separate 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz network names, try connecting the Echo to the other one. Amazon says Echo speakers connect to common home 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz Wi-Fi networks using 802.11a/b/g/n standards, but the available options depend on the Echo model and network compatibility. Changing bands is a reversible diagnostic, not a requirement for every speaker.

6. Temporarily reduce network load

Disconnect a few other Wi-Fi devices briefly, then see whether the Echo reconnects. Treat this as a test: if it helps, it may point to network congestion or coverage conditions, but it does not by itself show that the router needs replacing.

7. If setup is failing on a new Echo

Make sure the Alexa app is current, repeat the network checks, and restart the speaker. Amazon also suggests trying a phone hotspot during setup. If the Echo connects to the hotspot but not the home network, that points toward the home router or its settings; if multiple devices also fail on home Wi-Fi, investigate the network or contact your ISP.

8. Reset only after the other checks fail

Factory reset is a later step because it can erase personal settings and smart-home connections. Reset procedures vary by Echo model, so identify the exact model and follow its Amazon instructions rather than relying on generic button combinations. Amazon’s support guidance includes a generation-specific example, not a universal reset procedure: Amazon Echo reset instructions.
