A prediction market lets participants trade contracts tied to the outcome of a defined event. A contract’s price can be read as a rough market-implied probability, and its payout depends on the contract’s settlement rules—not on whether the market’s price proved to be a good forecast. In a common binary format, the winning side receives a fixed amount and the losing side receives nothing.

What is a prediction market?

A prediction market is a venue for trading contracts whose value depends on whether a specified event occurs. Contracts may ask a yes-or-no question, such as whether an economic measure will meet a threshold by a stated date. The contract’s wording determines what outcome counts; a short market title may not include every condition.

The Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) describes event contracts as contracts that derive value from an event outcome and are frequently structured as swaps. It also explains that market prices aggregate traders’ views. That makes a prediction market a source of information about participants’ beliefs, not an objective measure of an event’s true probability.

How do prediction markets work?

  1. A question is defined. The contract sets out the event, qualifying outcome, deadline, and other conditions.
  2. Participants trade contracts. Buyers and sellers take positions at available prices. Order books commonly display live bids and asks, which can change as orders and information change.
  3. The market resolves. The event is evaluated according to the contract’s settlement rules and specified evidence or decision process.
  4. The contract pays out. Depending on the result, the contract pays the amount stated in its terms. In a common binary example, one outcome pays a fixed amount and the other pays zero.

What does a 60-cent prediction market contract mean?

For a binary contract with a $1 winning payout, a price of $0.60 is often interpreted as an approximate 60% market-implied probability. It is a shorthand for the price in that contract format, not a guarantee that the event has a 60% objective chance of happening. The CFTC puts the distinction this way: “A contract’s price reflects traders’ perceived probability of the event outcome.”

Prices reflect the balance of buyers’ and sellers’ views and may move as new information arrives. A displayed price can differ from your own estimate, and the price alone does not establish how accurate or well-calibrated the market is.

How do prediction market payouts work?

CME Group describes its event contracts as priced from $0.01 to $0.99, with a $1 payout for the correct side and $0 for the incorrect side. Those are CME’s stated product mechanics, not universal terms for every prediction market. Its example below is an illustration, not a current market quote.

Illustrative position Settlement result Gross outcome before fees
Buy at $0.45 Predicted result happens; contract pays $1 $0.55 profit per contract: $1 payout minus $0.45 entry price
Buy at $0.45 Predicted result does not happen; contract pays $0 $0.45 loss per contract: the entry price is lost

Fees or other charges reduce a winning buyer’s net profit and can add to the cost of a losing position. The amount at risk and exact net outcome depend on the venue’s contract and fee terms; check those terms before trading.

Can you sell a prediction market contract before it resolves?

CME and the CFTC say participants can trade out of a position before the event is complete or the contract settles. If you close early, your result depends on the price you receive—not on the eventual settlement payout. The price may have risen or fallen since you entered, and fees or other costs may apply. Early trading is therefore an option to exit, not a guarantee of avoiding a loss.

Why do the contract wording and settlement rules matter?

Before trading, read beyond the headline question. Check the exact event definition, threshold, deadline, source of truth, who determines the outcome, the payout, and how delays or disputes are handled. The CFTC says customers should receive clear information about contract terms, fees, payout, and settlement. Do not assume a venue offers the same disclosures or protections unless its regulatory status and terms establish that.

A 2026 example shows why definitions matter: the Associated Press reported debate over whether Cardi B’s appearance during the Super Bowl halftime show qualified as a “performance” under a Kalshi market. Kalshi settled that market at last prices before trading was paused and returned money to users. This was a case-specific response, not a general rule for how prediction markets settle disputed contracts.

What regulation and risks should users understand?

Regulatory treatment depends on the contract, operator, and jurisdiction. In covered U.S. settings, CFTC-regulated markets are subject to registration and oversight requirements, but those requirements should not be assumed to apply to every platform or market. The CFTC’s 2026 advance notice of proposed rulemaking asks for public comment on how existing law and regulations should apply to event contracts; it is a request for comment, not a final new rule.

Market integrity is another consideration. In an advisory dated February 25, 2026, the CFTC described cases involving suspected misuse of nonpublic information and fraud related to event contracts traded on KalshiEX, a designated contract market. The agency said it has authority to police illegal trading practices on designated contract markets. The advisory concerns suspected conduct and potential violations; it does not mean ordinary informed trading is automatically misconduct.
