Choose a cable by the task and the exact Mac port—not by the USB-C plug’s shape. A USB-C cable may charge a Mac yet be too slow for fast storage or unable to carry video. For a display, dock, or high-speed drive, check that the cable, Mac, and connected device all support the required interface.

Start by identifying your Mac’s port

Check the exact Mac model before buying. Apple recommends finding the model in Apple menu  > About This Mac, then consulting its technical specifications. Port types and capabilities differ across Mac models and configurations, and a USB-C-shaped connector alone does not identify the supported functions. Apple’s Mac port guide can help identify the port; use the model-specific specifications to confirm what yours supports.

Apple says Macs with Thunderbolt 3, Thunderbolt/USB 4, Thunderbolt 4, or Thunderbolt 5 ports can use Thunderbolt 3 and USB-C cables. Macs with USB-C-only ports use USB-C cables. Check the port at the other end, too: the peripheral’s interface and requirements help determine which cable will work.

Choose for the job

What you’re connecting Good starting point Check before buying
Power for a Mac laptop A USB-C charging cable or a compatible Thunderbolt cable Whether the cable and power adapter provide the wattage your Mac needs. A charging cable may not support video or fast data.
Thunderbolt display or dock A Thunderbolt cable supported by both the Mac and the display or dock Supported Thunderbolt generation, display or dock requirements, cable length, and charging power if the dock will charge the Mac.
Fast external storage A Thunderbolt cable if both the Mac and drive support Thunderbolt; otherwise, a USB-C cable matching the drive’s interface The Mac and drive interfaces determine the actual transfer rate; a faster-rated cable cannot raise either device’s capabilities.
Ordinary USB-C device A USB-C cable suited to the device’s data and power needs Confirm data speed and any video requirement instead of assuming the connector guarantees them.

Charging, data, and video are different capabilities

A cable can support one function without supporting the others. Apple’s USB-C Charge Cable supports charging, but Apple lists its data-transfer speed as limited to 480 Mbps (USB 2.0) and says it does not support video. As Apple puts it: “The Apple USB-C Charge Cable also supports charging, but data-transfer speed is limited to 480Mbps (USB 2.0) and it doesn’t support video.” Apple’s cable guidance explains the distinction.

So, a USB-C charging cable may be entirely suitable if you only need power, but it is not the right choice for a monitor connection and may be slower than you want for large file transfers. For video through an adapter, Apple says USB-C or Thunderbolt display adapters must comply with DisplayPort Alt Mode, Thunderbolt 3, or Thunderbolt 4 requirements. Check the adapter’s supported video mode as well as the cable and Mac. Apple’s guide to connecting a display with an adapter covers these requirements.

Understand Thunderbolt cable ratings

Thunderbolt is a sensible choice for a compatible dock, display, or high-speed storage connection, but the cable’s maximum rating is not a guarantee of the speed or power delivered by the complete setup. The Mac, peripheral, charger, and cable must all support the relevant capability.

Apple cable Published capability How to interpret it
Thunderbolt 4 Pro Cable Up to 40 Gbps for Thunderbolt 4, Thunderbolt 3, and USB 4; up to 100 W charging These are Apple’s specifications for this cable, not a promise that every connected device will reach those rates or power levels.
Thunderbolt 5 Pro Cable Thunderbolt 5 data transfer up to 120 Gbps; Thunderbolt 4, Thunderbolt 3, and USB 4 data rates up to 80 Gbps; charging up to 240 W These are Apple’s supported cable capabilities. The Mac, peripheral, and power source still determine what the connection actually achieves.

The figures above are product specifications Apple published in 2024, not independent test results. When considering a third-party cable, check its manufacturer’s stated data, video, and power capabilities; do not assume it meets Apple’s specifications just because it has a USB-C connector.

Will a Thunderbolt 4 cable work with your Mac?

It can, if the Mac and connected device have compatible ports and the cable suits the task. Apple lists Thunderbolt 3, Thunderbolt/USB 4, Thunderbolt 4, and Thunderbolt 5 Mac ports as compatible with Thunderbolt 3 and USB-C cables. Confirm the exact model and peripheral requirements, particularly for video and charging. A Thunderbolt cable does not turn a USB-C-only device into a Thunderbolt device.

Use this quick buying checklist

  • Identify the exact Mac model and port in About This Mac and its technical specifications.
  • Decide whether you need charging, data, video, or a combination.
  • Check the connected device’s port and requirements, including supported Thunderbolt generation or USB interface.
  • For video, verify that the cable and any adapter support a suitable display mode.
  • For charging, check the required wattage and the power adapter; a cable’s maximum does not mean every setup will deliver it.
  • For third-party cables, verify the maker’s specifications for the function you need rather than relying on connector shape or product name.
